The motive for capital investment is principle appreciation. Most people don't receive interest on their investments. Some companies offer dividends, but most do not and yet people still invest in them.
Interest rates actually stunt investment by offering a way to profit from saving as opposed to investing.
this is why the Federal Reserve is currently lending at 0% - to promote investment.

When the Fed maintains a zirp policy while inflation rages, as is the case today, people are forced into these speculative positions.
This is why going long commodities, particularly metals, is currently such an attractive position.

I see savings less as an investment in the future than as a way to avoid risk. But if interest rates are zero bound and the dollar is falling precipitously, which is currently the case, then people must engage in speculation just to stay even.
