How does a male cockatoo get cloacal prolapse? Did it have something to do with his prior home, such as malnutrition or something? Or was he plucking at the vent area? Or did this just happen for no apparent reason?

Birds only have one 'hole' that functions for reproduction and excrement - it is often referred
to as the vent area or cloaca. The cloaca falls out
partially when the sphincter muscles or 'vent' is
loose. This is a somewhat common problem seen
in the cockatoo species and often seen in female parrots that are producing too many eggs. I could
go into more detail - but I'm sure that would
bore you, lol. Lou's prolapse has been pretty
severe and therefore has been difficult to fix.
