  • i love it when games use the score system as a part of the game, getting a 1up (to use a classic game term) at 500,000 gives you a incentive to rack up as many points as possible. i find myself dodging gold stars, diamonds, and other stuff in games where score is a "look i got a first place on the, i dont give a crap leader board"

  • thiss hould be port to XBOX LIVE OR PSN

  • Im going to have to buy this game now.

  • ha this game's in the storage, my sega saturn got donated to the less fortunate.. guess who's less fortunate now lol

  • Another awesome shooter is Alltynex Second on the PC if you like bullet hellfire shooters. The original Alltynex for the FM Towns is really good too. I love this game and one that should be in everyone's Sega Saturn collection.

  • JUST GOT MY COPY TODAY ^^

  • Indy 500 simile for the win!

  • Anyone else come here after Part 2?

  • This game actually has 3 aliases, Layer Section, RayForce, and Gunlock. Looks like someone didn't research hard enough :P

and yes, M.U.S.H.A. is one of the best shooters of all time, and has a soundtrack as good if not better than the Thunder Force games.

  • "Music's nothing to brag about"? Wow you have no taste in Shooter Music. Especially if you love MUSHA so much!

  • @LazyScoutJace retard........ MUSHA IS FUCKING AWSOME

  • @LazyScoutJace whatever the name, it was/is a great shooter game.

  • Why did you review both Layer Section and Galactic attack if they are the same game?

  • I think I like Galactic Attack more than Raystorm (Arcade / PSX) which is basically the same exact game, but just in 3D.

  • @KingDavid73 er, I guess Raystorm is the sequel... isn't it? durrr.. anyway, I like this one more.

  • What do you mean? The music is awesome! I remember going to a friend's house and playing this game every day. The music sets this game apart nicely.

  • @Adropacrich2 But NOWHERE as expensive!

  • @Ken10Ethan8

It's worth having the game but yeah it's absurdly expensive. This game then is a more sensible option

  • I love you f5 button!

  • Protip: Play the PS1 version (titled Raystorm and RayCrisis).

  • I don't like this game for some reason, and I got it back when it came out...

It was already really hard, you have super hax skills.

  • Muppets + Laserguns = WIN

  • I love these classic shooters. Most of them are more fun than some of the newer big budget games.

  • Looks a bit like a spaceship version of Panzer Dragoon Zwei

  • @VWLPT hey you ever play omega boost..that game reminds me of panzer dragoo to

  • your shooter skills are high Jedi Master!

  • I remember playing this 2 player with my brother. This was was just awesome...but If I remember really hard cuz I don't think I ever made it past the second level lol.

  • one of my favorite shooters i love the lock on attack

  • The graphics are very clever for a 2D game, and I like the Dragon Spirit-style bombing mixed with Panzer Dragoon's lock-on lazer feature.

Shame its setting isn't much more imaginative than a mere Macross "space fleet" scenario.

  • This game should have had it's original title. In Japan, the game was originally called RayForce, but was renamed Layer Section due to problems with the trademark. When brought overseas, the game's name changed to Gunlock, and then for no apparent reason, when it came out on Saturn, they named it Galactic Attack, but I believe the Japanese version retained the Layer Section name. The problem here is the game had two successful sequels: RayStorm and RayCrisis.

  • Ironically, the original game's only console release was on Sega Saturn, whereas the sequels were only released on Sony Playstation.

  • コメ率高すぎw

    ここの外人さんは実機、DL購入でPLAYしたのかな?

    神ゲー制作者に還元されるといいな。

  • FUCK YES THIS GAME! Oh god i never beat it, but holy shit this game is awesome. I miss this music too! So fucking kickass!

  • Legendary game.. Loved it and must have played it a billion times.

  • I had this game. Good shmup, not quite great though. Awesome if you can find cheap or better than that, free!

  • I picked this up in MINT condition (case and all) for a wopping $2 on ebay. I've been playing it all day and it is an absolutely fantastic title for Sega Saturn. If you're looking for a good SHMUP or just a good saturn game in general this definitely comes HIGHLY recommended. You can get it extremely cheap too!

  • It's also called Gunlock in european arcades ;) And this game is awesome, played it a lot on my Saturn back in the day.

  • Now these are my type of games. Screw modern warfare and its shitty 7 hour single player campaign.

If I pay money for a game I want some fucking game in the game.

  • ahaha I hear ya!

  • yeah, I like xbox live and all but I hate how they don't focuse much on cmpaign anymore. HOWEVER you should look up ArmA/ArmA2 if you want a long campaign (Honestly though they have a mission editor which I believe is better)

  • this game looks tight! gonna buy it now.

  • If it wasnt for the fact that i got this game in a random 12 game lot off of ebay, i would have never even have givin this one a chance. The box art sucked, it had a generic name and it had "acclaim" written on it so it looked like total shit. BUT apon playing it, i have realized this is a fantastic game and a true hidden gem! thanks for the review! looks can be deciving!

  • Ooh! ooh! Did y'all catch the foreshadowing at about 5:15 when Mark lets drop that he recently picked up a copy of DoDonPachi?

Perhaps a CGRHD review of that crazy, yet classic bullet hell shooter is in the works? Say word.

  • Radiant Silvergun $200??? That's just crazy!

  • Occasionally you can find the game for $100, if that makes it any less crazy.

  • Haha, if your international buyer, the game can go for even more. I've seen in box copies of Panzer Dragoon Saga go fetch about 400+ on ebay. My copy cost me 264.99 excactly.

  • @AfroedNinja - It's because it is one of the best 2D shooters on the Saturn, the demand is high

  • looks like a rip off of radien

  • By that logic, Sonic is a rip-off of Mario.

  • weird it has the lock-on system of 3d shmups...

  • Just got a copy the other day on Ebay for $11. Can't wait to play it.

  • Tasty. Do want.

  • nice

  • i have this emulated.

  • I have this coming my way in the mail, cant wait!

  • What emulator and how well is it emulated?

  • 1. Sega Saturn

    2. perfectly

  • Haha, very funny smartass. I actually do have a Saturn and was just curious about the quality of the emulation.

  • Well try it and see it for yourself. He's not emulating the game.

  • I was replying to marcusnns' comment, not asking what emu mark used. Also, I don't want to DL a 400MB disc image just to see how well it'd play on an emulator. If I was going to DL a disc image, I'd play the game on a modded console.

  • try ssf, it's a great emulator.

  • HELLLLLSSSS YEAAAHHH!!!!

JUSTICE HAS BEEN SERVED finally reviewed! thanks cgr, i can now die a bit happier

  • Looks like an Atari Jaguar game.

  • shmups = shoot um ups

  • i wish i have a lot of shmup games on my sega saturn

  • you can get these online for free. If your Saturn is modchipped you can play these games off of CD-R's.

  • and where can i modchip my sega saturn

  • wat are shmups?

  • It's an abbreviation of SHoot eM UPS

  • Reminds me a bit of Axelay for the SNES

  • Lol, this game is ridiculusly hard, even for a shmup. Still not bad though.

  • Imho one of the most underrated shmups. Very great game, very great review.

  • alway's enjoy these kind of games..

  • I hope he reviews DoDonPachi soon!

  • I thought this game was called "Gunlock" as well.

  • I remember a PS1 game that looks like this game..

It is 3d... The whole target with the laser, same enemies... except you start off in earth..

    I dont remember that game...

    *checked on wiki*

    ITS RAYSTORM!!!!

  • ... and then having it explode. You're funny, but looks aren't everything. haha

  • i like ur voice!

  • yayayayayay

  • it looks easy =/

  • This game's like a completely emulated version of the arcade game!

  • There's a bit of a story behind the name of this Taito shooter.

Originally, it was called RayForce in Japanese arcades. However, with copyright issues over the name, it was retitled Layer Section for the home console ports.

When it reached American shores, the Arcade release was still called RayForce, but Acclaim bought the rights to make a home console version and renamed it Galactic Attack.

THEN when it reached Europe, it got renamed yet again, becoming Gunlock.

  • But to throw a sixth spanner in the works, the home console port was called RayForce.

So now we have RayForce, Layer Section, Rayforce, Galactic Attack, GunLock and RayForce.

I don't really want to know what everyone was thinking, but they probably all had a good laugh at the general public's expense.

  • it looks good

  • Looks great! I like the idea with ground and aerial attacks of controlled ship. But Saturn could do more with 2D graphics. :-/

  • Great game and great review! I've had this since new and the sequels, Raystorm and Raycrisis IMO, didn't match up

  • This looks excellent!

And I know excellent, I was just watching the Pilot Television movie Episode of Flash Gordon!

  • This looks awesome. It needs a re-release!

  • on the vectrax

  • This game looks really good.

  • great shmup game, i'll expect a review for Raystorm HD when it comes on Xbox Live Arcade

  • Nice shooter. I wish they'd made

    more for Dreamcast.

Does anyone know if a Saturn

    Emulator for Dreamcast exists?

  • i dunno about dc but there is one pc.

  • Looks great. I really like the graphics and sprite work too.

  • review some star wars games pls

  • This shooter loks great. I love the lock on feature it has for deestroying ground enemies.

  • No HUD?

  • He said at about 4 minutes that he turned it off as it got in the way of the action.

  • great review, i need to get myself sega saturn and copy of this game!

  • I can't stop thinking about Omega Boost when watching this review

  • omega boost, raystorm and rayforce damn they all awesome

  • The ground lock-on system is awesome, but the game seems a bit cramped.

  • This game also came out for the PC.

  • Is Pt 2 up yet?

  • the sounds effects are awesome

  • When you play this game in vertical screen mode (monitor must be turned on it's side) there are a few additional effects here and there that don't show up in the normal mode.

  • Man this game looks bloody nice!

  • he keeps bringing more reviews.

  • good!

  • I so wish this was for the Mega Drive. Guess i need to look up a Saturn.

    Thanks for the vid!

  • PLAYING RADIANT SILVERGUN NOW!!!!!!

  • This game looks awesome. I need to get a new saturn.

  • i noticed he's been doing a lot of shmups lately

  • This, Darius Gaiden, and In the Hunt were the only Saturn shmups released in the US. Fortunately they're all pretty good and cheap, but so many great ones were left in Japan.

  • Great as allways mark.

  • Your videos are awesome for the commentary but what really sets you apart is the longer continuous gameplay segments instead of quick, short cuts of gameplay like gamespot or gametrailers reviews.

  • WOw, it looks pretty good, great review dude!

  • love the title for this game

  • Cool game, although its sequel, RayStorm, is freaking BEAUTIFUL with its quasi-3D polygon environments -- one of the best looking shmups ever. Very tough. Elegant soundtrack too. Go RayStorm!

  • ahh a saturn shooter, most excellent

  • Dude, you should be on G4 tv!!!

  • when are we getting part 2 of Gradius??

    part 1 was months ago!!

  • Alright! Classic Game Room HD reviews another Sega Saturn Shooter!

  • hey i got this game! :D

  • rayforce machine ate so many of my quarters ;.;

  • I think I might have to give this game a burn! *Hugs modded Saturn*

  • Please Review Dodonpachi that game was fucking AWESOME

  • I love these type of games.

  • this is a very neat looking SHMUP.

  • Thanks for reviewing this gem. Truly one of the best shmups on the Saturn. It's incredible this game doesn't cost more than it does. The music haunts me in my sleep and my wife loathes the game with a passion - when I start it up she knows I will be gone for hours.

  • PSX pseudo sequel Raystorm will be on the PSN and XBLA soon (in Japan)

    /watch?v=X84iB-zIcCw

  • looks fantastic! makes me want to buy a Saturn, but i already have teh Dreamcast.

  • I actually like the Saturn more. Did you know the Saturn has a modem? It still works and all 5 of the games that supported it still work as long as you'e got an analog phone line. Duke Nukem 3d, Virtual On and Saturn Bomberman online are all amazing! Check my channel for the Netlink videos if you're curious!

  • I had this game, it was a great game. This should be DLC for 360 or PSN

  • CGR fact : GALACTIC ATTACK is also

    none as Gunlock :)

  • the music in that game is awesome, remembered me of old games like soul blazer or the first harvest moon, good ol' snes times

  • This game does definitely show evidence of the Saturn's excellent 2-D capabilities.

While I personally dislike 2-D in today's games, it's nice to have some high-quality 2-D visuals on older gaming systems such as the Saturn.

  • I bought this game not long ago and boy am i happy to see Classical Game Room did a video about this awsome Shmup.

  • Great game. Thanks for the review

  • Aha! The reviews are getting better and better! Galactic Attack is a great (let me repeat) G R E A T game!

If you are a fan of shmups, you really to add this game to you library!

Can't wait to watch the 2nd part!

  • My kind of game =)

  • I use to have that game. I was a lot of fun.

  • looks alot like raiden.

  • Raiden + Xevious?

  • yeah pretty much ... but i do adore this game so much I declared to youtube here I would finish ... no matter how many times i would have my victory snatched away by the last boss. lol

    Aberran

  • this is one of the coolest sega games ever i love it

  • Holy cow it's the prequel to Raystorm and Raycrisis! Hell yes that's awesome!

  • Siter Skain's Kamui is a PC doujin shooter that closly follows the same gameplay mechanics of layer section.

Every shooter gamer should check atleast the demo out as its one of the best doujin shooters there is

  • Looks like an awesome shooter!

  • There's too much dead time in the 2 part reviews. I like just one video per game better.

  • he does it because he has alot of good footage

  • looks like another game to add to my (lousy) Saturn collection!

  • we are on the same gameing clock lol..i just got this

  • i like the ps3s namco museum

can you please do that review?

  • I suggest CGR should review other Sega Saturn games like Shining Force III, as well as the Lunar games.

  • I like how u think. I have 2 check if he has done one 4 Dragon Force.

  • Yea I know but all of the other ones he made played and worked right away.

  • First of all I love your videos. But this one does not currently support iPhone/iPod touch can you fix that please.

  • If you're just talking about this one in particular that'd be because it was just uploaded very, very recently.

  • This game looks badass.

  • cool

  • Always love to see classic SHMUPs reviewed.

  • RayForce? As in what came before RayStorm on the PlayStation, and RayCrisis on the PS2? Or is it all just one big happy coincidence?

  • drool

  • This game is sweet! I still need to get Thunderforce 5 for the Saturn. It's one of the few Saturn shooters I don't have yet.

  • This looks excellent and makes me want a Saturn.

  • Galactic Attack/Layer Section is one of my favorite shmup games. The first one I played in the series was Ray Storm for the PS1. That game was pretty awesome also.

    Great vid Mark.

    Shmups Rock!

  • looks great

  • lollll kewll!

  • its seems everytime i watch cgr its galactic somthing or other

  • That's a sign that you need to watch it more. XD

  • for sure CGRHD Rules!!!!

  • Don't like these games that much

  • nice
