The emperor made the call to surrender. It was the first time in Japan's history they were taken over by a foreign power. It was part of the surrender terms that the emperor could not be put on trial. The reason the allies went with this is because of the loss of life on Okinawa. They predicted over 14 million people would die on both sides if they invaded the mainland. The Japanese were training children down to 13 to fight with pikes It would have been mass slaughter.
Hirohito was a figurehead of Japan, he had little to no actual political power. The majority of the power rested in Hideki Tojo's hands. True, Hirohito supported Japanese expansion but he had no say in anything really.
A shame that Yamamoto could not have attended. He was an honorable enemy...but needed to be assassinated since he was determined to be worth "at least four aircraft carriers."
@SCE2AUX They actually should've hung Yamamoto by his nuts along with the rest of those Jap officers for all their war crimes and atrocities done to civilians and POWs. Worth 4 aircraft carriers?? How about 4 bullets in his head?
@lycfmtkl Yeah MacAurther wanted it that way because Hirohito had such strong power and influence on the people still, and he was being cooperative with the Allies in the surrender.
Can you imagine a whole country like Japan starting a big insurgency?? Geez, that could've waged on for another 10 yrs!! especially as prideful of a country as Japan was. MacAurther was smart by keeping him alive and using him as a tool to help rebuilt a new Japan.
all the people who died because of Japan and Germany..just for them to eventually surrender..the should round up all the leaders of both countries and shoot them
The thing you must remember is that Emperor Hirohito was only a child when the war started, not to mention a figurehead. After the nukes of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, he finally had Tojo declared a traitor and imprisoned him along with any of his minister's that supported Tojo's actions. In Germany, SS Officers were indeed round up and Hitler supposedly committed suicide. In the case of Tojo ((Who committed suicide in prison)), justice was served.
Yeah, Hirohito really had nothing to do with it. Tojo, if I remember right, actually placed himself better than the Emperor, as such, Hirohito had nothing to do with it.
What a humiliation!

Emperor Hirohito was already an adult when Japan invaded China.
He was actually the chief commander of Japan at that time who caused War World II in Asia.
He is actually a war criminal. But America allowed him to be the Emperor of Japan until he died in 1988.
