A huge bus pulled up and only five guys got out. A few days later all of the equipment packed into that bus was in my basement and half of it was musical instruments I'd never seen before: huge gongs, saxophones of all sizes from 7' tall down to the smallest, every percussion instrument that would fit. I thought many were novelties until I witnessed them used in practice for 8 hours a day 7 days a week for a month in preparation for a US tour. True masters practice every day and they show it.
I don't understand why guys like Albert Ayler, as amazing as he is, seem to get so much more recognition. These guys are waaay more accessible. This is ridiculously funky.
Brings back so many great memories... they used to play Boston a couple of times a year back in the 80's.. well at least it seemed like it at the time.
pu.. para..pu para.. parararara. uu.. parara. uu.. miss Lester with them.. loved him & all of them so much. Fomoudu Don Moye..no one drummer plays like him. ciao all from me :-)
these right here are the greatest musicians of all time. I had the privelege to see them at Ida Noyes hall, only a few people in the audience. As is usual, few recogize genius in its time.
Me too. One of the great features of Hyde Park in those days (late 60s early 70s). I think the Ida Noyes gigs were before they went to Paris or just after their return.I didn't really "get" them until much later....
You don't need to understand, you just need to stay with it. All those into electronic minimal shit should listen to this perfect example of how to built a track
roscoe mitchell- stage left, lester in the middle, joseph jarmen- stage right, malachi favors maghostut- bass, famadou don moye- drums. funky, scary, beautiful, timeless and immortal. ken burns had it so wrong.
I went back through the comments, yeah Malachi Favors...I need to go buy more AEOC records. sadly i didn't see them "back in the day" but did catch back to back shows at Yoshi's in 2003...still fantastic.
thank you for posting. wow, the holy grail of transcendent uplifting fonk! moye!!! this is a superb video of one of the all time great bands. who are all the players? is it jarman (?), lester bowie and who are the others. what year?
Calm down tone-hearing blacky! My sick, he may have meant a complement, as in "Michael Jordan has some sick skills!" It could be a complement, like bad once was. Still might be, I don't know. But if he meant it as a degredation, he's missing out on some great music. This is almost shocking in it's goodness.
Iba se Baba Malachi and Baba Lester. I danced with the band for a short period of time . I can say that, to a man, every member of the band were truly gentle- men and dedicated artist. Ire Lona atiwo Iponri Orun. Ase !
This is no Heavy Metal and therefore can not be considered serious music! ;)

whatever you play, make it happen, that's what the Art Ensemble of Chicago was doing each time... A particular thought for Lester Bowie.
