pretty cool man .... Admittedly I am not familiar with the application of the Guaguanco or the music that groove is used in , but I liked the slowest version the best
Hi! Thank you all for checking out this video! It is so old! I can't believe it has so many views! Please follow and subscribe my new channel! I have some cool stuff up! I will be updating a newer version of this video as well as new videos! Thanks!
Latin drumming tends to "blend" triplets with a "lazy" 16th note syncopated feel. Just like a guitar bending that intentionally doesn't reach the note. It's about the personality of the drummer and the musical genre. How much can a flam be "opened" before it sound like a mistake...?
haha, everyone plays the drums but! when this guy lays it down you people have no idea what his doing, and you say he sounds shit and messy etc, learn the instrument and the different times before you talk.
I agree with you and in no way am i saying this isn't good but, as many drummers say, you can play the most complicated time signatures and patterns but they wont always sound good. For the technical part this is outstanding but for the sound... well certain parts i wouldn't play it on stage.
i agree the guaguanco needs to just have a good feel and sound smooth on drums and be an infectious dance beat, not be all techincal. but what the hell do i know im czech not cuban.
Very nice syncopated groove. I'm still working on latin stuff because my band director likes to have latin in our jazz band set. Are you just playing sixteenth patterns around the kit with your hands, or is there some kind of indepence thing going?
hey! Thanks! I kindof modeled this pattern after a guaguanco/comparsa idea I had in my head... it is a kindof independence thing.... This is a very specific groove though I wouldn't use it except for very specific ocassions...
Thanks man! Just an audix Mic pack.... D2 for toms, D4 for floor tom... Shure SM57 for snare drum, D6 for the kick drum, And Rodes NT5 overhead stereo pair... I just got a YAMAHA suckick and it is SWEET! I'm running all thorugh a DIGIMAX 96 k presonus preamp...
OK the pattern should stay simple, if your going to play it it, you need to accent on the toms, your left leg should be the clave bell instead. it sounds way to broken, and It wont fit in to your latin groove!! keep it simpler!
Thanks for checking out my videos, man! Thank you for the compliments! I hope to see more of some latin explanations/demos from you...and any gig stuff...I look forward to all of it! Be well man!
Man, you are a great drummer. Where did you learn? In school, on the stand, with a master instructor? I play drums as well...more jazz, fusion, and rock...I'm trying to get into latin...Antonio Sanchez, Dafnis Prieto...any other modern guys that you'd recommend? Man, check out my videos if you like...be well, keep playing!
Thanks bro!! I learned mostly by playing by ear with records and reading books... I now am studying in a University but it all really boils down to analyzing music and books... and of course a lot of practice... Dude I LOVE Antonio Sanchez and Dafnis.... They're insaneee.... Those are my two fave drummers right there... on the latin jazz side... You should check out jimmy branly too.. I think they have him on drummerworld... I'll check out your videos and give u a holler!!
Wow...makes my latin jazz clips seem a little stiff! I love the swung latin vibe...El Negro blows me up when he does that stuff. I would do it more too, except I play a lot with white guys who don't understand true latin music. ;)
dont worry dude!!! Just listen to a lot of music!!!! and try to copy the feel.... every feel is attainable it is just a matter of how much are you involved in it!! you know what has helped me... playing timbales! even tough its only hand focused.. it really helps the feel for latin stuff! Let me know when u post some videos so I can see them!
So, when playing Latin stuff like this on the kit, should a drummer strive to make the rhythms sort of "imperfect" and oblong? I ask because I've noticed that most Latin drummers (for lack of a better term) play their rhythms in such a way that it's almost hard to tell what they are.
Well in a sense yeah its kindof like when you play straightahead jazz... it has a swing to it...with the latin stuff, if you play any latin pattern stickcing to a very strict straight eight note pulse you will find out it doesn't FEEL good... don't play them imperfectly just try to play it until it grooves in it's setting to the point it feels right and swings...it's all about the feel... everything else is secondary...
That is called "syncopated" rhythm, and even then, that "imperfection" is what actually gives the latin rhythm its distinctive sound, in english "groove" in spanish, "sabor".
Thats more like New Wave songo.... Like what Changuito would come-up with if he were our age today. Guaguanco is always going to be better tasted on tumbas my friend, much respect though my friend. God Bless!!!
sounds like a bunch of fucking noise to me hahaha
