  • Bokken swords?

  • So, where do i go if i want the sort of fighting they have in movies. No disrespect, but this seems kind of boring. Each fight lasts under 2 seconds? I'd rather see combo's, blocks, and full swings than two guys trying to tap each other on the head.

  • give them a light saver.

  • OPEN YOUR MOUTH!

  • i think if they are using real sword they both be dead

  • @9htsky of course.

  • omg all this screaming. You should hear the women, it's like watching a japanese video game. As a woman, I'm not a screamer....I guess kendo is not for me..too bad..

  • is 17 a okay age to start kendo or is it too late?

  • @muscularmonkey Your okay. As long as your pratice

  • @muscularmonkey kendoka is not jedi

  • @muscularmonkey It's a fine age. :-)

In Japan, at the Kitamoto seminar, I saw young kids practice and they would have shamed most adults whith whom I have practiced.

  • @muscularmonkey Too late? Are you planning on a professional career in kendo? Go with your dreams man.

  • Also, how much force does one need to apply to his/her opponent in order for the strike to be awarded a valid point? I presume just grazing or lightly touching the opponents strike zone with the wooden ken isn't enough. Are there other factors that are considered when awarding points other than strike location and strength as well as who hit the other first?

I appreciate any/all sincere answers to my questions.

  • I'm sure the judges don't have access to high speed cameras when they award points so how do they determine who gets the point when the two competitors simultaneously strike each other (in valid scoring zones)? For example, at the strike at 3:05, both Mr. Teramoto and Tanakabe struck the other's head armor (with what seems like significant force) but why did Mr. Teramoto get the point? Was his technique somehow "better"?

I'm just curious as to how the kendo scoring system works.

  • @yudanielk i think the judges cant see exactly who cut first in this case but teramoto's cut had more kikentai, the criteria a cut is judged on. in basic terms, teramoto's cut had more spirit and the cut was more powerful. his synchronisation was better which is why all the shinpans gave him ippon. also his quite elaborate use what looks like katsugi waza(pulling shinai to his left in a do feint) to open up takanabe's defence shows perfect seme to create and seize and opportunity.

  • those ppl who talks about killing each other in a real sword fight doesnt know SH*T about kendo,

seriously, like we need you to tell us they will both die in real life?

for god sake dont even try to criticize when u duno anything about kendo

  • i dont like sports but if its kendo then I'll happily join in

  • Japanese have computer for their brains.

  • @ThaiBettas I know right, I may not understand the rule as much as he does, but heck, he confuses me right there.

  • if this was a real fight, they'd both be dead - kudos for the second guy who dies

  • I was born in the wrong country in the wrong era.

  • @veestormcourage i know me to

  • @veestormcourage if you had been born in that era, you would've had to have been nobility or you wouldn't have been allowed to even own a sword.

  • @lebeauluke1 Does European nobility count? Back then, my ancestors living it up as nobles in Italy. But nothing says I'd cry if I trained with a different weapon. Where there's a will. Also, how could they keep track in, say, the Sengoku period when there were corpses eveywhere? Or fast-forwarding to the birth of modern kendo, by that point dojos were accepting commoners seeking advancement.

  • @lebeauluke1 sengoku period witnessed a lot of social stratification through martial abilities of warriors of lower casts. after or before Sengoku, this wasnt the case. besides, he could always do sojutsu with a bamboo spear :)

  • @veestormcourage me too man, me too, i'm dominican

  • Such an awesome compilation ~ !

  • @MrBullshittliar You do realize that the weapons they are using are much lighter than an actual blade right? You also realize most of the scored hits are to the helmet, the thickest bit of armor on any warrior? You realize as well that a katana is a poor choice when you need to defeat heavy armor due to the curve and poor thrusting point? I'm sure you are not aware that full medieval plate armor weighs only 60 lbs, much less than modern soldiers carry.

  • @demomanchaos Less? I thought it'd be heavier.

  • @mikeymarshful Bamboo weighs quite a bit less than steel. Generally, the bamboo swords are also hollow meaning they weigh even less.

  • @demomanchaos I mean the armor.

  • @mikeymarshful Full medieval plate armor only weighs about 60 lbs. It is form fitted to the individual for minimum hindrance. The mail that you see in the gaps doesn't cover everything below the plates, it is just part of the cotton/wool gambeson worn underneath for padding.

Modern soldiers in full kit can be carrying upwards of 120 lbs depending on their combat role (Machine gunners have the most to pack around).

  • @demomanchaos Wow... Really? I mean having to deal with bullets and all... I would've thought modern armor would be lighter...

  • @mikeymarshful Modern armor itself is lighter, but soldiers don't just carry their armor anymore. A modern battle rifle weighs more than a great-sword (large swords weigh 8-10 lbs, an unloaded AK-47 is roughly 9.5 lbs), plus all the ammo they carry for it (15 mags or more), plus their sidearm and its ammo, hand grenades, and other equipment needed to fulfill their combat role. All a medieval knight had was his armor, dagger, and sword/shield/polearm.

  • @demomanchaos I see. thank you.

  • @demomanchaos they dont have to swing their rifle multiple times too. lol. so at least their arms wont be as tired.

  • @MrBullshittliar half the time the guy doing the striking ends up running into the other guy's sword anyway. both die.

  • @BrickLaya100 only if you have no timing and your slow.

  • Kendo is really wonderful, even in super slowmo!

  • @MrBullshittliar It's nigh-impossible to slice through true plate. Mr. Plate, bare gaunletted, will simply grab Meeseter Kendoka's sword and...run away to sell it :P

Vvhat's vvith your name? Are you lying again?

  • crazy fast

  • you have to have hawk eyes to be a ref in kendo

  • i love!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! kendo

  • If they fought with real swords, they both would be dead with that men aiuchi.

  • holy Shini

  • bruce lee?!!?!? playing kendo!?!? WOTOOOHH

  • Holy those Shinais are bending like rubber!!

  • fuck this shit with real katanas both would be dead anyway

  • 3:16 to 3:28 is the very definition of epic. Pure poetry in motion, coupled with an amazing song...

  • two shinais !!! Nitoryu

  • damn to be a referee there u need to be able to see a fucking bullet lol

  • That guy's Kiai at the start is awesome.

  • Wait, wait.

    TWO stick-swords?

How in the world is that fair?

  • @SonarWavePulse when practicing nitou , your longest shinai is shorter than the long, two hands one. Plus, it takes longer time to re-arm this shinai after a miss.

  • Whouldn't a helmet protect straight down Men?

  • Wait, why did red get a point when white clearly showed like... better reflex and adaptation? I know that red hit first, but shouldn't the point be given to white for being much quicker?

  • @barbedwire88 From my understanding, Kendo is based on Kenjutsu which samurai practiced in order to learn to kill with their swords (kendo has a different objective). If you take it from the traditional perspective of kenjutsu, the 2nd cut wouldn't matter even if it showed more skill because the person executing the 2nd cut would be dead. For example, if someone scored a goal in football, and then the other person scored one before the ball was put back into play, the 2nd goal wouldn't count.

  • :41 donk.

  • what a great match

    i wish i was there

ill probably be O_O "wtf just happen"

  • I take it that in a real swordfight chances are that both contenders would end up dead or severily wounded.

  • kendo is all about respecting your oponent and knowing also about yourself.

this is like the real "JEDI"

  • Wait at the beginning a guy had duel swords. o.0

    SO MUCH WANT

  • @DoomNeb

they aren't the same length, so its not really duel wield.

    wakizashi isnt considered a sword

  • great sport!!

  • @sum1ukoh

But when are you also going to fight someone just as good as you with real swords? and I'm sure they'd be more careful

  • "Bamboo Sword" is less interesting than the real thing but i'm glad i watched it first.

  • that's why there are THREE PROFESSIONAL referees :)

  • This is totally insane.. The referee must have eyes with ability of 16x high speed camera, I guess..

  • i'm here to know kendo but i can't understand. :(

  • @Chroma2021 You obviously know nothing about martial arts...

  • kimdo is fake and surface kendo!

  • @Chroma2021 why you posted stupid comment like little bitch?

  • woah, kendo is awesome!

  • No tsuki? I was waiting for that xD

What you can learn from an anime surprices me sometime ^_^

  • Those referees are on cocaine or maybe they have a speed camera implanted in their brains.

  • Whats up with all these 0.009 secounds dont matter bla bla.

Its a sport, if they would live in japan around 1200th centurie and fight, no it wouldnt mather. both would be dead at the same time. But this is a sport so they dont want to kill eatch other. And you get score by hitting your opponent. And it would be kinda hard to judge if you dont know who that hit first. Even those 0,009 secounds is important to the judge.

  • I don't know why but I lol'd when they showed the slow mo version from 0:30

  • Red hit first because he started his men strike from the centre position, while white was striking from the side.

  • Meh. This is why I don't like "sport" swordsmanship. Especially all those reckless moves that are used to hit an opponent 0.009 seconds sooner that he hits you. Like that would ever help. In real fight you actually have to worry about staying alive.

  • Both Teramoto and Takanabe would've died if they used real swords. You don't survive with 0.009 difference.

  • @sum1uknoh not really cuz once the sword hits ur head ur probaly going to drop ur sword and start dying on ur ground. so actraully 0.009 difference dose make the difference

  • @amessenger4god78 even if the his hand lets go the momentum of a katana would still kill him and i don't think he will let go in 0.009 seconds thats not even a hundreth of a second by the time the blade penetrates his skull and goes into his brain the sword has already started slicing into his own skull

  • @amessenger4god78

You still have a whole second after you DIE, he wouldn't even be dead by the .009 seconds and at the speed these guys are going they would probably slice each other both into two, this is just stupid this whole video no way would you fight like this in real life

  • @Kraze4L Exactly.. the rules for these tournaments are shit.. and im not saying the two guys in the video suck because they don't, theyre insane.. but they shouldnt be limited on what action to take just because of the point system, the guy who lost couldve avoided that last strike, he saw that shit coming from a mile away... kendo shouldnt be a sport, its a deathmatch, I wouldnt lunge at a person knowing i would get hit as well, i would parry or move away

  • @sum1uknoh double KO

  • @sum1uknoh AND, your point!? wtf (does not stand for world taekowndo federation either!)

  • @blugularis The point of my comment is that oftentimes, when traditional martial arts such as Kendo or Taekwondo are turned into sports, they lose touch of their realistic combat roots. If common sense was involved in the judging, the round between Teramoto and Takanabe would've ended in a draw. It is saddening that great martial arts are dying as time goes on because of stupid things like scoring systems.

  • @sum1uknoh It's so true, the techniques here would never be used by a real life swordsman who's life depended on it. You wouldn't be looking for the cut that just lands first and lets you get your own face chopped in the process.

  • @sum1uknoh Kendo was always a sport. The main point is to learn manner and discipline, not how to fight with a sword. That might go with your comment about scoring systems, but the point of Kendo is not to learn how to fight well with a sword. For instance, the neck is one of the vulnerable points but to guard it by keeping the head low would be considered unsportsman-like conduct. This has always been the case, even though in battle you wouldn't want to do this.

  • @sum1uknoh No, you're stupid. If something like modern judging didn't exist then there would be NO martial arts tournaments in order for you to complain about. The point of my comment is you should've watched the video and moved on.

  • @sum1uknoh well as far as kendo goes its not like were gonna whip out our steel blades and try to kill each other... Kendo IS a sport not a martial art. When in the hell am i going to carry around my jukdo and defend myself with it....??

  • @sum1uknoh It was my thought too when I saw these pictures.

  • @sum1uknoh well, you're right, if you take the sport into the real life (swords), actually there is a lot of things that you can do in shiai but not in a real situation, like moving your head away to avoid an ippon men, you were cut anyway in a real situation, so there's so many situations like that.

  • @sum1uknoh of course, but noone would fight this aggrassiv with sharp, metal swords.

  • @MrEragon899 Samurai with no fear of death will. It can be achieved with daily training.

  • @sum1uknoh key word here: "would've"

  • @sum1uknoh And if they were using real swords, Takanabe would've won after the first point. Kendo's not about real swordsmanship.

  • @themarl Wouldn't it be more appropriate to call this sport "shinaido" or "bokkendo", then?

  • @themarl That right! nobody in this world can handle real swords as fast as shinais....only 520 gr. This is Kendo and no Real fight. This move was perfekt. He want to hit his body, but suddenly he stroke instinctly to the head. Beautiful

  • @bampfbua

There are people who practice Kendou using "Bokken(Bokutou):wooden sword",bokken is much heavy as steel sword.

  • @sum1uknoh Yeah, I agree.....just goes to show you how great men like Musashi were.

  • @sum1uknoh maybe....but with the real sword and maybe the armor the attack would have change target and finaly stabbing the armor instead of the flesh....if we assume that the one would have made his move with great force ans speed...

  • @sum1uknoh AGREED

  • @sum1uknoh u also dont survive machine guns nowadays

  • i h8 it how they yell like pussies

  • @CrimsonGetsu you're an idiot... its a way of channeling spirit and synch your mind with your body.

  • @brendameistar your a fag for beleiving in that stupid shit...

  • I want to see the outcome with real katanas..

  • I'm just getting back into Kendo after an absence of some years - these guys are incredibly fast. Very inspiring stuff.

  • props to referee

  • I just joined Kendo and duuuuude.... yall need to join.
