Like I said before, this animal is not distressed. Googling "elephant painting abuse" will result in reports of abuse (same with "horse racing abuse", etc). That is not to say that they are all abusive. Maetaman is famous for its gentle training.

Forcing an elephant to do basic things such as walking forward on command could be taught through beating them but teaching them such a high level of training with a heavy hand would be impossible. Plus, it's obvious here that the elephants are relaxed and expressing themselves. An animal that has been beaten would be fearing the next bout of violence, and hence not be able to concentrate on such a demanding task.

While it's pretty amazing, elephants weren't meant to be able to do this kinda stuff, the only way you could get an elephant to draw a precise picture would be ethically dubious operant conditioning: i.e. "Do it right, or I hit you with a large electric rod".
