Back when MTV was about music. Total crap now, wouldn't touch it with a ten foot pole. Well, enough about crap, XTC is great. I remember seeing this back in 1988.
God I love this band! King for a Day may be the most beautiful single to escape from the 90s. Among the mindless drivel from that time period, this song is King for Eternity.
Thanks so much for posting this gem from the past. This video is a testament to how far MTV's quality has plummeted. Then, it was actually about music, sometimes great music like this. Now, music (good or bad) is all but gone and every f***ing show revolves around dating. Travesty.
@RT83 andy played several of the songs live in a video guitar lesson for guitar.com. mostly only song fragments, but still super cool to see/hear any of it live.
No music videos, but there is "Easter Theatre", "Frivolous Tonight" and "Green Man", plus a couple of Demos. There's also a great fan video made for "The Wheel and the Maypole" from Wasp Star.
According to Andy his insistance on playing acoustic for this performance was the spark for MTV's Unplugged series. Another gem of originality from XTC.
I recall the same thing from that period, around 1980/1990. XTC's acoustic in studio performance on MTV set the precedent for the Unplugged shows from other acts that soon followed.
Actually, a combination of things led MTV to start the Unplugged series, more specifically Bon Jovi going unplugged later that year at the VMA since more people know who they are... Jethro Tull did an acoustic set on MTV in 1987. So, is XTC original? Of course, but not for this...
I disagree. While English Settlement & Mummer are my favorites and probably their best albums, they remained brilliant until at least the mid to late 1990s. They never lost it creatively.
They quit touring because Andy has stage fright. He had to take medication to perform live, but (from what I heard), back during the English Settlement tour, his (then) wife threw away his medication and he had a breakdown and an ulcer. After a couple more failed tries, they pretty much called it quits.

Pure music as it should be, fantastic.
If XTC could release an unpluged cd I would be first in the queue.
Helicopter live got me bouncing.
I'm off to play the vinyl, I treasure my Black Sea with green paper bag a collectors.
