The Russian names that end in V add an A for the feminine -- the names that end in K do not. So Sergei's mother, sister and daughter were Grinkova and the father and Sergei were Grinkov. Katia's father was Gordeev, but her mother, sister and Katia are Gordeeva. (The Soviet leader Gorbachev's wife was actually Raisa Gorbacheva.) If Katia had taken Sergei's name, she likely would have been Grinkova as well.

@13monkeysrcool Katia never was known as Katia Grinkov. I don't know if she legally took his name or not, but they were known publicly as Gordeeva and Grinkov, so it stayed that way. The Russians have feminine and masculine "tenses" for names, or used to, I'm not sure they do that as much anymore, or if it were just certain names. Katia's father was Gordeev, her mom, Gordeeva. Were Katia a male, her last name would have been Gordeev. They obviously choose to stick with just "Kulik" for Liza.

I remember when Katia and Daria played in Snowden On Ice with Scott Hamilton, Kurt Browning, and Josée Chouinard. They all are amazing figure ice skaters and I can't wait to see if Daria and Liza make the same career choices as thier parents.. Daria has turned out to be a very lovely young lady her dad would be very pleased. And little Liza is a really good figure skater for her age.

Katia is my favorite figure skater of all time. I love this video. Daria is alot like Sergei and is as tall as Katia, she is as good as Katia. Liza is alot like her dad Elia, Liza is a great skater for her age just look at her solo, sooo cute. They make a wonderful family.

Wow, it is amazing. Daria is bigger than her mother already (which is not surprising). She looks like she could be the mother of the other two -- size-wise. She should not be skating next to her mom. Obviously, she is not a serious skater, but still, the discrepancy of ability is just too obvious. Liza still has some more potential. It is hard to be children of such extraordinary talents.

Even after Sergei's death, Katia continued to skate...she's still so beautiful on and off ice. Daria looks so much like Sergei, and little Liza--you can tell she already has her mother's talent, even though she's only seven or eight here.

That painful comment is something I thought but would never say allowed.. the ice skating community was very kind and honorable to support Katia in her hardest moment.. but it is true.. if that had happened in the world of gymnastics (I have been in both worlds.. and currently coach gymnastics) she wouldn' t have been THAT lucky.. skating environment can be so cut throat.. that is why I left skating.. but very supportive if you are famous.. if you didn't make it.. skating is the cruelest..

Daria is as cute as her father was handsome. Sergei and Katia As pairs were the most wonderful in the world. Katia is nothing without Sergei.

Katia & Sergei were a wonderful pairs team, but I would disagree strongly that Katia is "nothing without Sergei." She came into her own a single skater, explored new style, through what was a certainly a very difficult period. Agree with you about her daughters though.

As much as I miss their skating I have to say she's very strong as a person to come back and skate by herself and go on. She does that triple toe jump on a regular basis and its a lot more consistent than when she and Sergei did them side by side in 1990.

have you ever tried syncronised skating - no - it is something that is extremely difficult, and considering her youth she's doing extremely well.

According to an interview she said she doesn't want to be a professional skater. Are you the sort of person that thinks that just because the parent is a professional in a certain sport that the children must be forced to become professionals too? Why would someone want to be professional with judgemental people like you around?

Daria resembles so much to Sergei, not just her smile and her eyes are the same as his were but also some of her movements! And Liza is a little angel :)

they have not, I don't think, done away with eligible and inelegible, but I think, as with most sports, it probably pertains to the number of shows you are in and whether or not you are under contract as opposed to being given an "honorarium" for participating.

The only international rule is that you can only participate in COMPETITIONS that are sanctioned by the International Skating Union (ISU) and you must be in good standing with your national federation. Some national federations have their own rules that apply to non-competitive events. The US Figure Skating Assn used to give skaters more trouble about that ... now they don't seem to. Daria isn't skating anymore, but this will have no impact on Liza's eligibility.
