Instead of killing the idea of show, why didn't they just reshoot and let him use his real accent? It could have been part of the plotline in future episodes!
They should have given him a southern or boston accent. Flat midwestern accents are really hard cause there's nothing to focus on but flattening out your speech. With southern or boston accents, there is more to focus on and therefore, more of a chance of success.
Not that he did a bad job. He did a great job coming from Scottish to American. I don't think that we would have a problem with it if we didn't know he was Scottish and we weren't all listening for his Scottish accent. lol
Speaking as an American, I think his accent is pretty good! American accents are really hard to do correctly anyway. We're weird. So ALL the credit for doing that well! :D
wait what? this didn't air? why? how come? oh come on! should have given this show a chance and play it like they do all the other crap! And no. this doesn't even look like crap.
Oh man, Scottish accents just don't take to neutral American ones very well. Maybe because they try to learn it in California- two accents with different heavy Rs don't mix! This is painful. And I've even gotten used to watching Hugh Laurie with an American accent!
Um, you guys, the accent's not all that far off. We're all so used to his lovely droll Scottishness that this sounds odd and a little forced. Anyway, the more important point is that his amazing talent is wasted on a script like this. :-/
OH! And just to add to my previous comment *points below* there's a bright side to America. We have a WIDE array of accents. It's not hard to believe the one he's using is AN American accent.
Okay, NO fair! seriously, how is he able to pull off an American accent so well! I mean, it is a TRICKY accent to keep up! Especially if it's not your natural accent! I mean, it's my own accent, and I know it's not easy. No, it's not perfect, but so what? Seriously, last I heard him doing one, it was, frankly, HORRIBLE, but this is AMAZING!!! (not to mention sexy)
I'm not sure if he was trying to speak in an American accent. I mean...at first I thought he was just sticking with his normal Scottish accent. But then, some words...
You know what? The character could just be a Scot who's lived in American a while. I don't care. I want to watch this! :D
Epic Fail on NBC part. They have such crappy shows on that this one would have been refreshing. His accent is alright. He would have gotten a dialect coach to work with to help him perfect it. Good first try with it considering his Scottish one is quite thick. :-) Better actor than most of the ones we have here in the States.
Oh, he's trying though. I'm sure if the show had gotten picked up, he would've gotten a dialect coach and whatnot. This is a pilot and he has a Scottish accent that is VERY hard to mask. From the voiceover to the end of the scene, he really improves. So lay off!
That accent is making me blush. I think most of the reason I'm hearing all the Scottish is because I was just watching Blackpool. Gotta watch this again and listen more closely. I do admit it sounds a bit forced.
He just needed abit more practice at that accent is all. As an American, I think it's not that bad; it doesn't really suit him, I think, but I would definitely watched the show. Also, this may have been just a bad clip, I mean, listening to the Doctor Who audiobooks; he had a decent American accent for several of the characters in there. Still would have loved a Scottish Rex, I love his accent.
Well im not going to be too judmental on the accent, however, many people would have tuned in more, had he kept the british accent, i realize that this is not david tennant fault as more the directors, but i can handle the accent change, many people however could not. Im still looking for the full episode so i can say hey at least i watched it lol.
Why are people being so judgemental? For a scottish man, he speaks a pretty good american accent. He was trying his best and at least give him credit for doing so. It really bugs me that people put him down and tell him that he sucks. Anyone who says that shouldn't be talking because they probably would suck at doing David's scottish accent too. Give him a break. Nobody's perfect. >:P
@lightningboysgirl16 I don't understand it either. Granted, we're all used to his Scottish or English accent, but he's pretty darn good with an American one, too. It sounds a bit Mid-Atlantic with some Appalachian thrown in for good measure, if I were to try to narrow it down to a certain region.
I don't think the accent is necessarily bad, I think it's just very odd to hear him with an American accent. It's not the best by any stretch, but it's not the worst I've heard. It almost sounds like a North American accent.
@ohmagaod I agree. I think it sounds akward now, but after a while, he would have gotten better at it and we would have gotten more used to it, despite the jarring transition. He actually sounds better when he exaggerates it or tries to sounds cocky like when he says, "Is he dead or not?" I totally bought that!
Since it was still it pilot form it would have been nice to work in a plot point to let him retain his natural accent. Probably would have skewed better. Looked like a cute show I would have watched it.
haha. I absolutely ADORE David Tennant but, man I dunno, his American accent is a bit jarring, isn't it?? Maybe it's just that I love and identify him so closely with either his cheeky Scottish or cheeky "Doctor Who" accent. So yeah, American DT is strange =) But still brilliant and wonderful!
Mwah, why oh why wasn't this picked up, NBC?!?!?! Not enough room after all those other "quality" disposable shows you have on your roster?!?!!?
Okay so my friend who's never seen anything with david in it comes into the room and sits behind me to see what I'm doing because he's bored. So as I stumble across this clip and hear his accent, I can't help giggling like an idiot the whole time, while my friend tries to figure out 1, what's wrong with me. and 2, what's wrong with his voice. It does sound a little off, but it's still nice :3
Usually a British person doing the American accent sounds kinda... whiny. Tennant is no exception. This writing doesn't seem exceptional, but yes, a British Rex would have been less distracting for those in the know, and might have freed up his performance for those that aren't.

I don't like this on him... he sounds fake. Maybe that's because I have heard him in his own lingo too many times, but I didn't have a problem with his RP, so that can't be it.
@hcvang His accent is good, in my opinion; He's scottish, not british, but used an Estuary English accent when playing the Doctor; Don't judge his accent!
This is a bit like watching Men Who Stare At Goats with Ewan McGregor. Apparently them Scottish people can't really do good American accents.. All I hear is WRONG
I really could've gotten used to the accent really I could have, because it would have meant that David Tennant would be sharing his brand of awesome on this side of the pond.
LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL this is supposed to be an American accent? I thought it was his natural accent until I read the comments. Oh well. At least we know that even his failures are adorable!
Why was this not aired? How can the TV execs know if it'll be popular or not if they don't even see it's ratings? I'd heard that Tennant's American accent was bad but it sounds good here. Will this ever be aired?

This is so bizarre to listen to. I'm sure I would have gotten used to it if I'd watched more than this minute and a half clip, his accent isn't all that bad and it would have gotten much better if he'd kept the gig. Shame NBC didn't pick it up! I would have been very happy to have Mr. Tennant on my television every week.
Um- I'm from America.... And, this is an American accent. It's more of a Northerner/Western accent- Eastern Northern.But- there are about 100 different American accents. So.... I don't know why people are freaking out. Just because he doesn't sound like a southern hick?
no way......daivd..........our anerican accent does not suit you........ sryy!!!!! plz dont take it offfensive!! your me fave!!!! but you sounds awesome with your scottish accent!!! love you!!
Really wanted this one to get picked up. If I didn't know him already I would have suspected because the accent is in and out, but still kinda cute. He's trying and that makes him more adorable. :)
oh, i love you david tennant.. but no, sweetie, that is not an american accent. thats not any american accent.. it sounds like a scottish - brooklyn mix, with a little speech impediment thrown in.. but i still wish this show had been picked up
His American accent isn't actually half bad. . . don't get me wrong I prefer his Scottish or English accent any day, but if it meant watching him on another show, I'll take the American one. . . too bad NBC was completely stupid and didn't pick it up. I actually really liked the idea of it. Plus, David Tennant is AMAZING.
Nooooo I've only ever liked the way one person sounds as an American - John Barrowman. As far as I'm concerned everyone else on the planet should have some sort of British accent.
@emelton07 I agree he has a great voice but you have to admit there are some other great american accents out there.. Morgan Freeman and Walter Cronkite for example.. however I would be just fine if everyone had British accents :)
@thatothergrace Because NBC is run by a bunch of fickle overpaid douchbags that wouldn't know good programming if it slapped them in the face. Case in point, in 2010 they gave Conan the Tonight Show and moved Jay Leno to 10:00pm (instead of just making him retire) then after 6 months they fired Conan so Jay Leno could get The Tonight Show back.
On a final note.......It's great for an actor, especially a highly accomplished actor like David Tennant, to take on more diverse & challenging rolls, like the one David tennant did of Rex, because this way an actor, or actress, can avoid the dreaded stigma of being typcasted as one particular character, explore new rolls, challenges and scripts and most importantly.....stay working! ^_^
What'e even more amazing is that David Tennant had to almost completely lose his scottish accent to do Doctor Who but on very rare occations you can hear that beautiful scottish roll of the tounge when he says some words containing the letter "R", It didn't happen often though. It must have been hard to completely lose his English & scottish accent with this roll of Rex. If I never saw his previous work before this then I prolly wouldn't notice as much.
It's amazing to me to see that quite a few British & Australian actors are dropping, or attempting to drop, thier accents for American television & movie rolls these days! Australian actor Hugh Jackman "(AKA Wolverine from X men)" Hugh Laurie "(The Doctor from the hit TV series House)" The lead character of Sheriff "(from the AMC mini series The walking dead)" And now we see Scottish born actor David Tennat "(AKA Doctor Who)" doing an American Lawer. It's pretty amazing when you think about it
Now I know why this wasn't picked up for more episodes. With that terrible attempt at an American accent, I'd only be able to watch this with the volume turned down
His American accent does sound a bit weird, especially with the "r"s. But I think he's doing pretty well. He reminds me a little of Christian Bale (who also fakes an American accent in Batman) at some points. I do prefer his Scottish accent, or English (in the case of Doctor Who), but he can take whatever roles he wants with whatever accents he wants. He's still immensely talented.
Instead of killing the idea of show, why didn't they just reshoot and let him use his real accent? It could have been part of the plotline in future episodes!

Um- I'm from America.... And, this is an American accent. It's more of a Northerner/Western accent- Eastern Northern.But- there are about 100 different American accents. So.... I don't know why people are freaking out. Just because he doesn't sound like a southern hick?

Wait, I read the script for this and the character was written as a Brit. Why is David doing an accent?

not only is his accent a bit rubbish ... the whole thing looks a bit .... naff!

Really wanted this one to get picked up. If I didn't know him already I would have suspected because the accent is in and out, but still kinda cute. He's trying and that makes him more adorable. :)

Can I just say, POOR AMERICAN ACCENT DAVID!
xfoxxibabex 9 months ago
oh, i love you david tennant.. but no, sweetie, that is not an american accent. thats not any american accent.. it sounds like a scottish - brooklyn mix, with a little speech impediment thrown in.. but i still wish this show had been picked up
CyndiexLou 9 months ago
His American accent isn't actually half bad. . . don't get me wrong I prefer his Scottish or English accent any day, but if it meant watching him on another show, I'll take the American one. . . too bad NBC was completely stupid and didn't pick it up. I actually really liked the idea of it. Plus, David Tennant is AMAZING.

Nooooo I've only ever liked the way one person sounds as an American - John Barrowman. As far as I'm concerned everyone else on the planet should have some sort of British accent.
emelton07 9 months ago
@emelton07 I agree he has a great voice but you have to admit there are some other great american accents out there.. Morgan Freeman and Walter Cronkite for example.. however I would be just fine if everyone had British accents :)
RowrTiger 9 months ago
@RowrTiger True, true. My heart just flutters whenever I hear British accents. lol

Can someone please explain to me why this didn't get picked up? I DON'T UNDERSTAND. it has David Tennant. Why is it not on my tv?
thatothergrace 9 months ago 84
@thatothergrace Because they pitched it to the idiots at NBC. Nobody at NBC is smart (except the guy that picked up Chuck).
RemyCoolX 9 months ago 3
@thatothergrace Because they're too busy trying to put out new shows like Happily Divorced that have people like Fran Drescher in them. Sad.
bibibabkagirl 7 months ago
@thatothergrace Because NBC is run by a bunch of fickle overpaid douchbags that wouldn't know good programming if it slapped them in the face. Case in point, in 2010 they gave Conan the Tonight Show and moved Jay Leno to 10:00pm (instead of just making him retire) then after 6 months they fired Conan so Jay Leno could get The Tonight Show back.
ConversationBomb 6 months ago
@thatothergrace it is yet to start i think its starts in late 2011 or some time 2012 the network has waiting for the ok

This actually seems pretty interesting, I really wish this episode could be found somewhere :( David is still awesome even with an american accent.
KeenonKH 9 months ago
On a final note.......It's great for an actor, especially a highly accomplished actor like David Tennant, to take on more diverse & challenging rolls, like the one David tennant did of Rex, because this way an actor, or actress, can avoid the dreaded stigma of being typcasted as one particular character, explore new rolls, challenges and scripts and most importantly.....stay working! ^_^
darthsideous1968 9 months ago
What'e even more amazing is that David Tennant had to almost completely lose his scottish accent to do Doctor Who but on very rare occations you can hear that beautiful scottish roll of the tounge when he says some words containing the letter "R", It didn't happen often though. It must have been hard to completely lose his English & scottish accent with this roll of Rex. If I never saw his previous work before this then I prolly wouldn't notice as much.
Brilliant Job tho and good luck!
darthsideous1968 9 months ago
@darthsideous1968 I personally like the bit in Doctor Who where they take on a werewolf and David Tenenant is "squee-ing" over it.

It's pretty amazing when you think about it
darthsideous1968 9 months ago
GOD I wish this had aired...need my David fix!
mulinlin7 10 months ago
Now I know why this wasn't picked up for more episodes. With that terrible attempt at an American accent, I'd only be able to watch this with the volume turned down
RefusetoListen 10 months ago
His American accent TOTALLY has a Scottish lilt at the end of every word.
Stefernie2 10 months ago
Great acting from Tennant as always...but...I think he needed just a little more voice coaching to perfect the accent.

Cricket24 10 months ago
Are you serious? His accent is not that bad,
In the end of the clip it gets better.
