omg that part with the romantic music and "you may want to watch...they can be very beautiful" cracked me up xD wow i hope i get good crystals like that tomorrow...
why do u heat every shit up? so unnecessary. most stuff decomposes on heating, esp with impuritys inside the sample. just add fucking hexane and dcm, evaporate the dmc, so the solution gets less polar, when its cloudy enuff u freeze the shit and bam here u go, massive crystals. wash it with hexane and u win. works almost every time.
won't seeding create an impurity in the solution, and therefore create impure crystals? I thought the point to recrystalization was to extract PURE crystals
basically no. while your seed crystal might be slightly impure - the bulk of the material wont contain the impurity. When compounds crystallize it is a sign of high purity
Somewhat true, but inaccurate, if the process is performed incorrectly, or the original crystals formed in less than ideal conditiona, a number of things can occur, for instance impurities can become encapsulated within the crystals.
The technique demonstrated in the video is REcrystallization, obviously had the original crystals been "high purity" purification through recrystallization would serve no purpose.
Perhaps crystallization is a sign of at least relatively fair purity.
