I wish there was a lawyer who we could contact about this issue Hp should not be allowed to get away with selling inferior products. I paid 2000.00 for mines brand new and that is to much money for one of there products acting like this!!!
Problem solved, had this happen to me and it is a build up of static in the touch controls. If you do the steps above it will go away, it happened to me all the time the first few weeks i had it since then it's been about 4 months since it's happened last.
I bought this same laptop as a refurb from ebay...it does that same thing...I had Vista on it at the time and i called HP to see what they could do but they only had me uninstall and reinstall a driver for the QLB's and wifi...That didnt solve the problem so I installed Windows 7 professional full version and the problem went away for 3 days and came back even Worse...It even does it in Linux OS too...HP knows this is an issue but doesnt do anything about it much...Im pissed....
it does it on mine if I hold the volume to long....but I agree they could have done better with it cause i use my mouse to controll my volume cause it pisses me so bad
Good luck getting any where with HP. They lost mine three times at their repair centre, then said it was my fault for, and I quote "Not having a distinctive looking laptop".
Hope you get it sorted soon. That would count as your second repair. One more and you get a brand new unit.

That happened to my laptop too. Try changing it from treble to bass or the other way around. that worked for me.
