@joylen41 Yes and yes. Bowlly signed up with Roy Fox and Ray Noble and made a host of successful recordings with Noble's band. Some 10 years later, a German parachute mine killed him instantly in his apartment in Duke Street (near the side of Selfridges) by blowing a door off its hinges and dealing him a fatal blow to the head. Check out his rendition of Brother Can You Spare a Dime ... wartime pathos and nostalgia.
They don't make songwriters anymore the likes of this guy, but you can add to the list Jimmy Van Heusen, Richard Rodgers, Lerner and Lowe, Lorenz Hart and a few others. These songs will and should last forever. Not only do they last, in terms of being 'listenable'...they continue to inspire. Incredible. Lennon and McCartney certainly added several to the pantheon as well.
I agree with bbb665. Al must have recorded this in his later years, as his voice changed a bit tone-wise after his throat surgery. Most certainly not Cole Porter, as great as he was as well.
This is unmistakenly Al Bowlly. Great singer with a very distinctive voice. He was mainly associated with the songwriter/bandleader Ray Noble - check them out on youtube for more of this genre - Wonderful. We played Al Bowlly singing Goodnight Sweetheart at my dear mum's funeral, lovely.
Thanks. I agree. I never heard of Al Bowlly until now. What a great voice, I'm going to have to do a lot of catch up on him - I want to hear more of his stuff.
Anyone know who this singer is? Love this old song and especially Jo Stafford's version but I stumbled upon this version and really like this guys voice. Nelson Eddy sang it in the movie "Rosalie" but this isn't him . This doesn't sound like Cole Porter either. Appreciate any help.
there will never be another Cole Porter, no one could write music and lyrics the way he did, no one! he was the most talented songwriter ever, his lyrics are poems and his melodies are the most beautiful and perfect ones, I love him so much!!!

Al made a recording of a song with this title in 1932 with Lew Stone but this sounds later by his voice and the orch style.
It could be with either with Maurice Winnick or Ronnie Munro in 1938.

It's obviously Bowlly. Why any confusion? True though (as has been said) that his voice dropped a little in tone after the throat operation.

Definitely Bowlly - with no shadow of a doubt.

Yes it definitely sounds like Al Bowlly.
He was the singer of Midnight, the Stars & You (with the Ray Noble Orchestra), used in Kubrick's The Shining.

The late George Melly once described Porter, rightly, as a man who could rhyme whole sentences.
