He actually came from Coalwood, WV. I do know his grandkids. Well, I met them once or twice, and I've seen them because they went to my school at one time. One of the rocketboys came to my school to talk to us about the movie and what really went on.

Awesome movie. I pictured him a bit different in my mind but that's OK. He's still an inspirational figure!

If you like inspirational movies like this where the protagonist achieves his goal despite all the setbacks, you should read The Hidden Secret in Think and Grow Rich. It shows you the natural process of goal achievement and once you read it and watch this movie again, you'll see how Homer used it to naturally achieve his goal. You'll even see that you used it too.

Although the movie "October Sky" was wonderful, the book it was based on, "Rocket Boys" was better. Homer is a great storyteller and writer. The other two books of his that I have read, "The Coalwood Way" and "Sky of Stone", both related to his home town, are even better. Do yourself a favor and read these as well.

He is one AMAZING writer...If you're going to do anything, read his books. The movie is good, but the books are AMAZING. They made us read Rocket Boys aka October Sky in reading last year, and I absolutely loved it (after saying there was no way i would like such a dumb book...). I'm currently reading The Coalwood Way, and I like it also.

Yup...The Coalwood way is the best book I ever read. Homer has some serious game. I drove through Coalwood two weeks ago (I'm stationed at Wright-Patterson AFB) to see this amazing history.
