I think Nick broke up with Sally after she called in Desperate and dateless. Then he and Tess danced and he bought the ring, but they didn't get together until episode 93. He and Tess weren't really together since season 2 but they were clearly in love. Just there was always something keeping them apart, and for a while, I think both thought it was over for good (in episode 86, Tess asks if it is, and Nick doesn't really answer).

@grongrace Another thought. After Nick kissed Tess in 'Make or Break' he went back to Sally & couldn't stop thinking about Tess. The next episode 'Second Chance' he & Tess guarded her sheep. Nick said they would 'wait as long as it takes (double meaning for the fox as well as their relationship?) Had he broken up with Sally at this point? Then 'Call me Kate' (where Nick & Tess were eating together) then by 'Desparate & Dateless' (where they danced in the paddock) Does that sound reasonable?

@grongrace ALso, why would Sally call Nick 'darling' when she called him in the pub if she knew it was over? Not a term I use for ex's :-)
