"Someday? Someday my dream will come? One night you will wake
up and discover it never happened. Its all turned around on you. It never will. Suddenly you are old. Didnt happen, and it never will"
^ Story of 90% of everyone's life, the difference is some people are ok with it and carry on, and others pretend they are better when in reality they are no different.
I find Vincents opinion on life and human existence in general extremely interesting. Its so nihilistic. Hes like "Fuck everything". Just do what you want to do. You wont change the entire entity of things and the universe if you kill persons. Of course its morally reprehensible, but there is nobody to judge you. God doesnt exist. I think persons with this kinda attitude are so unpredictable and scary.
scenes like this made this movie great - the dialogue between Vincent and Max was so suprisingly good and Mann's use of night time, almost grainy in its look, is terrific.
and that bit at the end. just replace "driving a cab" with anything. everyone here could probably find something in their life that they're using as an excuse not to move forward.
Notice how the car didn't explode into a 50 foot fireball. That is very realistic, and again proves that this is a great movie. Car's rarely burst into huge fireballs, because the gas tank can withstand a lot of impact, and there isn't anything to ignite it. My cousin slid upside at 70mph with his truck's gas tank ruptured pouring gas on his head, and it never caught fire. :)
I love how both of these guys psychoanalyze each other successfully in this scene, just the blunt truths
When Max brings up Vincent being institutionalized, 1, he probably was in an institution, & 2 maybe Vincent didn't always have his sociopath personality, the whole nature vs nurture debate: maybe he was always this way, or something changed him into it.
Amazing film.
Also, can someone explain the Sigmund Freud meets Dr. Ruth comment? what that means?
@crb396776 The Sigmund Freud meets Dr. Ruth comment was said because after Max Psychoanaylised Vincent he asked him., "And why haven't you killed me yet?"
Vincent did like Max for some reason. Not sure if he would have let him lived after his hits. I think the chance would have been 50-50.
No we would've killed Max. During the movie the cop mentions that a mysterious killer did a series of hits and killed a cab driver a while back. It's the scene where they are investigating the 1st murder.
Whenever I feel bad about life or that things never seem to go my way, I remember to watch this. You make your own breaks in life. Go out and get what you want. You don't have time to feel bad about yourself.
@JorgeEFM what are you talking about ? if your talking about this movie why would you waste your time watching videos of it if you dont like the movie?lol
Not enough patience? What, are you used to movies with no thought, only back to back action and cliche jokes? Guess what, there's more to a good movie than those things. Collateral is brilliance and if you can't appreciate it, that's really too bad.
@JorgeEFM Jorge I'm a film student and studying film for college and I have to say that you are absolutely wrong on this subject, you must have extreme form of ADD to not have the patience to watch this movie because to be honest this is an awesomely well written story with great lighting and effects to match, go out and make a movie if you think that it sucks that's better than this because I can assure you that you'd never be able to make something half this good.
fantastic scene. vincent the cold blooded killer shows pain when max said that vincent was emotionally scarred but it is no excuse to be hired killer.
These cab talks were the best parts of the movie and the most important. They demonstrated the true themes. Vincent sits in judgment of Max, picking apart his whole existence and questioning his life, but isn't ready to deal with someone willing to push back and he starts to care what Max thinks of him. Meanwhile, Max, feeling he's going to be killed anyway, actually figures out Vincent on a much deeper level than Vince ever figures him. He evolves, Vincent doesn't.
Mann movies always have the grey on white suit combo. Also, this movie begins at the airport and ends on the subway. Heat had an airport ending with a begin on the sub. Note this Mann fans.

The writer of this scene is a true genius, vincent is this messed up asshole who knows right and wrong he just doesn't see the use of it, when he kills the jazz musician is where he shows some heart, the look on his face says " im an asshole for having done this"

Look at the interior vs. exterior shots when Max speeds up. Interior, they're going about 20 mph in a straight line but exterior they're doing 50 plus and swerving all over the street. Jamie Foxx even does the classic 80s TV show trick of "driving" the car by jerking the steering wheel back and forth the whole time.

man i wish that scene was like 15 seconds longer to show when tom cruise goes "well that was great" and starts poking jamie fox with a piece of the taxi really hard. i laughed my ass off when i first saw that
Max points out of the flaw of critical nihilism. If life is so meaningless and we are so insignificant compared to the cosmic scheme of things, then why does it matter to Vince what Max does with his life? He has no right or position to judge Max in any way.
You make a good point there, but in a way, they're both judging each other unfairly. Max looks at Vincent and says, 'professional killer? What kind of moral existence is that? What kind of way is that to make a living?' and Vincent is like, 'it's the only one I know, but look at yourself. You have the ability and the luxury to do things that don't involve gettin' blood on your hands. You can live clean and be successful if you want it...but you won't take the risk.'
@323guiltyspark You've missed the point. It does not matter to Vincent. Vincent was going to kill him anyway. It was a sort of pillow talk to keep Max' mind from thinking about doing anything - numbing him with argument.
the first 4 minutes of this clip rank very high on the list as the best dialogue ever written then performed. Great music, great directing...amazing scene.
@973JJJ It's not because he shocked by what he said, it's because of the shocking realization of what he himself Max has failed to do in life is hitting him like a ton of bricks and that is a hard thing for "any" man to face when you are a just a little bit past your prime.
love the image vince describes max, if you see the world like that, nothing matters anway, its all dark and all shit, so why shouldnt i just kill myself and drives in other cab, this scene has so much to say, real fucking awesome
Great writing and summary of the dichotemy we all face from within: interpreting life's value/meaning vs. life being meaningless. Vincent made the parallel that he was no different than than a person living a life of just "going through the motions" and not fullfilling their purpose thus killing that life. His point was that we all are murders (meaning killing a life) just like a paid assasin if we BS ourselves and loose perspective on life and live like zombies going through the motions.
I never cry over a film, ever. I never really cried at all. But the scene with the coyote going infront of the car ... man, wtf? I just started feeling upset. It was wierd, I mean I only really cried when a relative died and thats about it. Some things that happen are beyond my understanding. I wasn't stoned either.
This is amazing... the turning point for the movie. MAx has been so amazed, intimitated, and frightened by Vincent because he seemed to be superhuman... but he's just damaged goods.
This is an extremely well made film, and is Tom Cruise's best movie to date. This is one of the best scenes, with the exchange of harsh home-truths between Max and Vincent. One of those twists of action where the business-like assassin of Vincent is suddenly caught out by Max burying his foot on the pedal and taking the control away from Vincent. A thoroughly impressive film in every way, this was a refreshingly different role for Cruise, and it absolutely worked 100%.
@PennyWisee14 frustration. vincent is a poster child sociopath, and sociopaths are driven by motivations to win and or control situations. so to him he felt as if he was losing a game and was trying to figure out what to say to get the situation under control again.
This scene always gives me chills. Vincent's empty eyes, the drowned-out sound of the passing traffic, and the score. This scene is the best, but the whole movie is just so sublime. Thank you for uploading this - next time someone tells me either Jamie Foxx or Tom Cruise is a bad actor, I'll bring this up.
@AlcoholicSemenStain No, they did not. They both escaped from the car, badly injured.Vincent had run away after he heard police sirene, and Max (the cab driver) stayed with his car.The cop who came had found a body in the trunk of his car and plead Max guilty, but had tied the cop and run away.Vincent got into the building where Max´ love interest was staying, he wanted to kill her.Max came just in time and shot Vincent in ear.Vincent then followed them into the subway, where Max shot him 2 death.
This is pure masterpiece of Drama/Thriller genre. I like Tom Cruise but never found his acting versatile. In this film he showed brilliant/phenomenal acting. Real Tom Cruise.
Jamie Foxx, Jada Pinkett Smith and Mark Ruffalo were great too. I don't know why but this movie reminds me a little bit "The Brave One" with Jodie Foster. Final scenes were intriguing and just awesome
be and the only way to do that is believing in yourself. So keep the faith everyone and go for your dreams. We only live once. But in this scene also, sometimes people tell you the honest truth when you hit a button in them and they underestimate you. That is why i live by a golden rule " Never underestimate a person " Cus when you push em too far you see what happens....
This scene is great for the fact that even though Tom Cruise ( should have been nominated for a Oscar for this role by the way ) is a hit man, does not mean he does not have any intelligence on life and what he said to Jamie was the brutal honest truth. Because Jamie`s character is alot of people i see. Including how i used to be. Too afraid to try things cus you dont want to fail and that is why we sometimes as people do other things cus we live in fear too much. We can be anything we want to
This scene is so good in that it seems its like two old friends bashing each other and hurting each others feelings in some strange alternate reality kind of way.
What truly makes scenes like this in the movie great is that you can stop right here and be satisfied. This could have been the ending and it still would have been awesome.
I absolutely love this movie. When I first watched it a few years back it was one of those eye-opening experiences that definitely had a profound impact on how I view and behave on a day to day basis. One of Cruise's finest performances.
lol i love how after spending a night with eachother they can sit in a car and exchange childish insults, kinda funny, likea sibling rivelry kinda thing
I can never quite decide if Vincent is saying that he hasn't killed Max because he sees ability in him and wants him to use it, or if he hasn't because Max is already killing himself with his choices ("Don't you talk to me about murder") and therefore, is no threat. Either way, he's totally unprepared for the reaction, which also completely justifies Max's point, that he has no idea what's going on in someone else's head.
@thedonga838 huh.... well i have to say at first i didn't give this flick that much thought when i first saw it. i was going through a difficult period in my life when everything just "sucked". watching it now... its a great film... overall.... "Possibly the best film ever made"? I have to disagree only because... there are a lot of great movies out there.
@thedonga838 This was a great film, no doubt, but the best film ever made? Jesus, dude, I can think of a dozen off the top of my head better than this.
Just say "I enjoyed this more than any other film ever". I've done that- enjoyed an excellent film more than any other film ('the Professional', aka 'Leon'), that I recognize as a great film, but I know it wasn't the best one ever made.
That's Collateral: a hell of a script, a hell of a couple actors (Cruise was better, tho), that's all.
@menckencynic Who are you to say what's the best film or not? In his opinion it's apparently the best film ever, so what? Do I personally agree it's the greatest film ever? No. But that's my own opinion. Don't try to justify yourself claiming your opinion is the right one. Saying a film is "the greatest ever" is strictly subjective. There's no right or wrong opinion. Stick with your own and don't criticize others.
@menckencynic There's the point right there... you're arguing with that guy about what's a great film and what's not, when it's clearly subjective. I'm not saying I agree or disagree with you, i have my own opinions on the film, but I certainly don't criticize or try to ague with others about their opinion on the movie.
And no, I'm not arguing with you about YOUR opinion on this film, I'm simply stating don't criticize others for their opinion.
tom cruise sayd some shit that was so real it convinced jamie fox to crash on purpose

What do you think is goin thru vincents mind at 4:36
PennyWisee14 1 year ago
@PennyWisee14 frustration. vincent is a poster child sociopath, and sociopaths are driven by motivations to win and or control situations. so to him he felt as if he was losing a game and was trying to figure out what to say to get the situation under control again.

This scene always gives me chills. Vincent's empty eyes, the drowned-out sound of the passing traffic, and the score. This scene is the best, but the whole movie is just so sublime. Thank you for uploading this - next time someone tells me either Jamie Foxx or Tom Cruise is a bad actor, I'll bring this up.

They both died
AlcoholicSemenStain 1 year ago

For me one of the best (if not THE best) movie I've ever seen!
No other film had such an emotional impact and this is the best scene of this masterpiece.
Thanks for sharing!

be and the only way to do that is believing in yourself. So keep the faith everyone and go for your dreams. We only live once. But in this scene also, sometimes people tell you the honest truth when you hit a button in them and they underestimate you. That is why i live by a golden rule " Never underestimate a person " Cus when you push em too far you see what happens....
PryorRip 1 year ago
This scene is great for the fact that even though Tom Cruise ( should have been nominated for a Oscar for this role by the way ) is a hit man, does not mean he does not have any intelligence on life and what he said to Jamie was the brutal honest truth. Because Jamie`s character is alot of people i see. Including how i used to be. Too afraid to try things cus you dont want to fail and that is why we sometimes as people do other things cus we live in fear too much. We can be anything we want to

Best scene of whole movie. By far.

This scene is so good in that it seems its like two old friends bashing each other and hurting each others feelings in some strange alternate reality kind of way.

What truly makes scenes like this in the movie great is that you can stop right here and be satisfied. This could have been the ending and it still would have been awesome.

People who say Tom Cruise is a bad actor are completely clueless sheep. This is a masterful performance by both actors in the scene.

Brilliant dialogue, and brilliant filming.

That's Collateral: a hell of a script, a hell of a couple actors (Cruise was better, tho), that's all.
menckencynic 1 year ago
@menckencynic Who are you to say what's the best film or not? In his opinion it's apparently the best film ever, so what? Do I personally agree it's the greatest film ever? No. But that's my own opinion. Don't try to justify yourself claiming your opinion is the right one. Saying a film is "the greatest ever" is strictly subjective. There's no right or wrong opinion. Stick with your own and don't criticize others.
cb9603 1 year ago
@cb9603 I don't get you problem then- so you agree with me, but dispute my right to argue it?
menckencynic 1 year ago
@menckencynic There's the point right there... you're arguing with that guy about what's a great film and what's not, when it's clearly subjective. I'm not saying I agree or disagree with you, i have my own opinions on the film, but I certainly don't criticize or try to ague with others about their opinion on the movie.
And no, I'm not arguing with you about YOUR opinion on this film, I'm simply stating don't criticize others for their opinion.
