Superman would only do more harm than good here, as they had no way of discerning the amount of power the Alien Starfish...monster thingy could absorb. Can you imagine how royally screwed they would have been if the creature had absorbed all of Superman's powers? That is, unless we go by the JL cartoon, which had Amazo absorb both Superman's powers and his weakness to kyrptonite.
