The audio sync of his hands looks pretty spot on to me. I spent two weeks in The Big Apple in the summer of '62, and sat three feet from Oscar every night as he gigged at the legendary Basin Street East jazz club with the late great Ray Brown on bass and Ed Thigpen on drums. I was close enough to hear Oscar's voice scat singing his own lines, and Ray Brown singing parallel lines to his solos as well.

@paulostroff99 Mr Ostroff; I don't where you get off wih all this "Canada is GREAT & loving" shit. Be honest here.

@funkagent But that is the case NOT only in the USA but everywhere. No shame necessary!
I'm a jazz musician but i realise most people view music as background entertainment and today's youngsters just haven't got the attention span. A 2 min rap tune and they're done! I grew up back in 1950s-60s Britain where only a handful went to jazz clubs. Most just preferred Gerry & The Pacemakers. Jazz has always been a minority club.(sadly)
The hat? She probably made the trip from the Village, figuratively if not literally. It keeps the sun from melting her mind, although the music here will melt it anyway--in a good way. I'm digging those drums.
Thank you for all the pleasure, Oscar. You were unique. It will be a fascinating four hander when you join Art Tatum Up There ... Mike Jones, Jackie Jones and Norman Giller of SootsJazz. We are organsing a tribute featuring UK Oscar soundalike Craig Milverton at the Lights Theatre, Andover, on January 25. British TV has been disgraceful with their lack of proper tribute programmes to a true genius.
Weird...on this clip he sounds kind of like Mccoy Tyner, with those left hand pedal points. Makes me realise how similar their styles were in some ways.
Glad to have met you in real life. It was one of the greatest moments of my life to shake your hand and talk to you. Im sure you are jammin´ it up with the other jazz-cats in jam-session-heaven!
you are beyond jazz, beyond genre, i am here as a heavy metal musician who grew up on your groove, it lives on in many forms, i am heartbroken to hear about your passing. we love you oscar
this is great when someone can embrace metal and the beauty and greatness of jazz! We need more people like you! i loved oscar peterson too! and i also like two songs on Megadeth's UA, which have great groves, but is political horseshit warmongering on the part of mustaine.
Yeah man! Let's hear it for the great Oscar Peterson, the Tsunami of Swing, that wonderful warm giant of jazz. We'll not see his like again, bless his heart
The 20th Century has produced Sinatra, Elvis, Liberace, Pavarotti, BB King, Count Basie, Oscar Peterson, Louis Armstrong, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, Ella Fitzgerald, and the list goes on. I see not ONE star of the 21st Century that will share their spotlight, nor carry their torch.
Current "artists" rely too much on technology plus attitude and image. Not enough of the human element. They lack the character and substance that giants like Oscar Peterson had.
I urge you check out "Friend of the Night" by Mogwai here on youtube. It is one of the scarce few current artists of good merit in my opinion.
paynow: I agree with you 100%. Today gimmickry passes and sells CD's. Just consider when people rate Jamie Cullum, Diana Krall and Norah Jones as "jazz artists' in the same bracket as Oscar.(?) The media is too quick to force mediocre, immature 'artists' into vacuums left behind by GIANTS like Oscar, Nat Cole,Coltrane,Getz etc. (just my opinion here so i don't mind if i'm given a thumbs down!)
so..true... and MUCH OF THIS IS DUE TO THE DIGITAL REVOLUTION, which is destroying rather than nurturing great artists and the environs in which they are formed..
If your moronic wish "die internet" comes to pass you will no longer be able to see and hear moments of art, culture, diversity and humanity such as this clip presents.
i have thought extensively about this...and if you want a dissertation on why the internet and our soulless cyberculture threatens great artistic and cultural legacies, one can be provided....
Fellman your idea sounds crazy, but its true. We can no longer buy a record, buy a cassette. Almost impossible to buy a CD unless you go to Walmart. Ask Billboard. They count a FEW chain stores plus "digital sales", thats it. In other words, Elvis sold over 2 BILLION RECORDS worldwide. He can never be beat because there ARE NO RECORDS ANYMORE. And artists are NOT getting paid correctly. Those are the facts.
Thanx for your support. We should try to get through to the record companies and youth today. I'm very concerned about the destruction of what i always held very dear- the virulence and vitality and role of art in society.
One of the nicest and most patient guys to ever grace Planet Earth. This man had no ego which is so rare in music these days where so many are overrated just for the sake of it.
i loved oscar, and delighted in the fact that he was very articulate about his craft and his enormous knowledge and respect for the piano as an instrument and the work of his predecessors. But is it a bit naive to think of him as having no ego. After all, despite all his warmth, he did say, "musically, i'm gonna try to run you over." What is undeniable, though, is that he was an amazing soul.
FellmanBaines; Sorry, i tend to judge jazz ego on the grounds of someone like Miles Davis & in comparison Oscar had none to Miles. I live just a few blocks from Oscar and met him on several occasions casually. This is just an ordinary, multi-racial neighborhood although marred with violence. The guy had a warmth & genuineness equivalent to Martin Luther King. I'm not joking..there was something special about Oscar!
i can't believe it.. i guess it's true. I loved Oscar's music..and his character and integrity as an human being... this is a huge loss! I also hate the fact that i'm finding out about it through this SOULLESS TECHNOLOGY WE CALL THE INTERNET! That's not the way the death of a great soul should be communicated. God bless you oscar, and your family and friends.
FellmanBaines; Yes, i suppose all humans have egos. Well, let's say he had less of an ego than alot of those who pass for musicians today. I think with Oscar it was more playful competition. The thing is,there is NO one to replace such a giant as this. But you are so right about the soulless tech we call the internet!
FellmanBaines; There was a spirituality that existed with Oscar..maybe because he was a civil rights fighter. He was multi-dimensional. It's such a shame he had to contend with that
brutal case of racial abuse outside his home in Mississauga last year.(after 80 yrs of fighting hard!) It caused a depression that set him back decades.
@mojoelem -Mississauga is a suburb of Toronto Canada.Oscar was born in Montreal Canada, but has lived in Mississauga for many years.Toronto is the most integrated city on earth, with a policy of zero tolerance for bigotry. We value human rights and most of us here do all in our power to preserve them.
To all Oscar fans, read "The Cult of the Amateur. How today's internet is killing our culture." by Andrew Keen, 2007. Indispensable reading for those who wish to save art and music from the destructive forces of our cyberspace culture. die itunes, die ipod, die youtube, die google.
astiagogo; I'm all for change..if it's change for the BETTER. Unfortunately todays "change' has had mostly negative effects e.g. increased gangs , dope, and a dog-eat-dog attitude that starts when a kid is 2 yrs old. Morals are laughed at !Racial ignorance & intolerance has increased. Even Oscar was racially abused recently. The future doesn't look that good. Social Evolution is supposed to bring better prospects for humans.
FellmanBaines; Actually the worst thing to happen has been Rap 'music' and the stupid negative 'attitude' that goes with it. But as much as i hate it all it's what makes MONEY..and that's what counts sadly in 'society'. Very little is 'positive' in entertainment today. Oscar came from a different era where there existed some sense of decorum.(although there was rife racism).
OP at his best....Mr. Brown, simply stated, best stand-up bass player ever....OK, PaulChambers ...I know, I know. Pettiford too. And Eddie T is wonderful small group drummer......RIP to all these cats.
allthingslucid; You can't be as lucid as you claim. Even Ralph Waldo Emerson played better piano than Keith Emerson! I suppose you think David Bowie plays a meaner saxophone than John Coltrane?
Keith Emerson & Rick Wakeman are the best in Croydon! Even Dudley Moore & Roy Budd were better than those two pretentious, overrated ex-college prats! Oscar could play better than all of them with just ONE hand!
this is a true thing that happens! its not a chain letter! its kinda scary at first but it really works!! paste this message into 3 comments and press ALT F1 and your crushes name will appear on the screen!!! its soo wierd!
There's a story about Art Tatum - a lot of hot pianists were playing for him (oscar was one, bless him) - after they had all finished, Tatum sat down and played a tune called "Little Man,You've Had a Busy Day". bada-bing. But Oscar definitely had it going. WOW!!
Because you have opened this... you will get kissed on the nearest possible Friday by the love of your life... if you don't break the chain. Tomorrow will be the best day of your life. However, if you don't send this to at least 10 people by the stroke of midnight tonight you will be forever cursed in love. Just copy and paste this.. Good Luck!

On YouTube type in Oscar Peterson's Piano Lessons.
Dick Cavett asked him to sing..
A small sample of his great voice that sounded so much( naturally) like Nat King Cole.
His joke was, that Nat heard him and afterwards said,
If you wont sing, I wont play piano."

I believe Oscar made a record singing Nat king Coles songs Google it and see.
He sounded a lot like Nat w/o trying.

What, did the great oscar peterson pass away?
FellmanBaines 4 years ago
he died yesterday.. RIP Oscar.. great musician
pianoman115 4 years ago
FellmanBaines; There was a spirituality that existed with Oscar..maybe because he was a civil rights fighter. He was multi-dimensional. It's such a shame he had to contend with that
brutal case of racial abuse outside his home in Mississauga last year.(after 80 yrs of fighting hard!) It caused a depression that set him back decades.
mojoelem 4 years ago
@mojoelem -Mississauga is a suburb of Toronto Canada.Oscar was born in Montreal Canada, but has lived in Mississauga for many years.Toronto is the most integrated city on earth, with a policy of zero tolerance for bigotry. We value human rights and most of us here do all in our power to preserve them.
paulostroff99 8 months ago
@paulostroff99 Well, you'll have to explain all that to Oscar's family, who were hugely traumatised by it.
Incidentally, i live in Ontario and can tell you, as an ethnic person myself, it isn't that tolerant.
Dream on, my friend.

To all Oscar fans, read "The Cult of the Amateur. How today's internet is killing our culture." by Andrew Keen, 2007. Indispensable reading for those who wish to save art and music from the destructive forces of our cyberspace culture. die itunes, die ipod, die youtube, die google.
Long live Oscar!

If I was a better pianist I would play like Oscar - hear my youtube

If you don't embrace change you can't evolve. Fight the demon from within etc.
Long live the future, R.I.P small mindedness and igronance.
astiagogo 4 years ago
astiagogo; I'm all for change..if it's change for the BETTER. Social Evolution is supposed to bring better prospects for humans.
mojoelem 4 years ago
FellmanBaines; Actually the worst thing to happen has been Rap 'music' and the stupid negative 'attitude' that goes with it. But as much as i hate it all it's what makes MONEY..and that's what counts sadly in 'society'. Very little is 'positive' in entertainment today. Oscar came from a different era where there existed some sense of decorum.(although there was rife racism).

I read this book and yes, everyone who cares about art ought to read it. Its so dead on and truthful. I found it frightening.

Well, hopefully you only think of Ray Brown as both Oscar and Ed are still alive and kickin'

jfunch; Sadly this isn't the case 3 months on.

No, just heard it - sad. He gave us great music both as composer and especially as a musician.

Chuck Norris taught Oscar Peterson how to play piano only Oscar does not use roundhouse kicks to strike the keys like Chuck does.

Is Peterson the last great clasic pianist?
efergarmx 4 years ago
No one does it like this anymore...
longtallsallie08 4 years ago
Ah, no. Keith Emerson is the last great classic pianist!
allthingslucid 4 years ago
allthingslucid; You can't be as lucid as you claim. Even Ralph Waldo Emerson played better piano than Keith Emerson! I suppose you think David Bowie plays a meaner saxophone than John Coltrane?
mojoelem 4 years ago
Keith Emerson & Rick Wakeman are the best in Croydon! Even Dudley Moore & Roy Budd were better than those two pretentious, overrated ex-college prats! Oscar could play better than all of them with just ONE hand!

Good Luck!
