Hi, all ... I'm the guy in the blue VW camper van. (The one under the Costco truck.) To those people who said this was all because Washingtonians don't know how to drive in the snow, I grew up in Colorado and never saw anything like this -- it went from a few flakes overhead to a thick layer of ice in a couple of hours. So past experience with snow driving would not necessarily have helped you ... trust me.

@misscollegechick I didn't know anybody here when I moved but now I have made some pretty good friends here.. The one thing about the Seattle people I have met they are not pushy people at all and they let you be yourself and they are very accepting and open to all types of people.. If you visit here I would suggest taking the Seattle to Vancouver Canada day tour and just hang out with the Canadians for a day. If you think Seattle is beautiful Vancouver will blow your mind. I love it here!!

Washingtonians aren't very good drivers in icy and snowy weather. But it's partly because of strict environmental protections that prevent the heavy use of salt.

Washington State has strict laws about using a lot of salt for environmental reasons. So, unlike other areas of the country, or the world, we mainly use sand for traction, which doesn't provide the same results as salt, so we slip and slide, and crash.

Which is fine, I'd rather stay home on icy and showy days anyway.

However, the mayor of Seattle, or the King County Executive, I forget which, has promised that salt will be used more often because of transportation issues.
