MBV is to shoegaze as Nirvana is to alternative. Everyone starts off listening to MBV, then finds bands like Ride, Slowdive, Pale Saints, ect. who are SOOOOOOOO much better.
Teenage angst? I was 31 when this came out and I thought then (and still do) that this was the finest thing to come out of the 1990's. The album is still one of my favourites even now I'm approaching 51.
Middle-aged angst I guess?
P.S. The heavy bass riffs are missing from the early part of this video, cos this was the video for the single. The album version was much longer.
@Brascofarian uh... did you mean to leave this comment for some other video you were watching at the time? What the hell is angsty about this - or any - RIDE song?
@gumpish Hmm, I guess for me the distortion and subdued vocals, plus the sense of escape in the chorus. Maybe it's just that I was an angsty teenager when this came out and it resonated with me. Maybe have a look at the lyrics to "Nowhere", "Time of Her Time", "Castle on the Hill" and particularly "Going Blank Again" and "Decay"
MBV greatest shoegazing band? Heh, that's your opinion and I definately don't agree. Yeah, MBV is a pretty good band- but whenever I listen to their albums, their material isn't solid. There's always two or three songs I skip on the album because their garbage. However, Ride's albums-- I listen from beginning to end, and love every second of it. In my opinion, Ride is loads better than MBV, and this song is probably one of the greatest shoegazing songs ever.
@GrockJake I pretty much agree with you here. I can listen to Ride albums from start to finish. My favorite of this genre is actually Lush. I love the shit out of them. I guess they hold a special spot with me as I grew up hearing Lush all the time from my sister playing them.
They were great live and this is a great song, probably their peak but it's much better if you get the whole length of the song as it is cut short here.
leave them all behooooiiiiiinnnnd

Ha! MBV are god, RIDE have written some great songs though and plenty of boring ones when you go through their albums.

I was only 16 when this was released, I liked it but I weren't a bloody shoegazer.

Always pisses me off when lazy journo's describe Andy Bell as a bassist turned guitarist...

I like Ride a lot, but I had to vote this down because of the crappy tags, the most offensive of which were Oasis and Britpop.
