@turntablesrock I guess I shouldn't lose heart, though I plan to wait a good while until i've got a more serious vinyl rig before I knock on Mike's door again. What are you going to do? Nice vinyl rig btw...my rig is currently a Transrotor Fat Bob Plus, SME-5009 arm, Miyajima Shilabe cart & Bladelius Heimdal phono stage. My phono cable is Jorma Origo xlr & tonearm cable is Crystal Micro xlr. I plan to upgrade to a Boulder 1008 phono & Helius tonearm later in the year however.
@melbguy1 I can't say that I've heard any of that in person, but I would love to at some point. I don't really have any real money to invest in my stuff...between my TT and pre I have about $125 invested. I've spent more, but that's the stuff that stayed. As far as I'm concerned, Mikey isn't so much a gear snob as he likes people who are passionate about the hobby, regardless of what gear they might have. I dunno why your comments are being marked as spam and removed...some people are dicks.
@turntablesrock Hi Dave, I really enjoyed your video and admire your passion for music. I guess my thing at the moment is finishing my system, so I can see why Mike would not find a common thread. He's way over components as you said. One day perhaps when I have a big vinyl collection? Btw, if you're on FB, would love to add you as a friend :) Regards, David.
This video pretty much explains my path....I've advanced a lot since I created this though, my best advice is try and find opportunities that give you a chance to mess up a few times where it's non critical. Also, LISTEN.
So, the band you recorded @4:30, sounds just like many high-school band recordings I collect on vinyl from the 50s to the early 80's. Your recording sounds nice, no real close-mic'ing, it sounds like 2 mics only? A possible 3rd room mic? Good job anyways. there seems to be a weird pre clip (like a square shaped noise gate) before each bass hit. Is that the way it was recorded, or is that a digital fault? The band really starts smoking, but the drummer has bad timing in parts. Great hobby eh?
@oatstao read down a bit....I know I used 5 or 6 mics but if I remember correctly, I only really used three that were audible. Any weird digitalness is probably from layers of digital compression from when I did not know how to master audio for YT. It's a high school band, whaddya expect?
@turntablesrock - This video is from back in 2009, and no matter how good the audio was on your video, Youtube's old eq and compression algorithms were terrible. I remember posting videos and when I played them back on Youtube I was wondering where all the compression and digital artifacts came from.
You've owned some really amazing equipment and at 16 you were years ahead of your time. I hope you enjoy your continual trip through audiophile land.
Dude, you need to go with better quality turn tables. Check out the Rega Planar turntables from British company Rega. I got my Rega Planar 3 belt drive, glass platter turntable back in early 80's. I'm still using that turntable today.
The Moody Blues albums I have from those days sound much richer and more textured than the CD's and iTunes download digital formats. Plus there's nothing comparable to the old album art work and liner notes.
I currently have a Lenco L75/Shure V15III and Dual 1229/Audio Technica AT15S in service. ProJect Xpression III/Denon DL-110 that I need to do something with. I want a nice Technics SP series or SL1200mk2/5. With all the expierence I've had with belt drives, I prefer to stay away from them. Also, I'm broke right now, so I think most upgrades will have to be found. I AM, however, working on a decent HT system. I'll make an updated version of this soon. Lotsa new stuff to show off.
@turntablesrock You're off to a good start for a guy you're age. Don't shrug off the belt drives though. Less vibration, quieter. Try a Rega or Systemdek II table with a decent arm and cartridge. The JBL 4311's were a neat find. The album, "Ship Arriving Too Save A Drowning Witch", by Frank Zappa was mixed on a pair of those. Actually, check that album out. Keep it up.
@turntablesrock way to go man! I love it when the younger generation actually get the Analog Sound. The L75 is a superb table as is the 1229 (I have one myself), all it needs is a solid plinth, tonearm rewire, and gimbal bearings and you'll have a world class table for little coin.
@TheSulross Dude, as long as you level out your turntable, it doesn't have extra noise, a good tonearm, and nice maintained cartridge, it's all sugar. If you can source a noise maker in the the chain, that's all that really counts to rectify. Don't get caught up in the objectives... it's what you feel good about that counts.
I'll explain how I did it. I mixed 5 to 8 channels of mics, whether they be hanging or on the floor two two channels of my Teac A3340S running Ampex 457. I mixed stereo off two aux sends of a mackie SR24.4VLZpro. If you understand that, the recording is even more amazing....
Jeez kid, how'd you go through (afford) all of that equipment in such a short period of time?! I'm 47 years old, spent 15 years in radio and only have 800 LPs (some pretty darn cool ones by the way) and a Marantz 2250B, Rega P1 and some Bose 601s I've had since college!!
@stlydan Just this year I've gotten (that I can remember): Denon AVP-5000 Technics RS-1500 Lenco L75 Dual 1229 Tascam M-50 Sherwood/Newcastle SD-871 Crown CX-844 Ampex AG-440B Tascam 122B (and another 122) Sony STR-GA7ES At least 200 or 300 records Will be getting shortly: PS Audio Linear Control Center II preamp PS Audio III Phono Preamp Caimbridge Audio CA540P MM phono stage and probably a lot more that I am forgetting.
Cool Story Bro, Im 29, have a couple hundred records, Project- RPM 4 w/Denon 110 cart -- > Hagermann Bugle Phono Kit with custom parts, Vishay Z-foil resistors, Metal LM4562 and AD797brz opamps, a Technics 1506 R2R, Teac 3340S, Teac A4300sx, and about 80 tapes, .a Pair of modded Forte 2's with crites ti tweets and his midrange diaphragms, Academy Center, two pair of smaller Quartets, and SVS PB12 Plus 2 sub for a killer 7.1 system .... no hand me downs, movies, music and gaming is epic
I still have my JVC turntable with Ortophon cartridge hooked up to an Onkyo Integra preamp/amp system. It is still enjoyable to spin records. Still own records from my teen years.
Didn't you notice the 60hz hum at the beginning? For an audiophile or recording engineer I would think you would have fixed that. Or was that intentional? Also, check out some of my videos, I have some recordings of songs that I like with a couple of my turntables.
@codic3s That was on the cassette originally. I did that dub from the 78 a few years ago, and the arm on the Russco CueMaster has since failed. I also applied a ton of DNR to make the recording sound passable, probably too much. Had I had a working 78 system at the time, I would have re-done the dub.
Dude, you got it BAD! I started almost 30 years ago and I can tell you, it doesn't get better. My love for audio launched a 25 year career in radio and now I'm rediscovering analog all over again after riding the digital wave. :) JC
I went to many phases as well. I played with gear since I was eight. My dad introduce me to the microphone and reel to reel when I was three. I currently use my Onkyo Integra Preamp and Amp (from Hong Kong), JVC turntable, Nakamichi Cassette, Teac Reel to Reel, Phillips CDR, which is for my listening to music through a pair of Polk Audio towers. I own records and tapes and reels. I still enjoy them. Enjoyed your video.
I never had a voice coach, so I am not too sure how to dictate correctly...I also spliced the thing together from multiple takes of the script that I wrote, and that could just be a splice....
Too bad I got banned off audiokarma by that motherfucking asshole tentoze... sure he has some power on a website, but in real life I'm sure he's at the bottom of the ladder.
tentoze really is the hugest asshole I've ever come across on the internet.
