For this brief moment Joni could swing. And it was a pure and sweet moment in a pure and, maybe, not so sweet artist's varied career. "Court and Spark" is a great album and a perfect starting point to Joni's music. But I think her key moments of artistry are "For the Roses" and "Hejira". Go Joni!
she always puts me in a good mood. i've been listening to her for decades and i never tire of her work. i can say that about very few artists. but she still rises about them all for me.
@ShadyPastel no its Tom Scott and the band is The L.A. Express who back her on the Miles Of Aisles and Court & Spark albums. She had a relationship with the drummer John Guerin.
then she adds "we just got lost income devils bargain and we've got to get ourselves back to the garden." This song just evolved from her take on Miles of Aisles to Shadow and light. ANd her live version of "Black Crow"from that tour was
burning Lyle mayes did some wicked sax and pastorius' brought bass playing to a brought bass to a whole new level. I remember bass players listening to that album
yeah sirnose5826! she never sold her ass for sales. her female essence was so beyond what anyone else was putting out, it pisses me off when people mention Carol King or carly simon. SHe was way beyond. Her live "shadow and light"
version of "woodstock' is so beautiful. but now it's almost a lament for a time passed and the illusions that made everyone feel those days were never going
I always liked Joni Mitchell, and focused on Court and Spark nearly always. Such a mistake on my part. Her poetry on Blue, Ladies of the Canyon and Clouds is beautiful and inspiring. I've expanded my focus to look at her paintings. If that wasn't enough, I've now discovered all of these interviews of her on YouTube, and in the process discovered her to be a poet with insights beyond her lyrics. Well worth exploring her interviews on love, feminism, men, career, etc. Uncommonly insightful.
And that looks like Tom Scott up there, blowing the altissimo register of the tenor oh so sweetly, probably circa 1974 or 75 on tour with the LA Express Band. Schweeeeeet! : ) : ) : ) : )
Not only is she amazingly talented, but today, the "equivalent" (if there was one) would have fake blonde hair (as opposed to Joni's natural) and other cosmetic enhancements. Joni was the real deal, all around. Where is this whole package today? Nowhere.
dance with the lady with the hole in her stocking...This was standard '70's genius. Musicianship, writing and vocal talent. Today volume is considered talent. I consider myself blessed to have grown up on this. Great music just spilled out of the radio like water.
I've never been a fan of Court & Spark, the way I adore all Joni's other albums; it's too main stream for me...although there are some very nice songs on it, but Help Me is not it!
I love Joni..she had so much inside of her and made my life a beautiful world..i still relate to her conception of how life should really be,i know i am old fashioned but,However,i don't really care what you you think, her music is mine :)
This song Help Me is just AWESOME. It is just feel good music. Love it and it has influenced me to some degree. The background musicians on this song were awesome too. This is my favorite song by Joni. Wish there were artists like this now to listen to....but aspire to interesting and uplifting.
"If you go to my site VIRGO NOIR, you will hear some music that is reflective of my joy about living. Though there are very negative people out there who don't enjoy music and try to make musicians feel bad through either putting their looks down or their music, I am flying high on life. Dancing in the aisles of life
I love this song! Will someone please try to post to original version with the steel string guitar? Because, the steel string guitar is what really gives this song an exquisite sound.
Today, there is still an occassional gem on this level that slips through. It just doesn't get noticed, promoted or hyped like the garbage. A great example of this would be Esperanza Spalding. She won the Grammy over Justin Bieber. Goes to show you that there is still a glimmer of justice and good taste.
They played this song so much on the radio in 1974 that i started to like it.Her cord at 0:52 and 2:16 is what caught my attention. I like how she adds extra words to the measure at 1:41. I never new the words to the song until i looked them up on the internet. To chill out with a woman with holes in her stockings and her not mind, sounds like a fun woman to be with!
@primogennaio Really? I thought the opposite. This is fabulous. I feel that it completely outdoes the studio version in warmth and style. This is a tight performance, man.
@humbleradio I said so because it lacks some of the chords and instrumentals of the studio version. Maybe it's just what I'm used to. It's a great tune, but sometimes the two versions can't possibly be the same. Didn't say I dislike it, just that I feel the studio version is better.
I agree. I don't think that's Larry Carlton on guitar, though it's definitely Tom Scott on sax. LA Express, right? Perhaps LC's absence is why this arrangement is less sophisticated than the studio one, which I feel is hands-down superior. Joni's in fine voice, however, and I predict I'll watch it hundreds of times.
@DrVivianBell The studio version is incomparable and perfect. The instrumentals and chords of that version, not in the live version, make all the difference.
I'm agreeing with you. I'm speculating that this live performance is not as sophisticated as the studio version because Larry Carlton is NOT on guitar in the live version. Put another way, LC was brilliant on Court and Spark.
@DrVivianBell Court and Spark was a brilliant masterpiece. I play it very often. It makes me think of where I was working, friends I had, family events and my life in 1974. In sound, beat, and genre it differed a great deal from other songs popular at the time. It's greatness has not faded. Having withstood the test of time, it's a legacy to its outstanding quality. Not only does it evoke memories for me, sure beats the crap that passes for music today. Most - not all - of it sucks.
Another great artist from Canada - I think that this song is one of those great 70's recordings that music lovers of all genres will always remember & be happy & probably moved to hear again. ( I am a jazz devotee myself but I do love the 70's quality stuff ) Posting it will give youngsters a chance to get to know & love a classic.
@MrWoodnail I saw her play with Tom Scott and the LA Express at Wembley Stadium in London, England the same year this clip was recorded - it was awesome.
Someone oughta make a campaign against fogey comments placing old artists ahead of more recent artists. Sounds like old ears to me or simple ears or I have this album at home my mum left around. I can enjoy recent artists just the same as music that my grandfather listened to when he was running around in short pants, why the hang can`t you. You don`t need to play Beyonce and Gaga and Winehouse on your wedding night. Just know what to listen for.
@1jetdrvr You're correct. Us "fogies" enjoyed these songs when they played on Top 40 AM radio. The best songs from the mid '60s-mid '70s were incredibly well-written and exquisitely recorded. They're were great then and great today. I highly doubt that any of today's Top 40 are strong enough to be listened to in 40 years. They're too musically "provincial," not as well-written. But they have a lot of attitude and beat, which is why the undiscerning ears of today's youth "groove" to it.
I saw her and Tom Scott on this tour. I'm thinking it was 1974 in Austin, TX. Bob Dylan who was doing a show in Houston surprisingly appeared on stage after the concert was over and sang a few songs with her! The best concert I've ever been to by far!
Love Joni..preferred it when her voice wasn't either too "wobbly" (slightly on this performance).. or "wispy"...(the early albums), but Court and Spark has to be one of the top pop albums of all time.
I wish the comments stuck to appreciation of the artist rather than comparing and demeaning others. Joni is brilliant, and so are many others, in their own fashion.
Everyone please watch this ----> its one of my close friends doing a cover to this song and i truley think shes amazing hopefully you will to just go to my page and its right there ! let her know what you think PLEASE :D
One and only, Many have been influenced but haven't catched her up. BTW I'm the one crying over poor music nowadays. All that I have to do with "oldies but goodies" like her masterpieces is introducing them to the young by using, say, Facebook.
From experiences, being from a non-conventional, and a jazz baby I have to speak up for Katy and GaGa...
This is the stuff they listened to growing up! Stop being judgemental! Please I had to say something. I know I'm gonna get an earful from some of the purists of music but coming from an actual child of a musician and a one who goes by the doctrine of Beyonce I had to say something.
Biased ass people. There is NOTHING wrong with rap. Yes music isnt what it once was but Lady Gaga and Beyonce are very talented. No they dont move me as much as Joni or alot of old school artists but still. Be open minded towards music. Each genre has its own trash. Rap as a whole is not responsible.
@lind3420 I dunno! It's like the album filler of yesterday is the dressed-up hit of today. Where are the new songs as good as Chicago's "Beginnings," or the Guess Who's "These Eyes"? We'd know if we heard it. Today's female artists sound pleasant-- except their stuff is way, way below "Help Me," or "Poetry Man," or "Midnight at the Oasis," or "Killing Me Softly."" It's like songwriters are no longer capable of nailing the big ones. It must be a collective muse thing.
As much as I love Joni Mitchell, it irritates me that some some think that Lady GaGa is not capable writing good music. Please look up her interviews and other stuff. Then you'll understand.
Why do people say music today sucks? That no one like Joni exists in 'todays music'. Just because you dont see it in the top 40, doesnt mean good music isnt being made. Its just harder to find because there is so much music around today. So instead of complaining about the top 40 artists, just look for the good stuff. It exists.
if U live in a communist or socialist country - I really do feel sorry for U - if not dont ask for any handouts - unless U are truly unable to work. If U are then I dont have a problem with my tax $ going to help U. This country did not achieve greatness by socialism - nor has any other by paying the lazy to stay that way thru more socialism
If Gaga, Winehouse, Swift, Beyonce or any female artist today could write, sing and play a song as good as this...I'd pay attention. But we all know they won't, because they seem utterly incapable of it. They are nowhere near as musically talented as Joni. They can't come up with "the hook." In fact, there hasn't been a single new song released in the past 25 years as good as this. I know I'm choir-preaching here, but like I always say--if I'm wrong, please play me one...
@sund7cuU I'll definitely check out Sarah Jarosz. It might seems like some of us are stuck in the past, esp. because of nostalgia. But I'm really waiting for a new musical revolution. It would be great to hear terrific new songs every month, like in the '60s and '70s. Artistic attitudes and trends change, but people don't. I'm sure there are great new melodic, rhythmic, and lyrical combinations waiting to be discovered.
I wasn't disagreeing with you really, just trying to cheer you up a bit. Sounded like you were having a bad day. (ha ha) There's nothing wrong with nostalgia as long as we don't forget that the same decade that gave us Joni also gave us Suzi Quatro and Leif Garrett, if you get my drift. I'd say the difference between the 70s and now is that at least Joni got on the radio. I'm afraid Ms Jarosz and others like her are doomed to be cult favorites at best.
@sund7cuU I hear you. Yeah, Suzi Quatro (aka Leather Tuscadero), Leif, Shawn Cassidy, the Bay City Rollers, Rex Smith--we had our Bieberisms back then. But at least it took a backseat to a lot of better stuff at the time. But anyway, thanks for turning me on to Sarah Jarosz. Listening to her original stuff, she's extremely talented. And only 20! You're right, there's hope.
@takfam07 You're really looking in the wrong sphere here. Joanna Newsom is the most possible candidate: her lyricism is wonderful, and she actually has some nice hooks, like in '81 and anything from The Milk Eyed Mender. St. Vincent comes up close behind, similarly skilled at guitar and singing and with good lyrics. However, I can't think of any young artist that has tackled the range of issues with such perfect lyricism as Joni, not any of which that has radio presence.
@magus3498 Damn, you are right on all counts. Just listened to a few clips...Joanna Newsom really has something unique, melodic, intriguing and lyrical to offer. Simply love her harp playing. Newsom's vocal approach takes some getting used to, but it does grow on you. (They said that about some guy named Zimmerman, too). Truly, I'll check out more of her stuff. So glad brilliant young artists are still out there with the right stuff. Thanks!
@takfam07 I loooove Joni Mitchell, and she is utterly INCOMPARABLE!!. . . .but Winehouse has good work, and I will say, I don't think Winehouse belongs in that list of inadequate talents. . .Despite her drug problems, I think she's one of the only girls out today who the older generations who could look at and say "okay, finally someone who has respect for us, and is trying to carry on the tradition of good music". . . .but that's just my opinion
@takfam07 Amen!!!!! This is staggering genius before our very eyes and ears- ethereal, very sophisticated music. So pretty--Not too jazzy, not too poppy...just right!
@takfam07 honestly, you don't listen to enough music. This isn't the best song in existence - and you'd have to be fairly ignorant to say that. Yes, I'm a massive fan.
@Uktrayf I didn't say it was the best song in existence. I said there hasn't been a NEW song released in the last 25 years as good as this one. If I'm wrong, and there's been a better original song released since May 1986, tell me what it is. I'm surprised it escaped my attention (but like you say, I must be ignorant and don't listen to enough music). So let's hear it. What's the artist and title?
@Uktrayf Cool, thanks for the suggestions. I'm always looking for current artists with talent. Doesn't really matter if they're as good as Joni's best-- if they're good, they're good. And probably underexposed, with all the Top 20 crap today. Will check 'em out.
@takfam07 you're absolutely right about mainstream music. i encourage you to look beyond whats "popular" though. joni is the best. but there are some really talented new young women that are much closer to her than others. look up laura marling, and listen to her lyrics. for her age, shes really got it.
@takfam07 I don't understand why people are so narrow minded when it comes to music. Every person is different and has their own taste and preference in music! You saying there hasn't been a single song as good as this in the past 25 years is your opinion. There's no point in me naming a song or two that have been released since they will be my own taste in music! People always put gaga & etc down, why can't they just accept that not everyone will have the same taste in music as they do. jeeeez.
@EagleDestiny Sure, anything goes. It's all subjective opinion, right? "No disputing taste." But we're still comparing apples to apples: 3-minute, commercial pop for the English-speaking market. And like any art form, there are peaks and valleys. To my ears, the best of today's music falls short. Songs aren't as well-written as in the '60s and '70s. The emphasis now is on visuals, attitude, and beats. But the actual tunes are rather nondescript, like dressed-up B-sides or album-filler.
@takfam07 what you say is stupid as there is room for all types of acts and styles and not everyone likes the same type of music. You also exaggerate dramatically saying "utterly incapable of it" ; that is glib & over generalised. I'm a fan of Joni Mitchell & have eight of her albums
@TheKenfig I like all kinds of music, too. But we're talking here about commercially recorded Western pop music from the 20th century on. I'm not comparing "Help Me" to Bulgarian pipes or Maasai war songs (which are unearthly, and which I love). The current artists are playing the same game as Joni, and subject to comparison. Are their songs as good as Help Me, or Big Yellow Taxi, or Both Sides Now? Those are phenomenal songs that will always be great. Can current artists say the same?
@takfam07 Doesn't really matter does it ? Youre overreacting ; there have always been better song writers than others and even 'better' is subjective as it all depends on what one likes listening to. I have what I consider the 'best' albums, the most influential albums, the more obscure and not very commercial albums that are just personal favourites I like listening to that not many would like. They could not ALL be in my top 10 'best' albums. People like what you think is crap ; who cares ?
@TheKenfig I care and so do others. The quality of popular music reflects our culture and spirit. When "Help Me" got onto the Billboard 100 Top Ten (first week in June, 1974), here are some other songs on that same list: Band On the Run; You Make Me Feel Brand New; The Entertainer; Midnight At the Oasis; Sundown; Oh Very Young. Now check out the artists on this week's Top Ten: Adele, Katy Perry/Kanye West; Black Eyed Peas; Britney Spears; Pitbull; J. Lo; Lady Antebellum; and Rihanna.
@TheKenfig so my point is that pop music (Billboard Top 100 as a standard) has morphed into something that is not song-oriented like before. The songs are to support visuals, they aren't as melodically strong. The test is whether a song becomes a classic. You wouldn't recognize Chicago, the Classics IV, or the Guess Who if you met them on your street during their heydey. But they all wrote and recorded all-time classics. How will Beyonce's or Katy Perry's hits today fare 30 years from now?
@takfam07 Doesn't matter though one bit does it ? You take it was too seriously. Beyonce's stuff people love for its own reasons, to enjoy at discos , parties etc AND it is immensely popular. Millions of her fans dont want to hear Joni Mitchell so Beyonce is hugely popular with millions and her fans dont care who has the 'best' songs
@TheKenfig Yeah, it's not life-or-death, but life's better with a good soundtrack. It sure is irritating to hear Beyonce and her ilk on the airwaves constantly, esp. when I'm not in a 24/7 party mood (which is kind of an idiotic state to be in). But thank god the '60s and '70s did happen, recording technology existed, and those old "great" songs are now digitized and more widely circulated than ever. And I do understand that changing demographics=changing tastes. But not always for better.
@takfam07 Still, each to their own eh ? and there's plenty of music and variety of music to go around for everyone in plenty of locations ; millions dont agree with what you say and millions do and millions partly do but dont get so irritated by it ; there's worse things aplenty happening
@TheKenfig Yep, to each his own. As H.L. Mencken said, "no one ever went broke underestimating the intelligence of the American public." The Beatles & Dylan launched a 12-year era in which the best music was also the most popular music. More often the right artists were admired and respected. Today, with Gaga, Kanye, etc., a very different zeitgeist exists. Madonna launched an era and said it best: "strike a pose, there's nothing to it." Indeed--apart from "style" --there is nothing there.
@takfam07 As far as I'm concerned none of the best music of which there's more than enough for me, is still there to listen and it's not going anywhere, so I'm not complaining ; I have more than 400 albums from early 60s till the present and there's still lots of new music I enjoy so if I dont particularly like something, I can still respect most I wouldnt listen to and so dont give a shit ; I've got so much stuff, older stuff cant be made TWICE can it ? (& I dont mean 'covers' )
@TheKenfig I hear you, and you probably have a healthier perspective on it. I have hundred of albums as well. Classical, Jazz, R&B, Funk, Hip-Hop, Disco, Country & Western, Broadway, Celtic, Swing, "Crooners" (Sinatra, Como, Julie London, etc.), Broadway Musicals, Brazilian, Latino, Indian Raga. LOTS of old Blues. So my comparison basis has been formed after 35 years of close listening. But you're right-- the classic old stuff can't be made twice. Good insight--I know what you're saying.
@takfam07 But I mean it's still there for us whenever we want to listen again so we've got enough good to choose from in our collections but whenever I'm inclined to think a bit like you, I then hear some new stuff on the radio and it's still good e.g. Fleet Foxes etc but I dont mind GaGa etc, it doesn't piss me off
@TheKenfig I don't know why Gaga, Lil Wayne, etc. irritate me so, but they do. I think it's because the airwaves used to be filled with lots of great new songs, so you could marginalize the crap. Today it's virtually all crap with nothing good to offset it, hence my irritation. Maybe there's some good new stuff today But no one's come up with the quality of "Poetry Man" or "Summer Breeze" in a long, long time. From about 1985-90, I saw it wane off. Not coincidentally, with the rise of Rap.
@takfam07 You do have a point...but then again, times have changed...it's harder to become well known these days just by being good.... also...expecting artists to match Joni is just silly...her stuff is uniquely beautiful...her style sets a standard that's hard to beat no matter how good you are.
@Lastman0nEarth You're right of course. Times have changed, different demographics, digital media, cell phones, video games, instant info, freer society, news 24/7, global markets. I think all this is great, but prevents the standard of music I want to hear from from being written and produced anymore. Even country-tinged music. I'm thinking, "none of this is nearly as distinctive as 'Danny's Song' or 'Aimee' or 'Mr. Bojangles,' yet they're still winning Grammys!" Yep, jus' gettin' old!
@takfam07 I find it helps to broaden your musical tastes...I'm young, still have lots to explore, but my collection spans around 600 years and there's good stuff from all times :P Whether it's classical or funk or country or metal, there are always awesome artists here and there...just can't expect them to be the most popular, the most renowned, the most awarded...cause popular artists are quite often manufactured to make money, set trends, influence buyers...music is a powerful tool.
@Lastman0nEarth Over the years I've amassed a sizable collection of music from different cultures and eras. But as for Top 40 music., to my ears, it sounds like songwriting quality diminished thru the '80s, music became more visual and dance-oriented rather than listening-oriented. It sounds more juvenile across the board. "Help Me" appeals to kids, but it's not kid music per se. Today's stuff sounds shallow in terms of melody and lyric content. You're right about "manufactured" influence.
@takfam07 I'm curious...Bjork, Mars Volta, Marilyn Manson, Jamiroquai, X-Japan, Muse, Opeth, Nomeansno, System of a Down, John Hiatt, Neil Young, Simply Red, Peter Gabriel, Rush, Popa Chubby, Dream Theater, Tom Petty, Joan Osborne, Hanson Brothers, Blue Rodeo...I could go on for a while.... All great talents, all current and in my opinion, on par with Joni in terms of positive impact on music, barring in some cases long-running popularity. What is your reaction to these choices?
@Lastman0nEarth Of course I'm a lifelong Neil Young fan, grew up with After the Gold Rush and Harvest as a young kid. He's as big, probably bigger than Joni. Tom Petty is OK, I like "Here Comes My Girl," but to me he's mid-level at best (but a cool guy). I like two or three Peter Gabriel tunes, but a little too angular, synthesizer-y for me. For Rush, a couple of great songs (Tom Sawyer kicks ass), but a little Rush goes a long way. I'll have to check out the others--thanks for the leads.
@takfam07 Okay, interesting. I'd say check out John Hiatt at least...I really meant I could go on for quite a while naming more so I probably enjoy a lot of stuff you'd dislike. Another neat one is Leonard Dembo.
@Lastman0nEarth Will listen. I'm open to all kinds of music. My only lament is that Top 40 is what we all share, but no longer what it used to be--strong, clear-cut classics like "She's Not There" (1964); "Downtown" (1965); "Respect" (1967); " "Stormy" (1968); "Proud Mary" (1969); "Fire and Rain" (1970); "Ain't No Sunshine" (1971); "Ventura Highway" (1972); "Summer Breeze" (1973); "Midnight at the Oasis" (1974); "For the Love of You" (1975). Rihanna, Gaga and Pitbull are just not the same.
@takfam07 Well, this is problem of sampling... For every Joni, there were hundreds (if not more) of bad songwriters back then too... How about listening to Jeff Buckley's "Lover you should have come over" for something breathtaking released more recently? (But I do LOVE Joni's stuff)
@nsn1978 Thanks, you're right Buckley is great. Good genes, too (Tim Buckley). It's too bad Jeff left us so soon. And you're right, there's tons of stuff out there, but hard to sort through to find the gems! You could more-or-less count on the hit charts years ago, because label owners like Ahmet Ertegun had ears and appreciated the good stuff. There was lots of junk on the air back then, but also lots of epic stuff because the muse was there. Sure enough, those are the classics today.

Go Joni!

who were not about Joni as much pastorius but they all developed an appreciation for her. her reworking of Corinthians Love is bother example of who
she could channel something and enhance it and put it to a beautiful melody.
so many great songs. Help me was always a vocal challenge. in 83 she did it but
it was coming as easy as it use to. still great but you could hear the strain.

of mythologizing a concert that was overyhyped and maybe the mark of the end.
Her chords, her singing the song looking back saved it from an unjustly novelty

I always liked Joni Mitchell, and focused on Court and Spark nearly always. Such a mistake on my part. Her poetry on Blue, Ladies of the Canyon and Clouds is beautiful and inspiring. I've expanded my focus to look at her paintings. If that wasn't enough, I've now discovered all of these interviews of her on YouTube, and in the process discovered her to be a poet with insights beyond her lyrics. Well worth exploring her interviews on love, feminism, men, career, etc. Uncommonly insightful.

Not only is she amazingly talented, but today, the "equivalent" (if there was one) would have fake blonde hair (as opposed to Joni's natural) and other cosmetic enhancements. Joni was the real deal, all around. Where is this whole package today? Nowhere.

When are where was this filmed? A great 70s tune, but it lacks the polished quality of the studio version, IMHO.
primogennaio 6 months ago
@primogennaio Really? I thought the opposite. This is fabulous. I feel that it completely outdoes the studio version in warmth and style. This is a tight performance, man.
humbleradio 6 months ago
@humbleradio I said so because it lacks some of the chords and instrumentals of the studio version. Maybe it's just what I'm used to. It's a great tune, but sometimes the two versions can't possibly be the same. Didn't say I dislike it, just that I feel the studio version is better.
primogennaio 6 months ago
@primogennaio
DrVivianBell 6 months ago
@DrVivianBell The studio version is incomparable and perfect. The instrumentals and chords of that version, not in the live version, make all the difference.
primogennaio 6 months ago
@primogennaio
I'm agreeing with you. I'm speculating that this live performance is not as sophisticated as the studio version because Larry Carlton is NOT on guitar in the live version. Put another way, LC was brilliant on Court and Spark.
DrVivianBell 6 months ago
@DrVivianBell Court and Spark was a brilliant masterpiece. I play it very often. It makes me think of where I was working, friends I had, family events and my life in 1974. In sound, beat, and genre it differed a great deal from other songs popular at the time. It's greatness has not faded. Having withstood the test of time, it's a legacy to its outstanding quality. Not only does it evoke memories for me, sure beats the crap that passes for music today. Most - not all - of it sucks.

1jetdrvr 7 months ago 4
@1jetdrvr You're correct. Us "fogies" enjoyed these songs when they played on Top 40 AM radio. The best songs from the mid '60s-mid '70s were incredibly well-written and exquisitely recorded. They're were great then and great today. I highly doubt that any of today's Top 40 are strong enough to be listened to in 40 years. They're too musically "provincial," not as well-written. But they have a lot of attitude and beat, which is why the undiscerning ears of today's youth "groove" to it.

Why do people say music today sucks? That no one like Joni exists in 'todays music'. Just because you dont see it in the top 40, doesnt mean good music isnt being made. Its just harder to find because there is so much music around today. So instead of complaining about the top 40 artists, just look for the good stuff. It exists.

If Gaga, Winehouse, Swift, Beyonce or any female artist today could write, sing and play a song as good as this...I'd pay attention. But we all know they won't, because they seem utterly incapable of it. They are nowhere near as musically talented as Joni. They can't come up with "the hook." Search for Sarah Jarosz "My Muse".
Not saying she's the next Joni or anything, but she's pretty damn good and only 19 or so as of Apr 2011. Just sayin' it's not all bleak out there.
sund7cuU 9 months ago
@sund7cuU I'll definitely check out Sarah Jarosz. It might seems like some of us are stuck in the past, esp. because of nostalgia. But I'm really waiting for a new musical revolution. It would be great to hear terrific new songs every month, like in the '60s and '70s. Artistic attitudes and trends change, but people don't. I'm sure there are great new melodic, rhythmic, and lyrical combinations waiting to be discovered.
takfam07 9 months ago
@takfam07
I'm afraid Ms Jarosz and others like her are doomed to be cult favorites at best.
sund7cuU 9 months ago
@sund7cuU I hear you. Yeah, Suzi Quatro (aka Leather Tuscadero), Leif, Shawn Cassidy, the Bay City Rollers, Rex Smith--we had our Bieberisms back then. But at least it took a backseat to a lot of better stuff at the time. But anyway, thanks for turning me on to Sarah Jarosz. Listening to her original stuff, she's extremely talented. And only 20! You're right, there's hope.
takfam07 9 months ago
@takfam07 You're really looking in the wrong sphere here. Joanna Newsom is the most possible candidate: her lyricism is wonderful, and she actually has some nice hooks, like in '81 and anything from The Milk Eyed Mender. St. Vincent comes up close behind, similarly skilled at guitar and singing and with good lyrics. However, I can't think of any young artist that has tackled the range of issues with such perfect lyricism as Joni, not any of which that has radio presence.
magus3498 9 months ago
@magus3498 Damn, you are right on all counts. Just listened to a few clips...Joanna Newsom really has something unique, melodic, intriguing and lyrical to offer. Simply love her harp playing. Newsom's vocal approach takes some getting used to, but it does grow on you. (They said that about some guy named Zimmerman, too). Truly, I'll check out more of her stuff. So glad brilliant young artists are still out there with the right stuff. Thanks!

takfam07 8 months ago
@takfam07 I don't understand why people are so narrow minded when it comes to music. Every person is different and has their own taste and preference in music! You saying there hasn't been a single song as good as this in the past 25 years is your opinion. There's no point in me naming a song or two that have been released since they will be my own taste in music! People always put gaga & etc down, why can't they just accept that not everyone will have the same taste in music as they do. jeeeez.
EagleDestiny 8 months ago 3
@EagleDestiny very true
TheKenfig 8 months ago
@EagleDestiny Sure, anything goes. It's all subjective opinion, right? "No disputing taste." But we're still comparing apples to apples: 3-minute, commercial pop for the English-speaking market. And like any art form, there are peaks and valleys. To my ears, the best of today's music falls short. Songs aren't as well-written as in the '60s and '70s. The emphasis now is on visuals, attitude, and beats. But the actual tunes are rather nondescript, like dressed-up B-sides or album-filler.
takfam07 8 months ago
@takfam07 what you say is stupid as there is room for all types of acts and styles and not everyone likes the same type of music. You also exaggerate dramatically saying "utterly incapable of it" ; that is glib & over generalised. I'm a fan of Joni Mitchell & have eight of her albums
TheKenfig 8 months ago
@TheKenfig I like all kinds of music, too. But we're talking here about commercially recorded Western pop music from the 20th century on. I'm not comparing "Help Me" to Bulgarian pipes or Maasai war songs (which are unearthly, and which I love). The current artists are playing the same game as Joni, and subject to comparison. Are their songs as good as Help Me, or Big Yellow Taxi, or Both Sides Now? Those are phenomenal songs that will always be great. Can current artists say the same?
takfam07 8 months ago
@takfam07 Doesn't really matter does it ? Youre overreacting ; there have always been better song writers than others and even 'better' is subjective as it all depends on what one likes listening to. I have what I consider the 'best' albums, the most influential albums, the more obscure and not very commercial albums that are just personal favourites I like listening to that not many would like. They could not ALL be in my top 10 'best' albums. People like what you think is crap ; who cares ?
TheKenfig 8 months ago
@TheKenfig I care and so do others. The quality of popular music reflects our culture and spirit. When "Help Me" got onto the Billboard 100 Top Ten (first week in June, 1974), here are some other songs on that same list: Band On the Run; You Make Me Feel Brand New; The Entertainer; Midnight At the Oasis; Sundown; Oh Very Young. Now check out the artists on this week's Top Ten: Adele, Katy Perry/Kanye West; Black Eyed Peas; Britney Spears; Pitbull; J. Lo; Lady Antebellum; and Rihanna.
takfam07 8 months ago
@TheKenfig so my point is that pop music (Billboard Top 100 as a standard) has morphed into something that is not song-oriented like before. The songs are to support visuals, they aren't as melodically strong. The test is whether a song becomes a classic. You wouldn't recognize Chicago, the Classics IV, or the Guess Who if you met them on your street during their heydey. But they all wrote and recorded all-time classics. How will Beyonce's or Katy Perry's hits today fare 30 years from now?
takfam07 8 months ago
@takfam07 Doesn't matter though one bit does it ? You take it was too seriously. Beyonce's stuff people love for its own reasons, to enjoy at discos , parties etc AND it is immensely popular. Millions of her fans dont want to hear Joni Mitchell so Beyonce is hugely popular with millions and her fans dont care who has the 'best' songs
TheKenfig 8 months ago
@TheKenfig Yeah, it's not life-or-death, but life's better with a good soundtrack. It sure is irritating to hear Beyonce and her ilk on the airwaves constantly, esp. when I'm not in a 24/7 party mood (which is kind of an idiotic state to be in). But thank god the '60s and '70s did happen, recording technology existed, and those old "great" songs are now digitized and more widely circulated than ever. And I do understand that changing demographics=changing tastes. But not always for better.
takfam07 8 months ago
@takfam07 Still, each to their own eh ? and there's plenty of music and variety of music to go around for everyone in plenty of locations ; millions dont agree with what you say and millions do and millions partly do but dont get so irritated by it ; there's worse things aplenty happening
TheKenfig 8 months ago
@TheKenfig Yep, to each his own. As H.L. Mencken said, "no one ever went broke underestimating the intelligence of the American public." The Beatles & Dylan launched a 12-year era in which the best music was also the most popular music. More often the right artists were admired and respected. Today, with Gaga, Kanye, etc., a very different zeitgeist exists. Madonna launched an era and said it best: "strike a pose, there's nothing to it." Indeed--apart from "style" --there is nothing there.
takfam07 8 months ago
@takfam07 As far as I'm concerned none of the best music of which there's more than enough for me, is still there to listen and it's not going anywhere, so I'm not complaining ; I have more than 400 albums from early 60s till the present and there's still lots of new music I enjoy so if I dont particularly like something, I can still respect most I wouldnt listen to and so dont give a shit ; I've got so much stuff, older stuff cant be made TWICE can it ? (& I dont mean 'covers' )
TheKenfig 8 months ago
@TheKenfig I hear you, and you probably have a healthier perspective on it. I have hundred of albums as well. Classical, Jazz, R&B, Funk, Hip-Hop, Disco, Country & Western, Broadway, Celtic, Swing, "Crooners" (Sinatra, Como, Julie London, etc.), Broadway Musicals, Brazilian, Latino, Indian Raga. LOTS of old Blues. So my comparison basis has been formed after 35 years of close listening. But you're right-- the classic old stuff can't be made twice. Good insight--I know what you're saying.
takfam07 8 months ago
@takfam07 But I mean it's still there for us whenever we want to listen again so we've got enough good to choose from in our collections but whenever I'm inclined to think a bit like you, I then hear some new stuff on the radio and it's still good e.g. Fleet Foxes etc but I dont mind GaGa etc, it doesn't piss me off
TheKenfig 8 months ago

@Lastman0nEarth yes i can't think of anyone that can match her
