Octopuses don't predate just on sharks, they predate on any moving creature they ran into (as long as they are not too big). If they had placed the octopus in a tank with only sablefish, pollock or cod. Then those would have been the octopus favorite meal. Like most sharks, dogfish need to keep moving to keep water passing over their gills to breathe. After the shark was caught, water was no longer flowing through its gills AND it was thrashing strenuously, which uses a lot of oxygen. Think of it like a human being choked and the way the shark slowly stops fighting will make more sense.

Well the simple facts are that most animals will generally predate those of a certain size range they feel comfortable going after.. right? dog vs cats, cats vs birds, birds vs crickets..? you could easily make the argument that octopi are FAR superior predators when you consider the range of creatures they predate.
