I've got a BFG GTX285 1021MB but I'm not sure if it's reference design or not, or what revision it is. Speccy (by Piriform) reports GPU=GT200; Device ID=10DE-05E3; Revision A2; 55nm. Is there anyway to tell without taking the aircooler off? Great Video by the way :)
nice video man,i like the way you explain ,buy the way ...i have the 9800 gx2 and last week i bought the cool-matic water black from innovatek...The question is!what if i use the arctic silver 5 to uply an the chips memories and not the thermalpads..if i will use thermal pads the Gpu will not conntact whith the water block..soo i used thermal grease---that was wrong¿??
@DeXgocom As my experience, I don't like to apply thermal grease on GPU or CPU that show die core (mean no metal cover but you can see a core block called "die") because i don't want grease to harmful CPU or GPU. I have heard that someone do apply CPU without metal cover then it broke down by short. I prefer to use thermal pad that don't have metal cover.
Just wondering though, with the thick and thin thermal pads, do some of them have paper that you peel off like a sticker? Or do you just put them on "as is"?
Actually, I think every thermal pad I've ever used has had plastic protective foil on both sides. So you need to remove that from both sides, before placing the pad.
- First sign: Make sure the card has the standard heatsink (the one with just one fan towards the back and a plastic cover), not some fancy special one.
- Ask your vendor (they probably don't know)
- Write to the customer support of the card manufacturer and ask (they often don't know either)
- Ask in a watercooling forum (that's your best bet)
Great video dude, but I was slightly confused on some parts.
I've never done this before, hence my looking for a video and stumbling onto this one.
How do the thermal pads work? Do they just "stick" to the chips you're putting them on or do you need to make them "stick" by putting thermal grease on before?
When you said to put the thick thermal pad on the part you highlighted blue, did you say two pieces? So I should cut two pieces of the thick pad and put two on each of the blue chips?
Yes, Gainward almost always have their own PCB design. EK Waterblocks sometimes make blocks especially for the Gainward cards, but these are obviously different from the "stadard" one I used in the video.
is it possible to also replace the front plate where the vga/ dvi cables are plugged in for example look at the bfg GTX 285 h2OC looks sick and takes up one slot leaving the other slots open but the price for it is just not worth it. Still is it possible from what I can see theres a small clear tube thing that holds the dual slot plate can it be removed?
Absolutely. You can get separate single-slot covers and switch them out. The clear plastic extension on the LED needs to be removed but that's easily done. I had some single-slot covers around at some point. If I find one that fits, I'll demo how to install it in my next video. :)
It will be similar, yes. The basic steps are the same, but you need to check the manual to see where to apply either thermal paste or pads. Just make sure you take your time and never force anything when removing the original heatsink or fastening the waterblock and it should be no problem. :)
Well done friend..I love how you say what needs to be done and then demo it (in time-lapse). It's perfect--we get to see without watching the screws in real time. If you keep these types of reviews/tutorials up I think you're going to be one of the tops on Utube!
Thanks, Pwnzistor. :) Some new tuts are coming up soon and I'm hoping I'll be able to provide more GPU waterblock installation guides as new cards and blocks come out.
looks like a cpu in the gpu lol? funny

This tutorial is simply "godlike", even a monkey can install that waterblock after watching this...

Hmm do u need to apply thermal grease to all those things also when u install an air cooler?
CheatEnginer 2 years ago
Depends on the cooler. Mostly, you'll have to either place thermal pads or apply thermal grease to all those areas, however.

Thanks dude.
The graphics card I plan to get looks exactly like yours, but it's by EVGA so it has a different design on the cover.
Also I was able to zoom in on the picture and in the front near the bottom it said revision 1.1
geramul 2 years ago
Also how can I tell what revision my card is?
geramul 2 years ago
Well, you can't really know for sure.
- First sign: Make sure the card has the standard heatsink (the one with just one fan towards the back and a plastic cover), not some fancy special one.

Yes, the pads stick there by themselves.
And you always have to put only one pad on any component. So, there are simply two pieces of the thick pad in total, not two on each component.

Good video. As a matter of constructive criticism, you don't say "aluminum" or "bowed" correctly. Otherwise your english is very very good.
snerjeck 2 years ago
Hey, thanks for your feedback! Someone already pointed out the "bowed" mistake to me (in a forum somewhere). ^^
Didn't know about the "aluminium" one, though. Guess I can't get them all right. ^^
DeXgocom 2 years ago
The way he says "aluminum" is the correct way in a large part of the world
