My name is Aaron Hewitt and I'm an assistant manager at Power Zone Sports Nutrition Store in West Hollywood,Ca. I did the hydrostatic test after Ravi Taylor a friend and personal trainer at Ultra Body Fitness in West Hollywood,Ca. told me I could calculate my caloric intake better to gain lean muscle and lose fat. I thought the test was easy and accurate to within .25% error. I'm sending all my customers to Linda to get body fat tested to help the better understand the calories they need in a
@LipRouge This actually old technology. They've come up with some more modern devices such as DEXA (x-ray) scanning and something else called the "Bod Pod", which uses air displacement, rather than water displacement, to measure body fat.
yes, it has been around for more than 50 years and is still considered a gold standard method of measurement. DEXA is great but expensive. Thanks for commenting!
@BodyFatTestofSoCal I just did it, this weekend. It's hard to get all the air out, because as soon as I think I've blown it all out, my body relaxes and then there's more to blow out, and then more, and more...etc... I probably could have still blown more out, but I was almost ready to come back up. Say I still had a little more air inside of me, how would that affect the results? Body fat % higher?
The air that is left is your residual volume which you cannot get out. There is a somewhat complicated formula that is used in the physiology departments that includes this residual volume adjustment. We use this as well. When we test with people, we have them submerge several times until we have 2 or more repeated underwater weights, this normally takes people 3- 4 submersions to get there. It is normal to "feel" a little air left! a bubble or two is fractional at best....thanks!
It's an outstanding test. My doctor recommended me to take it earlier this year because I've been wanting to know my accurate weight. I arrived at his office one morning, had to put on some compression shorts, held my breath a few times, and that was that.
