The shopping center at 151st Street and Dixie Highway became famous for its cameo in the 1980 film "The Blues Brothers,"where John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd tore through its walls in the movie's mall car chase scene.
In 2010, Quinn pledged $4 million in state disaster relief funds to tear down the structure. In January, contractors received the permits to begin demolition.
i just got back from the disney campground today! we when to the 2 droping slides and the zip lines. They closed the water park down because the florida state regulations changed! They now make you have 3 water pumps and circulated the pools. They were smiwing in BAY LAKE, DIseny called the part (BAY LAGOON). It opened july, 1976 and closed june 2001. Write back and ill sent the pictures we took! its realy cool
Okay. So for ELEVEN years, the music still plays every single day, 4015 days. And every day the lights go on when it gets dark. That's freaking insane. They could remove electricity and save thousands of dollars...
Man you rock. Thank you for showing this. My dad is obsessed with anything Disney so I know the parks like the back of my hand. The music in the parks are wired to the same thing- meaning what plays in one place, plays everywhere else. Only in the actual parks like magic kingdom does that change (different operating system). As for the lights and plumbing still working, I have no explanation for that. Either cool video!
The speakers are on a system link, the speakers are all connected via amplifiers so theres a master amp which is bridged to another amp and another and so on. These cover the themed lands but for the rides they're running on their own amp system controlled in the operating booth.
Please next video Discovery Island, just think about it. it would be your riskiest journey ever and imagine what you will find in there I have to see a video of you guys go there, you guys would be so legendary if you can pull that off!
if its abandoned they would not just continue paying for electricity the parck would be properly closed they would not have lights on probably no running water no music no electricity and the place would be closed up to keep people out
I still say this is BS We were there 3 years ago and it was still "intact" Theres no way you could just waltz into this area, it; also attached to the camp grounds.
i do alot of adventuring in my spare time like this, and by far the creepiest thing ive ever seen is the video of Treasure Island. with the music and lights still on, just like on here. more creepy than anything ive witnessed in person
Oh my goodness out of all the abandoned places I've seen this one definitely creeps me out with the lights and music still going TEN years later. That is absurd. I love how you scan the pool at 4 minutes and then show a picture of what it use to be like. So crazy how it changed.
@Rafflersauce I believe that the speakers at River Country are connected with speakers at another Disney Resort (I've heard Wilderness Lodge was the resort). That's why there is still music playing.
Afraid of competition how sad. Disney has such a good name when it comes to fun , rides and attraction's. Some how i've alway's wanted to visit this water park. Shame to see it go down the tubes.
@Brotherstudios1 When I had gotten a ride from an employee going to the magic kingdom, I had asked if we could go and drive slow so I could see more of it. I also asked why they closed it, he had said, ' Well they closed it due to the other water parks opening... typhoon lagoon and blizzard beach, so they though it'd be a waste to still have it here, what with the popular public water parks.' I went to go peek through the fence last camping trip, and it looks worse than in the video. :(
@Sup3rPin0y hey genius, read the description? Where it CLEARLY states: " Luckily a gate was left unlocked and wide opened so we braved the forest to snoop around this historic Disney attraction."
Why is that area shut down? I read below cause overcapacity crowd? really? wow...I don't think Disney have issues on making the park bigger,,,,well I don't know if someone else has a comment about that.
@XEmeralDQueenX They closed it down because it was a fresh water park not a chlorinated one and there is an amoeba that they found out was common in the south in water when it's over 80 degrees that can go through your nose and into your brain and kill you. It can't survive in chlorinated water so that is why the other water parks are fully operational and this one was closed.
the part in the beginning is still open to the public. its part of the waiting area for Mickeys Backyard BBQ. He had to of gone around the old bird enclosure to get back there because theres only two gates and both of them have locks which look like they havent been touched in years.
cool video. I've been back there once and it was in the middle of the day and it still was very weird. my question to you is how did you get in, where was the access point, and why did you go so late in the day?
The area that has the music playing is not River Country but Mickeys Backyard BBQ . The restrooms and water fountains are to be used by the folks at the buffet . Disney needs another water park since TL and BB close on a regular basis due to capacity crowds.
It would probably be okay to edit out the bits where the camera is just flailing around haphazardly shooting blurred images of leaves and your own pants, but very interesting video. Thank you :3
@kilobas It's right in the middle of a huge lake over by Fort Wilderness Lodge. You can rent a boat and they will take you by it and tell you about it. Idk about getting into though. They probably knew a cast member personally or something. Disney had to close it because it was deemed to be no longer sanitary for one thing (it practically ran on lake water) and when Animal Kingdom opened it was too much money to keep it running. - Been to Disney 201 times as of yesterday and 16 years old. :)
@DiamondDogAngel Thanks dear pal, great information. Really useful, was wondering if you know why there is a empty building in Epcot Center near by the Mexican Pavillion? I think it used to be a old restaurant. Its been closed since many years but nothing indicates what really happen in there.
@kilobas Happy to help! :) Yeah I think I do know what you are referring to. I don't believe that there is any information available about it but you are most likely right. Most likely it was a resatraunt or a gift shop. And,although unlikely, it may have been an area for a preformance that no longer exists to take. place. Depending on how long it was vacant, the company is probably planning on doing something with it or using it for storage or emergency medical equipment, like Discovery Island.
Wow!! I have home vids of this place from the mid '90's. Had no idea it closed and became Dagobah. I actually liked River country, with the swimming hole, wooden swing and all.

If its abandoned why does the music still play and why are the lights still on....also if its been abandoned for a decade why haven't they bulldozed it/done something with it D:
@fleppleman Disney has it's own power station behind the Magic Kingdom which provides much of the power for the parks. I'm guessing that the music and lighting is wired into the ground, so it would be much cheaper to just leave it on all the time. Also, most people don't know that even in the middle of the night, Disney parks keep their music and lights on because it's cheaper than turning them on and off everyday.
@fleppleman maybe cause it would cost them alot money to take it down and since they couldnt use the water park again cause of a new law made in 2001 that made it so they couldnt use the lake water and had to be clean so they figure its cheaper just to leave it. I dont understand though why they didnt shut anything off. I bet if you found the spot that turned the water on for the slides they would still work.

@bomber525 Then why doesn't someone who works for Disney do it? You think the cost of hiring someone to go around turning off music in abandoned parks would be a lot less than the cost to just keep the music on for no apparent reason.
@fleppleman it is closed, try looking at a disney world map, its not listed, but you can oull it up on google and you can see it , i was just on disney property a week ago there is no signs to it or anything it is closed and suppose to be off limits, i think disney has a plan to re open the water park, but re open it as a cleaned chlorinated water, or salt watered park. because the Disney Yacht/Beach Stromalong bay pools were suppose to be salt water with real fish in them but it didnt work out
@xXxM4A1xXx08 I KNOW ITS CLOSED FOR FUCKS SAKE. I wasn't saying if its REALLY closed why is all this still on, i was saying why is the electricity(lights and music etc) still on when its abandoned. Why wouldn't they just turn it all off.
@fleppleman - At 1:15 minutes, when they say the music is still playing and the lights are still on, it's because that is right beside the Fort Wilderness Pavilion. River country's gates, and many of the buildings are on the same grid as Fort Wilderness Pioneers Hall, and that is where the music is coming from.
It is kind of creepy there though. When we visit, we take the kids over there sometimes and let them wander around and explore the parts that are not fenced in
I would never want that attraction to be open again. BRAIN EATING AMOEBAS! Florida lakes when they get hot are deadly. These Amoebas get active when its summer time, when everyone wants to go in the lake. Disney would have had more deaths for sure if they kept this open.
@CastleSnowflake Neither, there was a new law introduced where all the water had to be filtrated. The main lagoon and rapids weren't filtrated and were coming straight from the lake, the only thing that was filtrated was the pool. Since it was too expensive to put in a filtration system, they simply closed it down.
was just there yesterday it was awesome the lines weren"t bad i had the whole place to myself.. it wasn"t scary like this except the music which they now have cut off ...
Cool! I bet there are a bunch of gators in there. As a Florida native myself I can fully grasp how absolutely soupy it must be. The music is really eerie. It's like if the park is sitting there waiting for people to come again, waiting to be reopened. It's very surreal.
We charted a private pontoon boat once for a birthday cruise, they took us over to River Country from the Lagoon and showed us the ruins. It's creepy and awesome.
It looks like everyone just up and left suddenly. I know they didnt but why would Disney close the place and then not touch it again? Not even bothering to shut off the music or the plumbing...and certainly not properly clearing it out
This is sooo cool! It's strange tho, for disney to leave everything there. And they're not reopening,.. they officially closed it & announced it'll say closed... yus. lol tho, you guys got some guts :DD
The fact that the music is still playing is creepy, odd, disturbing, yet interesting. I wonder why they would just leave that playing? The fact that they also left the lights working, and water running is weird. Anyways, it is a great shame to see what this once was, and what it is now. Last time I visited was when I was 5 (in '99) and I vaguely remember River Country. R.I.P!
@BarenakedLadiesLive well actually the music is left on because at the very begining where they were standing is still open to the public...the hoop dee do reveiw is not far at all...hence the music and singing he was talking about..as for the lights...it's a Disney thing...they leave the lights on everywhere....why who knows haha and sadley I never got to experience river country or discovery island...
It's Malaria City now. YIKES! Thanks for posting the "before" pics. It really adds to the creepy factor when you see what it once was in it's glory days. Wow!
Man that brings back some old Memorys when I was a kid. My parents would drive from ohio to my grandpals in lakemack( deland florida) every year. My grand dad would take me there every year. I moved in with my grandpal when I was 19 years old. I built the dolphin hotel when I worked for Hubart Construction. Now Im 42 years old stuck in Ohio. Thanks guys joe
Dont worry about Disney Security. They have no authority whatsoever. Trust me, I used to work for Disney security...it was a joke. They are just greeters with a badge!
@MaggieMae1738 They made a law saying that the water of a park would have to be enclosed which at River Country they cannot do that. Plus the park is so out of shape which really is not shown in the video the hole beach area on the map in not accessible the tubes are gone/stolen. They might as well rebuild the park because it would cost less to make an new park then it would be to fix this one. Watch this video, that is how I got my info:youtube(dot)com/watch?v=40BAY7LuCOo&feature=related
this is crazy how Disney looks like they just up and closed it 1 day and left it to rot. I don't get it...nothing's been removed. Bathrooms were still functional, music still playing...weird.
Disney have probably just left it, because it's cheaper for them than to demolish it.. hopefully one day they'll fix it up or put something new there :D
I work right across the lake from it and have been in there once. its still all there just like in the vid,too bad adam didnt show the slides
darby01 3 days ago

I dont understand though why they didnt shut anything off. I bet if you found the spot that turned the water on for the slides they would still work.

@fleppleman It's probably connected to the same electrical switch as other rides and they just haven't disconnected it.
BriannaDawnc 4 months ago
@fleppleman the music needs to be turned off manually in these parks.
bomber525 4 months ago
@bomber525 Then why doesn't someone who works for Disney do it? You think the cost of hiring someone to go around turning off music in abandoned parks would be a lot less than the cost to just keep the music on for no apparent reason.
fleppleman 4 months ago
@fleppleman it's Disney. Just go with it.
bomber525 4 months ago
@fleppleman look it up it is abandoned they are just showing how it was litterally abandoned and they never re opened
8sball8 4 months ago
@8sball8 I didn't say it wasn't abandoned i was asking why they left the music/lights on(costing them money) in an abandoned park.
fleppleman 4 months ago
@fleppleman it is closed, try looking at a disney world map, its not listed, but you can oull it up on google and you can see it , i was just on disney property a week ago there is no signs to it or anything it is closed and suppose to be off limits, i think disney has a plan to re open the water park, but re open it as a cleaned chlorinated water, or salt watered park. because the Disney Yacht/Beach Stromalong bay pools were suppose to be salt water with real fish in them but it didnt work out
xXxM4A1xXx08 4 months ago
@xXxM4A1xXx08 I KNOW ITS CLOSED FOR FUCKS SAKE. I wasn't saying if its REALLY closed why is all this still on, i was saying why is the electricity(lights and music etc) still on when its abandoned. Why wouldn't they just turn it all off.
fleppleman 4 months ago

Unbelievable... seeing the inner tube still sitting there... it's eery.

I have to agree with most of these comments. It would be cool to see this. I wish it would open again.

They had it closed on 9/11 and never reopened
They expected to come back in a few days which explains music, water, etc.

why do they have music playin and bathrooms working???

y was it closed floods or hurricanes
CastleSnowflake 9 months ago
@CastleSnowflake Neither, there was a new law introduced where all the water had to be filtrated. The main lagoon and rapids weren't filtrated and were coming straight from the lake, the only thing that was filtrated was the pool. Since it was too expensive to put in a filtration system, they simply closed it down.

was just there yesterday it was awesome the lines weren"t bad i had the whole place to myself.. it wasn"t scary like this except the music which they now have cut off ...
metallica4all4you 9 months ago
Cool! I bet there are a bunch of gators in there. As a Florida native myself I can fully grasp how absolutely soupy it must be. The music is really eerie. It's like if the park is sitting there waiting for people to come again, waiting to be reopened. It's very surreal.

It looks like everyone just up and left suddenly. I know they didnt but why would Disney close the place and then not touch it again? Not even bothering to shut off the music or the plumbing...and certainly not properly clearing it out
yamihoole 10 months ago 16
@yamihoole The music and drinking fountains are parts that are still open to the public i.e. on the legal side of the fence.

BarenakedLadiesLive 11 months ago 2
@BarenakedLadiesLive well actually the music is left on because at the very begining where they were standing is still open to the public...the hoop dee do reveiw is not far at all...hence the music and singing he was talking about..as for the lights...it's a Disney thing...they leave the lights on everywhere....why who knows haha and sadley I never got to experience river country or discovery island...

10httrquitr 11 months ago
@10httrquitr how come?
MaggieMae1738 11 months ago
@MaggieMae1738 They made a law saying that the water of a park would have to be enclosed which at River Country they cannot do that. Plus the park is so out of shape which really is not shown in the video the hole beach area on the map in not accessible the tubes are gone/stolen. They might as well rebuild the park because it would cost less to make an new park then it would be to fix this one. Watch this video, that is how I got my info:youtube(dot)com/watch?v=40BAY7LuCOo&feature=related
10httrquitr 11 months ago
@MaggieMae1738 *sigh* in a perfect world they would..but its soooo destroyed and where it lies would make it pretty near impossible...

this is crazy how Disney looks like they just up and closed it 1 day and left it to rot. I don't get it...nothing's been removed. Bathrooms were still functional, music still playing...weird.

Disney have probably just left it, because it's cheaper for them than to demolish it.. hopefully one day they'll fix it up or put something new there :D
