I think your sandpaper is way too coarse, and I would use the carbide, wet/dry sandpapers from a good hardware store, not the lead sharpening stuff you're using....
the carbide papers are made to use with metal too. Try some 400, and then dubur with really fine sandpaper you can get at auto supply stores made for paint finishing, they are also carbide papers, like 1200 grit, 2000 grit...
@miatageekscott Not a stupid question... it forms an angle on the nib that's you're comfortable writing with. By making some letters on the sandpaper, you're creating an end that works for the way you hold it. I hope that makes sense ;)

Pardon the stupid question, but what does the sandpaper do for the nib?
