All the real original punks had long hair. Look at the Stooges, MC5, Dictators, Ramones and the Dolls. The punks invented the spikey short haircut thing as a fashion statement years after the music (the really radical shift in culture) had already occurred.
the 70's just had a collection of individuals being individual. the majority of youth today doesn't want to be original. they want to follow a movement. if you want a certain reality, you can't expect someone else to create it for you. DIY FOR LIFE.
all of you going on about today's youth not rebelling, don't get it - there's nothing for them to really rebellion against... half of them don't have a whole lot of boundaries to push. The other half are so distracted by some I-whatever they couldn't care less.
All the "causes" have been used up and are boring.
Besides, every "counterculture" has been turned into product for the last 20 or 30 years.
you have probably grown up and are no longer exposed to the energy and creativity of youth, were not running around gobbing on each other anymore, or sniffing as much glue. Please dont think the soul of youth culture is lost.. IT THRIVES.
@pervsgrundy Think about it man. The youth is dead. The energy is different. The hate is towards each other and not towards a common enemy. The creativity is partying, drinking, making money and looking good. There is no fun is a disease of people being the showcase. Everyone is playing it safe. Where is the risk? Where is the revolting? The kids are so bad these days it is scarier than any dirty punk.
I can actually believe johnny when he says he's got no heroes cus he's no hero himself and if he was he shouldn't be, he claimed to want to be anarchy, but look at him now, selling butter to the capital masses
I like some of the 60's-70's rock bands i.e. Led Zeppelin, The Who, Cream, Hendrix, T Rex. But that doesnt make a difference. A punk is a punk. Stop with the stupid comments. Joe Strummer was a stones fan.
I remember seeing this at the time...made me laugh..a lot..great times!...Just started to ger really comercial at this time...Lots of yooff mags giving guides on "How to be a Punk Rocker"
@yelldagain yeah its has turned very mainstream now, hate it, and all these emo thing going on, all of them look totally the same, like if no one think for thereselves... for liking punk music, beeing a youth at this time its not sumthing to be proud of, im just 15, but I know more than what you think about punk, ive got in love with it since I first knew about it, its the second thing in my life that has got me passioned about (drumming takes the first place) still hopes high, I guess.
I was born in 61. Too late to become a hippie & too old to be a punk. Through my elderly brother I had the chance to get to know the Stones, the Beatles, Steppenwolf etc. At the age of 12 I became a huge fan of Glam Rock: Slade, Suzi Quatro & Sweet. I thought I was up to date until I heard the first punks songs during 1976/77. Sex Pistols, X-Ray-Spex, The Clash etc. Rock'n'roll came back to its roots.
...youth culture in the 70's was amazing filled with rage ideas creativity energy and passion, where as youth culture today is bland boring and out of ideas and so uptight and conservative....
@anthonynewsome yes generalize two decades as if it were as simple as black and white. I say you're wrong cause the idea's and choices have grown exponentially, which only means it might be watered down. You just have to find your culture that you fit with. I know so many bright artists that speak for my culture atleast.
@Machinelf well the issue here is everything which happened in style & music back then was Original, today bastardised versions are corporate driven - back then youth culture was not part of the system - listen to the music - I'm sure your very contented n happy with your "choice' of artists they fit your level of thinking very well.
@anthonynewsome There is a hell of a lot of original music with very important lyrics out there, most are just on independant labels. I am very content in my choice of artists because they are mine and they speak to what I care about. Which is far from the garbage thats ever on tv or radio.
@anthonynewsome Well if you compare it to how many artists there are out there ya I suppose you are right but I dont watch any music tv channels and find artists with the internet, my brother sent me a spoof on the song whip my hair yesturday and I had never even heard it before, its up to the person to expose themselves to what they want to hear or see.
@101piesaregood U didnt live tru that generation in the 70's & have no experience of that time full stop, todays youth culture is based on fear & ignorance, it allows mainstream to dictate its agenda - homophobia is the biggest single issue with conservative right-wing youth thinking - punk died in 1979
@101piesaregood U have Ur age as 24 so where am I wrong - U didnt live tru that time - thats the difference here - that culture is over - a different time & place - thats a fact - what U have is not punk or the energy or rage of the 70's - your life is not about punk because youth - society today is bland & conservative
wow way to make a broad generalization of todays youth
although i do admit that MOST of the youth today are brainwashed by mass media and consumerism, there are still those of us who don't buy the shit that we see on tv, even though we didnt live in the "years of punk" the punk culture is still alive and it has evolved into something different.
@101piesaregood new - today is nothing like back then - punk never evolved into anything because it was what it was - I still wear DM's - Drainpipes etc but never introduce myself as a Punk - I have bin there done that & like Mods & Bootboys that period has ended - punk was not about fashion & music alone - from 76/79 -
@anthonynewsome Comments like this are so cliche. Some kids are doing interesting things with rock today just as some kids were doing interesting things with rock in the 70's. Punk was a subculture that wasn't that popular, as chart lists show for both the UK and USA in the late 70's. It is only with time that it took cult status, and now everyone and their mother's mother claims to have been a part of it. Most youths in the 70's liked the same old bland crap.
They talked about Sid being the drummer for Siouxie's band. I think Sid was bound to be famous even if he didn't join the Pistols. People like to jump on a band wagon and talk about how talentless Sid was, but all that noise came from Rotten who in my opinion saw Sid as a threat and was Jealous of him getting more attention. Rotten will pretend that he doesn't think that way but, I don't think he is hard to read. Rotten is brilliant but he will attack anything he sees as a threat.
Here's the thing. Back then you couldn't get ahold of alot of this stuff unless there was a music store that carried Punk.. Unless you had friends in the UK sending you stuff. There was no fokking way regular rock radio was gonna play this stuff. So it was all prety much an underground word of mouth and people sharing albums and tapes they'd made. I remember as a kid my first 'Clash' album and just playing it over and over. The record companies were slow to catch on and by the time bands like
...'The Sex Pistols, the Clash, Ramones, Susie & the Banshees, the Damned, Voidiods, either only enjoyed minimal success here or had allready broke up. Alot of this music did lead the way for a more USA radio friendly New Wave style music like the Pretenders and the Police ect ect..
@Maxharddrive64 I have to say though! i think most bands who are punk or rock will have an influence from the clash, ramones, sex pistols or the black flag! punk rock started alot of musicians and give the new inspiration and ideas! for instance U2 ( shitter version of the clash), the edge the guitarist said the clash created u2's rule book
@theebadnun same here or I would been a Metal Head in all I like both Punk,Heavy Metal and Rock also some other music genres which generated from Rock
