  • Straight pipe is way nicer more smoke plus whistle!!

  • for fuel economy only thats the only reason. if u ever looked at miltary surplus most dont have more than 100k on them

  • how reliable are these engines?

  • @TheAb1065 reliable but do like their tlc sometimes, iver never had a problem

  • Bad ass truck but the ski-doo sticker makes it even better!!

  • Has this engine been reliable for you? What's the towing limit on a 2500? Thanks!

  • @HedgehogOutdoors good engine reccomended is 10k some pull it harder (not much harder) and some not as much but about 14k is most u ever wanna pull em

  • worst fuckin motor gm ever made

  • straight pipe!

  • I have a 94 Chevy Blazer Silverado with a 6.5 turbo diesel. I picked it up for cheap because the dealer couldn't get it to run. I had a problem getting it running too until I had the intake manifold off. The EGR ports were "open" so to speak. I was trying to bump the engine over when it came to life! Turns out the catalytic converter was clogged. I daw an old comment saying the diesels don't have cats and also read one about no diesels available as options for these trucks. Thanks for the info!

  • i have this engine in my chevy and i get like 18 mpg i love it!

  • Sound good. Nice truck

  • i didnt get great gains until i rebuilt my injectors with marine internals. i found all 8 bosch on ebay for $99....plus you get an extra 40hp as well

  • help anybody, i have a 98 6.5l turbo im tryin to save some money instead to taking it to the chevy dealer and rippin me off. and and id like some peoples advice. im having a service engine light which is a PO236-TURBOCHARGER BOOST SENSOR A CIRCUIT RANGE/PERFORMANCE. and i read some forms online and i replaced the wastegate solenoid. so far it didnt work. so what are my next options? i poped the hose off the wastegate actuator when the truck was idleing and im getting no suction? bad vacuum mabe?

  • I am still wondering why everyone gets 20+ MPG with these engines.. I only get about 13 to 15 MPG.. I have a 94 crew cab dually. So just removing the Cat and Muffler made the turbo Whine?? What other mods do you have?

  • @lschvz007 i would guess it has to do with you having a crew cab dually...thats alot more truck and wind to push around guy! No modes except cut cat and muffler out, also cut off and plugged turbo silencer...dont ask just scroll through the earlier posts to find out what it is..I explained a while ago.

  • @lschvz007 - Definitely the weight, wind resistance and tire drag from your crew-cab dually is a big part of it. You probably have 4.10 gears too. The truck in this video is a 1/2 ton and I bet it has 3.42 gears. That makes a huge difference in MPG. IIRC his 700R4 trans has a better OD ratio than your 4L80 trans, too.

  • @lschvz007 FYI, My friend has a Crew Cab Dually like yours with a 350 gas engine, and he maxes 11 MPG on the highway, and averages about 8-9 MPG. His is a 1993 3500. My uncle has a Chevy Crew Cab Dually with a 454 on the farm. I believe it's a 1991, and it gets a whopping 5-7 MPG. Both the gas trucks have 4.10 gears and TH-400 transmissions. I'd say you are doing pretty good! Also, what gearing and what transmission do you have, and how fast do you drive?

  • @lschvz007 sounds like your pmd is toast

  • @lschvz007 i dream of 20 mpg mate...i get 9mpg usually and the best ive had was 14 on a run (UK Imperial gallons)...its absolutely pants on fuel....has a new fuel pump, injector tips and had timing gear swapout to try and nail down the timing.......still the same all that money later.....best to use block heater to cut down the wasted time and fuel on warmup......still like the guzzler tho' ........good hauler.

  • @The88Camaro a shit load lol very reliable mine has 283,961.6 Still driving it daily never been rebuild. 80hp chip, 4" turbo back exhaust with 6" tip, HX35 Turbo from 98 cummins, custom intake, 4" downpipe, ssdieselsupply stage 3 cooling upgrade I have towed 24,000 lbs with mine multiple times. Has the NV4500 Manual tranny

  • what kind of mileage do these trucks get?

  • @The88camaro on average i would see 20mpg, best I ever saw was 24

  • just gotta love that sound of the turbo!!

  • i blew out all the crap out of my clogged soot trap and left it on. suburban sounded real nice and then i hooked up the rest of exaust. basically muffler and tailpipe. can't really hear turbo now but engine noise is alot less and truck has more lowend power. all in all was worth it. downpipe looks like it was run over a few times before they put it in. all bent up. nice truck though sounds good

  • damn second clips got quite the wistle

  • the diesel came stock in 98?

  • gotta love that turbo power >.>

  • I have a 6.5 TD and just got straight pipes. Sounds good but I have a wastegate problem so you cant hear the turbo! Very Ticked

  • I like the way the first one sounds when its idelling, but the turbo sounds awesome in the second vid.

  • I want to get one and twin turbo it.

  • can hear that turbo so much better that way lol

  • Just a question...In Italy we don't have this beautiful trucks (unlucly)...but how mani cylinders does it have?? Is it a V8 or a straight six??

  • its a V8. not very powerful compared to its competitors, but then again, it wasn't built to be. It was built to be a work horse. And from what I've heard, the 6.5 is much better than its Duramax successor, despite its issues with the PMD.

  • but the PMD can be permantly fixed if you just mount it somewhere behind the front bumper

  • Inline motors are my personal fave.

  • @ramirezvk56 The 5.9 went through several changes from 89'-07',If you mean it kept 6 cylinders and 5.9l of displacement, then yeah...

  • The 2nd clip sounds soo good. Real V8 power. I am looking at getting chevy 6.5 diesel also. Does having no turbo make much of a difference?

  • yes having no turbo is gutless.....the TD 6.5L is gutless as it is, if you take away the turbo yikes!

  • @machzkeith man you think a non turbo 6.5 is gutless try driving a non turbo 6.2 lol you gotta put it to the floor to get up a hill doin 55 and still loose speed

  • @1985k20silverado Oh I know all about it, my old man still has his 6.2L full size van he bought new in 1990. I always liked flooring that thing cause it sounded like it was so powerful but the reality was it was doing nothing but making noise and pushing a lot of wind!

  • @machzkeith yeah my uncle has this 1983 (or somthin around there) gmc sierra 2500 with a 6.2 non turbo and god that thing is a turd, off the line it feels like it has alot of power but at about 20mph its gone lol it's a very reliable engine/tranny, he drives that thing everywhere everyday checkin cows and going to town for the last 27 years and still does. Its crazy i keep telling him to get a new one and he says when this one breaks... im tempted to cut some wires or somthing lol

  • @1985k20silverado thats exactly why it bogs, no turbo, thats where all the top end power is, and he'll be waiting a long time for that 6.2 to break, detroits are hard to kill

  • @1985k20silverado sure it might not be impressive, but for a kid who likes diesels, doesn't race anywhere and needs to conserve fuel, 6.2s are great engines. (If you want power and speed, get a Cummins.)

  • @Flyboy207 exactly

  • @machzkeith then it isa 6.2 a pig

  • @fdnyalf319 well theres a reason they put 6.5 and 6.2s in tanks and jeeps for the army u decide

  • @elliotmotoX I owned a 6.5 natural for over 10 years in a K5 Blazer Silverado. Not having the turbo in that particular application was not as scary as it sounds. I towed several boats, plus utility trailers loaded with gear, mulch, dirt, you name it. Pulled trucks home- towed home an 89 Ford Extra Cab 4wd Diesel once, engine didn't even strain on it. My downfall was the short wheelbase. Not a screamer off the line, but she would move swiftly once she was rolling. 25 mpg- best part.

  • @elliotmotoX yes it does! about 40 HP diff

  • banks performance has the fastest diesel truck ever made its a cummins now i dont like dodge or chevy but their diesels are better than ford

  • Please tell me why the Duramax's are breaking speed records for diesels all over the country and the duramax will out pull a cummins any day of the week... if you dont believe me, hook up to one. I won't deny the reliability of the Cummins... their expected life is a million miles (damn hard to beat), the duramax still has some proving to do when it comes to longevity.

  • that truck came from the factory with diesel?

  • yes, for a while the did offer the 1/2 tons with a diesel as they did the tahoes and the yukons

  • very cool!

  • No im not saying that v8 got more power than cummins, i was talking about sound, and i think example straight pipe v8 scanias sound better than some 6 cylinder truck and its same in pick-ups and vans, but that is just my opinion, everybody thinks that own truck is the best.

  • well powerstroke never even starts and cummins has only 6 cylinders so v8 forever and ofcourse chevy

  • @turbodiesel65

so your saying a 6.5 will beat a semi cause they're a six cylinder ?

  • doesnt matter if cummins only has 6 cylinders, still can produce mad power.

  • the sound from a chevy or gmc diesel engne is like a old mann farting a cummins or a powerstroke sound much better by far!

  • sounds good

  • you have to pay a fee (money) to use a dyno man

  • Yeah but the results probably aren't worth the dyno fee.

  • Good sound leave it all off !! Got make more power and fuel mileage too plus get hear the turbo ! I have a cummins all stock that was the first thing i did to the truck was remove muffler and cat i love the sound and pick up 1.5 more mpg too . So it was like a soar peter cant beat it !

  • Ooooo weeeEE!!! Oh yeah, she was sounding good before you removed the muffler and cat but I wanted to slap myself when you cranked that sucker the second time!!! God knows that thing sounds SWEET!!!

  • My 3500 was originally a light duty 2500 and it had 6 lug rims, but the where unique. but the rocker panels make these trucks absolutely gorgeous.

  • sweet truck

  • sounds great that way

  • they come from the factory with the 6.5 in them...the rims give it away if you can't get close enough to see the 1500 or 2500. 1500 have spoke rims like mine and 2500 have ugly solid rims.

  • @machzkeith my dads 95 silverado gasser is a 2500 and came with the spoked rims and i think they look pretty good.

  • sounds so good!

  • i want ur truck ha

  • love the idle of the ol 6.5's, sounds badass after it gets strait piped!

  • Have you notice any change in power or MPG?

  • Little more power but not much improvement on the MPG though. Huge difference in the breathing of the truck though as you can tell by the sound of the turbo.

  • Where did you pick up your muffler and cat delete pipes for the stock 3inch system? I have been looking to install one on my 2500hd for a while now

  • The local mechanic had the pipe at his shop.

  • gotta love your detroit diesel!

  • why does a 1500 have a diesel

  • 1500 with Diesels were heavy duty half tons. Why u ask I dont know, I guess because they figured they could sell more trucks if they offered it.

  • did they sell more trucks that way?

  • I dont have figures but for every 2500 diesel I see on the road there is about 8-10 1500s that have already past. Just my opinion.

  • you know it actually sounds like opening up the exaust quiets down the diesel knock

  • Gah that turbo is whistling!

  • ya because a 3.0l can pull 20000 pound....right...in a car...anything over three is over kill...but in a truck the 7.4 powerstroke or the 6.6 duramax is almost too little

  • Yeah. I have a BMW 325iS and it is just fine. What do u have?

  • vw passat 1.9 tdi sport

  • do you do alotta hualin with ur passat? any off roading? how the 4x4 in it? can u haul backhoes an shit with it? or really? u cant? cause its a car?

  • @jta283 Don't off road with a diesel, its stupid and not worth the cost to repair them

  • @mirlin235 clearly you didnt read the conversation i was in at the time i wrote that comment, even though in my comment i even talk about a passat you read passed in and called me stupid. and there is no problem with off roading a diesel, i have for years and no damage done so please mirlin 235 read surrounding comments before saying such a thing and making youself look like a fool.

  • @jta283 No I didn't, because if your a diesel owner you know, off roading a diesel is a very dumbfuck idea. Buy a Toyota to do that, not a Diesel. I would never trust anybody with a diesel truck if I owned a shop, hell I'd never trust you with any diesel truck, even it you were taking it for a few hours. Doesn't matter whether or not you off road with a regular truck or a Toyota, you shouldn't be using a diesel for fun off roading. You kill A) the Motor, and B) the truck, unless you have money

  • @mirlin235 toyota? whay are you bring a toyota into this? and if your into toyotas why are you watching this video? and the 6.5 has been around for going on 2 decades now the prices to repain these things has dropped. and if you dont feel the 6.5 can be off roaded why have they installed them in the humvee? surly the best military in the world wouldnt use and unrelaible engine for over a decade too. and if you argue the men driving the humvees dont run the hell outta them you would be wrong.

  • @jta283 No I'm not into toyota's, I actually hate them, I love fords, and old chevys

Dude Humvees are shit, they are being replaced, the only reason they are still in service is because they can carry the load of men into battle, other than that, they can't do much, the newer versions have a Cummins to tell you the truth. Also just for fun I'll let you in on one of my little secrets, I'm trying to join the army, so I know all about the Humvee, I also know guys who died in them, they aren't what

  • @mirlin235 You think, they are far from being the best truck in the world

They at one point were very good, but, into a more modern time were crappy as hell. I just think that 4x4ing a diesel is a dumb idea, use a smaller pickup with a gas motor too do that with, diesel trucks are for working, and towing and haulling

  • how much HP

  • not sure never been dynoed. Stock these trucks were 190-195hp. I also have K&N and straight pipe which I'm sure help out a little.

  • Not to loud, the turbo silences the noise quite a lot apart from the more noticable lovely whistle sound....like a locomotive!

    cool.

  • that truck is badass

  • I asked a mechanic buddy of mine and he said it wont be enough cold air to warp the valves for one because the turbo will slow down the back draft but also only so much back draft is able to get up there befor its full and its not enough to warp the valves.

  • would you know how much a truck like this would cost im lookin for an older diesel

  • depends where u live really...USA versus Canada there is a big difference. In the US I have no idea. Alberta and Manitoba would be similar to here..a typical truck will go for $5000 (300000+ kms and beat up) to $10000 (200000 and less in real nice shape).

  • does it have any good power????

  • as opposed to bad power??? jks, ummm its a 6.5 they aren't exactly work horses but it does quite well for my towing needs. If you want to pull a 10000lb 5th wheel and still be able to run the quarter mile in under 18secs. then I suggest you look at other motors. The main draw to these engines is the low cost to getting into a diesel truck.

  • Man that sounds nice...I have a 6.5 97 Chevy TD that i want to do the same thing to. Can you tell me about how much it cost to have that done and would it make it louder if i used 3in pipe? Thanks!

  • I paid under just over $100 then sold soot trap for $60 and kept muffler. Try egay if you want price on 3" and 4". You will get a little more volume but definiately better performance simply by changing the down pipe.

  • Thanks!!

  • I'll let you know how it goes I might even post a vid!!

  • sick truck man

  • Then you have already removed the silencer if you followed the installation instructions.

  • That is a gorgeous truck, its in amazing condition for its age! One quick question though, what alarm system are you using. It has a unique tune when you unlocked it.

    Thanks,

    Casey

  • Thanks, I have a PolarStart alarm/starter combo with the 2 way remote. I like it alot, works great!

  • It is not a muffler is is called a silencer. It is a plastic tube under the hood, commected to the air cleaner tube.

  • Man thats a really nice truck im gonna save up and by a 98 6.5 Z71 next spring

  • To plug mine I used the end of the tube, just cut it so thgat part of the bracket used to bolt it down would stick out, thus preventing it from ever accidentally being sucked in by the turbo. Then I used a hose clamp to keep it there.

  • Do you have an intake?

I removed my muffler and my turbo doesnt whistle like that.

Is the cat that restrictive? Mines still in

  • I have the factory intake and yes the cat (soot trap) is restrictive. Another thing I did was remove the "turbo muffler" a neat little tube gm put on there to reduce the whistle of the turbo!! Crazy I know! I never noticed a difference from removing the turbo muffler until I changed over to straight pipe. Your prob wondering what the turbo muffler is...well its that black tube that comes straight out from the front of the turbo. Its about 1 1/2" diameter and mabe 14" long.

  • I <3 this car.

  • that sounds great!:)

  • whistle sounds like bombs droppin!

  • you can hear the turbo a lot better and it is a lot sharper with a smokey start with out soot trap

  • hate to tell you this but diesels dont have cats

  • soot trap if you must....

  • @brenner315 sucks when you try to be a smartass but make yourself look lik ean idiot. Why dont you do a little research before you open your mouth next time,,,since diesels do have cats....not all...but some

  • whoow ther dont hurt that chevi you might have to buy a ford

  • Hell yea listen to that turbo

  • I will have to put my Evil Diesel on here. Running straight pipe and just put the 4" to stacks in.

  • Thats whistle is awesome!

Sounds like a turbine or something off of a spaceship.

  • or a turbo? lol

  • yea i love the whistling sound too. shiiit i found the one i like sell me yours. lol. try to get a vid of wide open throtle from stand still and 55 on

  • whats the fuel milage like

  • usually around the 18mpg on the highway. I have seen 23mpg once...still not sure what was diff on that trip but I liked it.

  • is this milage after the exhaust work or before. i was wondering because im looking to buy a 6.5 diesel. i cant find the z71 model anywhere.

  • The second clip sounds much nicer, even a hint of turbo whistle.

  • do you get any performance diference?

  • It seems to run smoother, but no recordable difference after testing with my Gtech. However, a free flowing exhaust on these trucks is a must if you want to start to increase the performance...in other words its an esential part to seeing gains with other products.

  • If anyone pulls off their cat, don't forget to keep it and sell it for cash pays for the half the cost to have a shop remove it.

  • how loud is it on the inside of the cab w/ a straight pipe? I have a Blazer with a 6.5 in it and was thinking about doing this.

  • I never noticed any increase inside the cab. Mainly due to how loud these 6.5L engine are, the engine sounds is louder than the exhaust, so no worries. I put a vortex muffler on my denali with a 6.0L gas and it was ridiculously loud drone in the cab...to the point it was annoying. But these trucks with the straight pipe sounds nice outside, with no difference inside. IMO anyways.

  • this video inspired me to rip out all of the stock exhaust on my 6.5, great video

  • Hey man nice truck. I got a 95 6.5 with 280,000km and it runs sweet with the striaght pipe.

  • Sounds so much better the second time, love that turbo whistle. WTF did they put a cat on it for in the first place?

  • Nice truck. Had a 94 with a rotten exhaust. Sounded very nice. Pretty similar to yours. When the exhaust finally rotted off at the collector flange (man was that loud, couldnt hear the radio) decided to put a straight pipe on it behind the cab

  • They become restrictive because when something goes bad or gets worn out, the engine will usually ends up running richer and damage the cat. Bad injectors, worn out injector pump, etc. Do you get my point?

  • That was stupid. Only retards who know nothing about exhaust systems would remove the cat. Newsflash fuckhead, Catalitic converters are not restrictive. Only the old pellat style cats from the 70s were restrictive. All you've done is make more noise, and more emissions.

  • newsflash more noise is something he was going for and they are restrictive, less restrictive yeah but they aren't as free flowing as a straight pipe

  • Have you ever looked through a catalytic converter? How come its so difficult to see light through it if its so non restrictive? Oh and those screens at each end I suppose cause the air flow to speed up because the air is being forced through tiny holes, not slow the air flow down. BTW I was going for more noise (hence a video of the sound), also many cats are restrictive (hence free flow performance cats). PS rudeness is a sign of insecurity :)

  • Heres an idea. Find a car with a good exhaust system, remove the precat 02 sensor, attach a pressure gauge and read the amount of backpressure. BTW good luck trying to pass an emission test. hahaha...

  • This is a DIESEL, not a gasser. Whole different scenario

  • giberish9. wtf are you talking about? the cats on these trucks are VERY restrictive. you should've seen the one that i took off of MY truck. plugged up and restrictive as hell. after i cut it off it ran much better. these truck burn very clean so the cat is not needed.

  • Chevy is really good at making restrictive cats. They're like bricks. hahaha

  • my truck dont run clean!!! LOL. I turned the pump on my 6.5 til it stopped along with 40hp marine injectors. Let the coal roll!!!

  • hey farmboy56 email me and tell me how to turn up the pump cuz i dont want to fuck with it if i cant fix it

  • as you say. newsflash fuckhead. diesels burn cleaner than your gasser car. why is it always the idiots who claim to know everything yet they post no videos to prove it? your such a know it all behind that keyboard aren't you? why don't you get one of these trucks before you talk like you know something hmm?

  • Ok. I admit it. I don't have much experience working on diesel engines. I haven't posted any videos because every time I try using windows movie maker, I have trouble importing my videos. And I did get a diesel, I'm picking it up this weekend.

  • Just wait the first thing your gonna wanna do when you get it is cut out the cat the get some volume and the sweet sound of a turbo spool....ya hypocrite!!! Its funny when people go shooting their mouths off, claiming to have all the answers, calling people names and stuff, and then they realize their wrong. Hopefully they also can realize how dumb they look and maybe will approach things differently next time. PS we don't have emissions tests here...hahahaha!

  • I don't have to cut it off, it will probably fall off if I hit a good bump in the road.

  • with the cat and muffler removed you can hear the turbo whistle much more clear.

  • i didn't know this year came with a diesel .. especiallly the Z71 edition

  • 6.5L TurboDiesels came in 1/2, 3/4, 1 ton trucks and also in blazers, suburbans, and tahoes starting in what I believe in 1993. Produciton ended in 99 except for in 1tons lasted until 2000.
