very pretty. i never heard of this song until my friend told me that her choir class is singing this when they go to NEW YORK! GO PORT ANGELES HIGH SCHOOL!
a literal trans. to 'ubi caritas et amor deus ibi est' is 'where charity and love (are), god is there'. a literal for just 'ubi caritas' is then 'where charity'.
a more friendly translation, still closer to original is 'ubi caritas' meas 'where there is charity'.
the more common translation says 'where there is love', i think just cause its prettier to say that.
note that 'charity' does not mean 'giving things' - in this context, it means charity in the sense of 'care'
Here is the translation to the Latin: Where charity and love are, there God is. The love of Christ has gathered us into one flock. Let us exult, and in Him be joyful. Let us fear and let us love the living God. And from a sincere heart let us love each other (and Him).
Where charity and love are, there God is. Therefore, whensoever we are gathered as one: Lest we in mind be divided, let us beware. Let cease malicious quarrels, let strife give way. And in the midst of us be Christ our God.
OMG! I have been looking for this song! Thank you so much for posting it!!!!! I lost my celtic spirit album and I miss it... It's not available on iTunes last time I checked. I guess I will have to keep looking!
@AbsolutelyCrackers Hmmm... that's such a shame. I always think where did all of this come from? Humans didn't just invent this for no reason. At least that's a reason to believe.
God is Love. Without God there would be no love. He loves you even though you say you don't believe in Him. Deep inside of every human is a desire for God. I hope one day you will find it. God bless you.
this is latin, here's a part of the kyrics: Ubi caritas et amor Deus ibi est Congregavit nos in unum Christi amor Exsultemus et in ipso jucundemur Et ex corde diligamus nos sincere Ubi caritas et amor Deus ibi est Simul ergo cum in unum congregamur Ne nos mente dividamur caveamus Cessent jurgia maligna, cessent lites Et in medio nostri sit Christus Deus Ubi caritas et amor Deus ibi est Simul quoque cum beatis videamus Glorianter vultum tuum,
we're playing this song in my school's bell choir but we're playing a different arrangement. it's different to hear it sung but i definatly like it. :)
I don't know how you can say there is no God. I mean, prove there is no God. Even something as simple as this music can give you that feeling...that something IS out there...
pure and wonderful, I'm jewish and i adore this song and connie dover, the basic translation of this christian prayer is "were there is charity and love god is there", thats true for all living beings no matter the religion race or species, I hope that soon will come the day of harmony that we all actually live this truth - ALL THERE IS, IS ONE CONSCIOUSNESS, THAT IS GOD. music is a golden bridge and artists like the graceful connie dover are messengers to us all, blessings from israel.
Thank you so much for saying that, I as well am Jewish and have always that the basic message of this song was something not solely Christian, but something that applied to us all. God is One, God is Love.
Latin, man. A chant song Ubi Caritas Ubi caritas et amor Deus ibi est Congregavit nos in unum Christi amor Exsultemus et in ipso jucundemur Et ex corde diligamus nos sincere Ubi caritas et amor Deus ibi est Simul ergo cum in unum congregamur Ne nos mente dividamur caveamus Cessent jurgia maligna, cessent lites Et in medio nostri sit Christus Deus
@punchfan In my version, as I found it long ago, it reads "nos sincero"; and also there's no "j" -which I think it didn't exist in Latin-, so it says "iucundemur" and "iurgia". The rest of the song is: "Ubi caritas et amor, Deus ibi est. Simul quoque cum beatis videamus. Glorianter vultum tuum, Christe Deus. Gaudium quod est immensum, atque probum: Saecula per infinita saeculorum".

Here is the translation to the Latin:
One more verse (ran out of room):
Where charity and love are, there God is.
Together also with the blessed may we see,
Gloriously, Thy countenance, O Christ our God:
A joy which is immense, and also approved:
Through infinite ages of ages.
Amen.

Very pretty harmonies, very Celtic (as one would expect). However, PLEASE learn how to pronounce Latin. PLEASE. The lyrical bit was rather painful.
