I'm sure he did and can only assume that it wasn't a "set" plant but one that had to be made or "squeezed" and if they were set as they appear to be towards the top cushion, then he may have felt it was safe to approach from that angle as it would squeeze toward the top rail and not the pocket. However, with such a thin contact and playing with the nap, the balls didn't react as he anticipated. Long story short....he fucked up.
