Is it only me, but it seems that every time New Order performs this song, they try to avoid the word 'hangman' as much as possible, singing it more quiet than other lyrics.
This was originally done by Joy Division. New Order did it as a tribute to Ian not long after he passed. Amazing song, gives me goosebumps every time...the drums, the lyrics, the feeling...Incredible!!!
first heard this feb 1981 live in liverpool, b4 new order had even released anything, then heard it on john peel a couple of weeks later, he played both ceremony and in a lonely place for the very first time, one after each other!!!
Wow moving last comments, they have had the same impression on me and i'm ten years younger, fuckin live and breath JD and NO,from Unknown Pleasures to Movement and beyond
I am 50 years old and I feel like I am suspended in time. I feel like I was still a 20. No other band made influence the way Warsaw/JD/New Order did on my brain/mind/. I will never forget ¨In A Lonely Place¨ when I heard it first time on the 12¨ incher I was transfixed. So powerful. And the lyrics of Ian made me respect life. Each day is a gift......I have nothing to prove to anyone. I was there while it was happening...¨Past is now part of my future. The present is well out of hand¨
What I would like to know is, how do the Brits pull this off? Being the seedbed for so much fuckin' good music? A fucking island, for christ's sake! FROLMAO!
" How I wish you were here with me now...woo!" Did I actually here that, at the tail end of the line? Very interesting that Bernard has already put his stamp on the inchoate group, so early on. Substance was full of woos...lol
i get a negative coment for a legitament statement...its soo in your face, even now people look at them like they must have known.but they sincerly didnt know. maybe my statement is why the heart and soul version excludes the rest of the song.
NO! I would totally disagree. I think that the debut commercial album was very much Joy divisionesque, I feel strongly, at least as this video shows, that New Order had permuted. Sumner clearly has his identity stamped across the breadth of this song.
this is an amazing song, the band must have thought ian was an asshole for being so blatent with these lyrics. "hang man looks round as he waits, cord streches tight and breaks" thats fucked up.

I think its not a matter of Bernie imitating Ian more like him being mesmerized by his spirit during this song.

During most the album Barney is trying to sound like Ian. You finally hear him (in the studio, at least) on PCL.

They must of thought that the lyrics were brilliant. Like with the rest of Closer. Completely unaware that he was gonna kill himself.
Also, on H&S, it sounds like the tape got cut just after the final drum note.
