  • omg i'm so confused lol i can hear the difference between the tom and the bass but the bass sounds pretty fast?!?!!

  • what kind of tuning would you recommend for the floor tom? Quite low, very low, etc?

  • Hah, I've heard someone doing that before and had no idea what they were doing. I think I'll learn that with my left foot to build it up a little. =]

  • thank this really improved my drumming when i do my drum solo at school i will be sure to minchion who tought me

  • what drumheads are those

  • I have no coordination to do this yet. I spent about 45 mins probably no luck yet. My left hand always messes up and weakens on after snare hit when opening the hi-hat.

  • That isnt slowed down dude. how do you do this

  • Are you using Heel-Toe technique? Or are you just a god?

  • that's such a sweet beat i wish i played the drums =(

  • start! :P its worth it believe me!!!! :P

  • Awesome bro

  • dude how do you do this? i do it easily with a double bass and floor tom but way better single footed

  • LMFAO "lets speed that up a little bit" an then you start goin nuts, fuckin pro.

  • I watch your videos when i get frustrated and think i "need" a double pedal. I wish i could double kick that fast...

  • SIC!!!!!

  • holy hell. im gunna be workin on this forever!

  • I really dig your positive vibe...and I'm amazed at your talent. Thanks for the lessons....

  • MIKE I hope you're using ear protection!!!!

  • MAN!

    this is really hard!

i can get it but i can only do it slower then the beat we is using.

But this is way harder than it looks and it looks IMPOSSIBLE!

    Your amazing mike.

  • I finally got this down last week :D hardest thing ever D: lol

  • That's awesome bro. Even though we have never met I am totally proud of you my friend.

    Peace,

  • I can't believe that's done with one foot only! :O Sick, sick, sick. Love it.

  • How the heck do move your bass drum foot so fast???

  • its called heal toe

  • good lessons! thanks!!! i'm learning now! god bless you!!!

  • You excelent and a nice guy,a real pro.

  • Wow dude, you seroiusly sound like freakin John Bohnam, I always thought no one could do what he could do on a single peddle, but I stand corrected.

  • Bro ur a hero to aspiring drummers

  • Youre amazing Mike!

  • wow, just wow

  • It's nice that he's articulate.

  • holy shit man, thats insane, wat do u do with yur foot to get it so fast? or is it just heel toe? AHHH that was amazing

  • that guy can fucking groove

  • i will try to learn that kind of fills :)......

  • not sure if i spelled this right.. but that beat when its together reminds me of that gojira song eurostatic surgery or something like that its the track 9 on the way of all flesh:D

  • your amazing :) you should have a go at guitar hero drums, you would 1 foot all the hard double bass parts :P

  • dude u are amazing

  • what drum heads are those on the toms?

  • You should do footcams when you're doing this like this.

  • when he was like "let's speed it up a little bit", i was thinking how could this get any harder. he is way better then travis barker.

  • thats crazy bro!

  • DAYUUM!!!!!

    this might take a while

  • hey mike just want to say that you're fucking awesome thanks for the free lessons

  • all i have to say is that ive beenn playing the drums for a year now and the hope that i will be as good as you one day is what keeps me going..

  • Hey Mike nice drumming, can you post a video showing 1+1 32ths notes (1 kick bass drum + 1 right hand on floor tom)? I've heard on many drummers such as Vinnie Colaiuta. Regards

  • Hey Mike, do you think you will ever travel to Edmonton A.B.? Perhaps a drumming seminar?

  • holy shit

  • whos better him or portnoy

  • you cant compare...portnoy is an active drummer & this one is a teach...each one in his field.

  • first second i watched this video and i saw immediately how badass you are. impressive!

  • Why the HELL are you NOT in drummersworld?

    Jesus your amazing,

  • Don't ask me, ask them. lol.

  • dude, you kick ass

  • Hey Mike!!

I used this lesson when i Play Black Sabbath's cover of Paranoid and it sounds very cool.

All the people are like: "Dude, this guy is using a double pedal" I think you already get used to that kind of comments...

Thanks a lot mike! You're the best man!

    Cheers From México City!

  • Sounds like a thousand horses striding down a hill!

  • Dam!

  • thats pimp your drums sound great so do you

  • I love 4:12 =D

  • Just out of curiousity...Why do you freaks post comments on here just to talk dirty about people. He's trying to help out beginners. I'm pretty convinced he could school people like you. If not why don't you post some videos instead of watching these to talk lameness?

  • hahaha somewhat slow

  • that's tough to get both sides of the body to think in that manner. this is going to take some practice molding them together.

  • this is gr8...its dumb people thought he was double bass...they obviously cant hear the differences of drums on a set to save their lives

  • very interesting. There is some indipendence in this exercise.

  • what did you guys expect ? he put up a video explaining how to make it sounds like double bass with one foot, so why are you all like " NO "? if he was gonna write a book about it he obviously knows what hes doing and how to make it sounds good.

  • that video is crazy...best solo ever!

  • that was so fucking awesome :L

  • Haha..i love when he say's he'll play it somewhat slow. I can barely do half that speed!

  • have to have a good pedal to do that!!!

  • Nah, he uses a DW4000, which is the bottom of the range.

  • what foot technique do u use for the bass drum

  • jesus H christ!

  • THE F@$!????

  • mike this is not a shot at your playing at all but just a curious question, do you by chance use triggers for the bass drum? either way super impressive but if you are that powerful with doubles at that speed without triggers , your not human, your god

  • That floor tom and bass drum sounds damned tight.I always found i got faster speed on the bass drum pedal when playing the hats with left hand.

  • fucking great

  • i hear him hit the floor tom once. and its wayy to clean to be a single bass

  • Then how does he open and close the hi hat?

  • im pretty sure i hear double bass the entire time!

I thought it was double bass with one foot

  • And im pretty sure you have no idea what you're talking about (not so)koolkid8906.

He IS using one foot he just has incredible speed and chops.

Maybe you should practice more and stop trying to critique better players than you. Punk.

  • how the fuck do u double up like dat

  • dude your a beast!!! rock on man, great technique-something i do not have,,, you make me want to practice,,

  • amazing o.o

  • im to poor to get a double bass and can already play like that with one foot, but i'll definately incorporate this into my playing.

  • 2:29 hehe, a little bit faster XD

  • let*s try it a little faster... good joke man xDDDD

i'm a starter and this is fucking difficult... xD

but the time will come and i'll make it xD

    greez

  • haha yea this prolly aint the best to start on ;) dont owrry tho you'll get it

  • has anyone been able to get this down? cuz in the video there is a huge gap in between bum bum/ bum bum and then hes like flying...so...im just curious if anyone was able to put this together and if so please tell me...cuz i can't get this going much faster than like 176 bpm...which is slow as shit...

  • i hope u mean in 16th notes cuz in 32nd notes that would be godly.

  • I did. Essentially you have to make sure your single pedal doubles and right hand doubles are in great chops, then putting the left hand part is rather simple. It took me some time (mainly because both my foot and hand doubles sucked when I started working on this). Thanks Mike, for letting me know how useless a double pedal can sometimes be.

  • holy crap

  • "and now we'll just speed that up a little bit." lol

  • dude im starting a band and i need to figure out some of these drum parts im not a drummer but i can play but this, i will most definitely use this

  • i always played single bass, wanted to learn crazy double bass patterns for effect. This is going to be great when i get it down! Thanks Mike!

  • hes probably got quad peddles

  • mate hes just got sick technique.who the fuck uses quad pedals!!??

  • o m g amasing

  • Wow! Great stuff, really...

  • nice i found this! this technique is great, thanks for sharring pal. .

  • You make it looks so easy it's insane.

  • Um, i dont play drums, and i'd like to learn, but if your using one foot to kick, and the other foot for the high hat, why does it look like your using both feet to kick instead of one playing bass drum, and one foot to control the high hat? is it just shitty video or am i blind?

  • hes, lifting the left foot to open up the hi-hat, and hes damn quick with the right

  • gostey!!!!!!!!1

  • I can´t believe that he is doing that with only one single bass pedal.

    it´s so faaast and blasts.

  • sounded like you were playing deliverance by opeth

  • that is great and all, but you can hear the difference between bass drum and floor tom. It won't hold if you are doing recording or beatblasting. you will need your right hand for other syncopation.

  • dave1122drum,

I totally hear what your saying and as you can tell I don't play metal. I did use this on major label recording for a song call Tripwire and Modern Drummer said that I over dubbed the double bass because it was impossible to play 32nd notes while opening and closing the hi hats, lol.

These lessons are meant to give people something different than what they see over and over again on Youtube, to get people to open their mind to new things on the kit.

  • ive never played drums. but watching this was entertaining enough to look up more episodes.

    very nice.

  • you're awesome!

  • i love you!!!

  • I like your teaching style. I have been playing for 30 years, and you still make me go....Hmmmmm. From time to time. Keep up the good work!

  • at first im like: 30 years... yeah right

but when i saw your name.... i belived you 100%

  • I like this better than a regular double bass groove.

  • thank you.

  • this is why mike johnston is my favorite drummer

  • this is why mike johnston is my favorite drummer

  • takes skill to do that shit

  • no doubt this guys awsome

  • hello Mike, what is the title of the book you made?

    thanks

  • how you play bass drumso fast

  • practice, man.

  • simply amazing

  • what a beast

  • ok here is a talent

  • thats awsome does enyone no wat drum heads hes using i wont my kit to sounfd pretty much like that

  • i think just evans g2 clear heads with evans damper rings! but itll be hard to get ur kit to sound like that unless u have the same kit and tune it the same exact way as him! and plus drums mics make his kit sound different over a video!

  • unless you have a dw set, with the same plys and wood, gl XD

  • Damn... that's all i have to say

  • when he said i'll play it slow the 3rd time...i think he meant the opposite, the next one was light speed. kudos man

  • i can almost do this now thanks mike im still struggling with the 1e and 2e on my left hand but i got the rest down

  • Dude that was freekin awsome.. I used to practice it the day after now but i cant still get it perfectly...

  • Dude your ripping that up! thumbs up!

  • isnt what he really doing is playying quads with one bass drum and his right hand and playing something over it??

  • no dude he's doing exactly what he says he's doing. He's freakin Mike Johnston!

  • One of the best teachers in i-net i´ve ever seen

  • dehgehdehgehdehgehdehgehdeh!

    lol 32nd notes

  • a little bit :P

  • At 2:39 it looks like hes playing a normal double kick

  • i dont know anything about drums but im smart enough to see that hes also hiting a pedal for the symbol thing... see it moving? i dooo

  • yea u lift ur foot up and the hi hat opens up!

  • I'm pretty sure people are noticing that too, but we are even smarter to realise he's using his left foot to keep time, like a personal metronome.

  • hahaha!if you mean the hi-hat then yes he is using his left foot to for that..

  • damm good ;)

  • How do you get your toms to sound like that

  • Great players are everywhere, but great players who can teach are RARE! Thank you a million times for these videos!

  • Comment removed

  • fuckin sick

  • i would like to say- awesome

  • u said u wrote a book about this. Where can i get it?

  • I made the same things with my band in 1997!!

  • badass

  • Oh that sounds so sweet in the ending. That's just totally my style of drumming. The sound of awsomeness!

  • theres no way i can play that fast though xD
