It's REALLY HARD to be both a socialist and a fascist, since they are pretty much on the opposite end of the spectrum. Also, if you hate socialism, you will have to give up the post office, military, public education, libraries, natural parks, public beaches, the internet, the police, fire companies, farm subsidies, and environmental protection. In order to have these things offered to the public, a moderation of socialist policy is necessary.
@noahbox ***It's REALLY HARD to be both a socialist and a fascist, since they are pretty much on the opposite end of the spectrum***
There's no spectrum. All political systems can be represented as points on a circle. Fascism and socialism abut each other, directly opposite free market capitalism.
Since socialism can be described as a political theory and as an economic theory, it makes discussing hard sometimes.
As an economic theory, socialism (use-values/govt distribution/merit-based wages) is dissimilar to fascism (corporation run wage and price modeling). They have similarities (lack of econ. freedom) and differences (control).
As a political movement, however, there is a generally accepted conventional spectrum, on which socialism and fascism are exact opposites.
'Conventional: established by general consent or accepted usage; conforming or adhering to accepted standards.' What ideology has defined usage and set acceptable standards in Western education since the 1960s, Noah? Put the textbook aside and try a little independent thinking.
@noahbox -- You are confusing social services with Socialism. Not the same thing. Social services are a contract between citizens and their gov't for certain services. Socialism is gov't ownership of the economic machine. Very different.
The difference between Hitler the Facist and Stalin the Communist was what? The post office and the military are in the realm of the federal govt. Public education, police, fire, parks are in the realm of the states or are supposed to be according to the Constitution. Farm subsidies should not exist. Every time the govt gets involved in soemthing, they screw it up like a pre Medicare doctors visit for $3 or 5 for a house call.
I am Andrew Ryan, and I'm here to ask you a question. Is a man not entitled to the sweat of his brow? 'No!' says the man in Washington, 'It belongs to the poor.' 'No!' says the man in the Vatican, 'It belongs to God.' 'No!' says the man in Moscow, 'It belongs to everyone.' I rejected those answers; instead, I chose something different.
Cool? Yeah, the people who died in Sibiria in the Soviet gulags knew how "cool" it is. The people risking their lives to get out of the socialist "paradise" in Eastern Europe, back during the Cold War, knew how "cool" it is.
When you go to a college town to interview students and teachers studying social sciences, you'll find that there is very little fear of socialism. Perhaps it is because they have a different understanding of what socialism is?
I'm sure if you asked the same people if they support authoritarian society, tyranny, or even pure state-socialism, many would say no. However, as far as a social science worldview goes, that bumper sticker might as well say: social security and public highways are evil!
Socialism is the Tyranny of the Majority. I'd ask each of these people... "If I gathered signatures on a petition in your town, to put up a ballot question to TAKE OWNERSHIP OF YOUR HOUSE WITHOUT PAYING YOU FOR IT, and give it to a homeless advocacy foundation - and if 75% of your neighbors voted to approve the measure - would you happily surrender the house?"
Your example is a potential failing of pure democracy, and why certain ancient Greek thinkers called democracy the Tyranny of the Majority. Tyranny of the Majority has little to do with socialism or capitalism. Google "Ochlocracy."
Your argument is an ancient one, but against democracy, not socialism. It's one of the reasons why we live in a republic. Thankfully, we have minority rights to protect us from abuse of democracy in this country.
@noahbox - You're actually correct - socialism is an economic theory, tyranny is a characteristic of MANY oppressive forms of government, including those claiming to represent the will of the majority through "DICTATORSHIP of the Proletariat". I should have been more clear, and said "Democratic Socialism" is Tyranny of the Majority. But - one habit of Libs here is to discredit people for not adequately defining the specific meaning of terms used - when you know space here is too limited 4that..
Please tell me where your "minority rights" originate, who guarantees them? If, say, the Nat'l Guard came w/guns to your university, and, say, they order protesters to shut up and go home or be arrested or worse... if the gov't decides to violate your minority rights, JUST WHO do you plan to ask for this protection? Many Dems want Obama to have authority to shut down the internet - would they be so enthusiastic if Nixon was POTUS and losing the tapes today?
There are obvious problems with a pure command system of economy, but you would have to be a fringe economist to even suggest that socialist policies don't have value in modern society. There are so many problems with pure capitalism that it's just as impossible to run as a purely socialist state. The question is proper balance of market forces.
Of course, I wonder if the guys handing out bumper stickers even bothered to study economics or government.
150,000,000 excess deaths during the 20th century due to socialism is definitely not 'cool'. Even the watered down versions in Europe today exact a heavy toll in prosperity and well being, from lowered personal income to reduced freedom to inferior health care.
I wonder if these "supporters" are just paid cheerleaders who stand behind Obama and stupidly cheer after every one-liner he says. You see it all the time. You never hear a boo or a negative heckler challenging him. These idiots are just drones. complete zombies.
If you like socialism, your are welcome to implement it on a small scale with your friends and family (and leave the rest of us out of it). Start sharing your income with your neighbors, pay their dental bills, work for a non profit and give most of your income to starving people in Africa. Nobody is holding you back. Just stop pushing for stealing from other people. You have no right to my house or my car or my dog.
@BlueSkies360 Nobody wants your house or your dog. People want health care and education, two things that are much more available in every other advanced country in the world.
@BrianTenenbaum Wait a minute. Paying for your HC and education IS taking away MY house and MY dog. Where will the money come from? In socialism it gets taken away from other people by FORCE (pay taxes or go to prison).. I prefer people getting money from their family and friends, not from the government that takes it away from a stranger BY FORCE. You don't support robbing people on the street, do you?
If you are suggesting that Hitler's Germany was socialist- this has some truth. It was authoritarian with some socialist policies. Modern Germany is a democratic society. Yet they have more socialist policies now than they did under Hitler.
For the record, I'm not a socialist and for the most part identify with capitalism and the free-market. However, I think it's hard for us to have a real conversation about socialism when we can't agree on the meaning of the word.
@noahbox Nazi Germany was socialist. Hitler was far on the left side and following Marx's orders. Just like Stalin, ironically. Marx once wrote that "inferior classes and races must be wiped out." Hitler did the races, Stalin the classes. Hitler had strong tones of class warfare in his party. Stalin had his fair share of racism.
As for modern Germany, blame it on the out of control welfare state. Germany is bankrupt thanks to it (despite high taxes), proving again that socialism isn't working.
@erikwhittington Whoever thinks socialism is cool, probably also thinks that Cuba 'isn't an example of true socialism.' Those people don't understand history, human nature, and the principles of civil society.
If you are against anything socialist then you need to give up all rights to medicare, medicaid, access to the police, fire departments, public libraries, public schools, public roads, social security etc etc. I could go on but I think it's clear that you guys are uneducated idiots ;)
@ChipChesterstone Having been growing up and living in China for more than 20 years, I have to say that I can't disagree with you more. If you are suggesting that the opposite of soclialism is anarchism, then I don't know what kind of parallel world you are living in. Socialism isn't about the specific idea of health care, public schools or social security, it is about government taking control of every inch of individual's life.
@hegel325 Although I respect your experiences, what you describe is not socialism; it's authoritarianism. Nordic countries have social democracies that function with high levels of personal freedom. Countries like Germany have mixed economic systems with a strong socialist bent. All of these countries rank high on personal liberty indexes, some of them above the United States.
And yes: public schools, the post office, and social security are examples of socialist policies in the US.
I'm sorry; I do not understand your comment. Can you explain why supporting public goods and services is comparable to denying the Holocaust?
I happen to support the internet, the highway system, the military, and public education. I support curbing pollution and the protection of natural resources. I support protection of elderly and infirm. These all stem from socialist policies.
The Holocaust did not; it has nothing to do with socialism.
@jpeditor If Hitler's party were a good example of national socialists, I suppose North Korea is a good example of a democratic people's republic?
I'm sure you know that socialism is similar, but not exactly the same as Marxism or communism in academia .You should also know that socialism isn't necessarily linked to authoritarianism, and can be practiced with success in a mixed form in a modern democratic republic: see Finland/Denmark/Germany. All 3 rank high in prosperity and liberty indexes.
@noahbox Nazis weren't a good enough example 4 u? TRY THE GULAGS & camps in the USSR & PRC. Over 100 million killed via Marx, NOT via ACADEMIA. "Socialism" is for people who won't have the guts to pick up a gun and push communism. Make sure you put rear view mirrors on your glases. You're more likely to take a bullet from your comrades.
@noahbox, it's headed that way, you moron. Try keeping up with current events. And I'm not interested in having a discussion with some ignorant young man who just spouts talking points. You're not convincing anyone that you're intellectual.
If you are suggesting that I am pro-tyranny, pro-ochlocracy, or whatever, you are wrong. I am pro-constitution, pro-capitalism, and pro-republic. I'm simply shocked by the fact that people are mistaking socialism for things like fascism (anti-communism), democracy (majority rule), authoritarianism, etc. It's not even exactly the same as communism or Marxism. Also, socialism is NECESSARY (in moderation) in modern society. It's about balance.
@ShaytanBozorg In fact, denying the Holocaust is outlawed. You will end up in court and in jail if you do that in Europe. However, you can happily deny the holocaust on the Armenians, or the Soviet crimes. Nobody will do anything about that. It's the typical Euro-peon way of dealing with things. Hitler's "right" wing was evil, even though the guy was as far left as Lenin. But Lenin was good, Stalin was not so good, but not bad. Mao was great. Che was great. That's Europe today.
@noahbox Sorry I didn't see your reply until just now .I think you are confusing two terms here. Saying that some public policies are "socialist" is not tantamount to saying that the political system under which the government implements such kind of public policy is "socialism." If you look at the financial markets in China now you can say that China is one of the most "capitalist" countries in the world, yet it is a million lightyears away to say that China has been converted to "capitalism."
@noahbox with regard to those Nordic countries, Karl Marx sees socialism as an interim form standing in between capitalism and communism when the the country is not capable of making a direct jump because of the socio-ecnomic facts. The general idea of social welfare in a capitalist country that iswidely supported by the left may overlap with some basic principles of socialism, but they are not the same.
@ChipChesterstone And I can't believe that so many Obama/Perriello supporters in cville actually think Socialism is COOL. This just scares me. You Americans don't realize how lucky you are to be born in this free country where you have the right to move, the right to speech, the right to vote and the right to your very own economic freedom (to a very large extent). You may think "oh wth do they have anything to do with socialism?" Well it'd be too late when you can actually figure it out.
Your lumping together items which are not neccesarily socialist with one's which are to make a point, which is a fallacy. National healthcare through Medicare is definitely socialism, but a local public library supported solely through LOCAL funds is NOT socialist.
We know that many institutions are socialist in the US, that doesn't automatically make them okay.
@joshdamons If local schools or libraries are regulated, paid for, and distributed mostly through local government- that is socialism. It's just that it's on a small scale.
I say we take all who like socialism along w/ Obama and his cronies round em up put them on a plane and drop them on their own little socialist island in the middle of nowhere.
The woman who says "Socialism Is Cool" at the end is Fran Brock. She lives in Berryville, VA and works for Oracle in Reston, VA.
I don't know who her "friend" is...

BlueSkies360 1 year ago 21
@BlueSkies360 Nobody wants your house or your dog. People want health care and education, two things that are much more available in every other advanced country in the world.
BrianTenenbaum 1 year ago

However, I think it's hard for us to have a real conversation about socialism when we can't agree on the meaning of the word.
noahbox 1 year ago
@noahbox Nazi Germany was socialist. Hitler was far on the left side and following Marx's orders. Just like Stalin, ironically. Marx once wrote that "inferior classes and races must be wiped out." Hitler did the races, Stalin the classes. Hitler had strong tones of class warfare in his party. Stalin had his fair share of racism.
As for modern Germany, blame it on the out of control welfare state. Germany is bankrupt thanks to it (despite high taxes), proving again that socialism isn't working.

@noahbox, oh, stop with this ignorant talking point that young males can't stop repeating because they heard someone else saying. Shut up.

ChipChesterstone 1 year ago
@ChipChesterstone Having been growing up and living in China for more than 20 years, I have to say that I can't disagree with you more. If you are suggesting that the opposite of soclialism is anarchism, then I don't know what kind of parallel world you are living in. Socialism isn't about the specific idea of health care, public schools or social security, it is about government taking control of every inch of individual's life.
hegel325 1 year ago 2
@hegel325 Although I respect your experiences, what you describe is not socialism; it's authoritarianism. Nordic countries have social democracies that function with high levels of personal freedom. Countries like Germany have mixed economic systems with a strong socialist bent. All of these countries rank high on personal liberty indexes, some of them above the United States.
And yes: public schools, the post office, and social security are examples of socialist policies in the US.

@noahbox, try denying the Holocaust in Europe -- they'll send you to the Gulag. :)
ShaytanBozorg 1 year ago
@ShaytanBozorg
The Holocaust did not; it has nothing to do with socialism.
noahbox 1 year ago
@noahbox The Holocaust was implemented by SOCIALISTS. & here's part of Marx's 10 pt plan:
Abolition of property in land and application of all rents of land to public purposes....Abolition of all right of inheritance....
Centralization of credit in the hands of the state, by means of a national bank with state capital and an exclusive monopoly....
Centralization of the means of communication and transport in the hands of the state....
Thats socialism and it means the end of freedom.

All 3 rank high in prosperity and liberty indexes.
noahbox 1 year ago
@noahbox Nazis weren't a good enough example 4 u? TRY THE GULAGS & camps in the USSR & PRC. Over 100 million killed via Marx, NOT via ACADEMIA. "Socialism" is for people who won't have the guts to pick up a gun and push communism. Make sure you put rear view mirrors on your glases. You're more likely to take a bullet from your comrades.
jpeditor 1 year ago
@noahbox, you're denying the fall of Europe into totalitarianism.
ShaytanBozorg 1 year ago
@ShaytanBozorg You're saying Europe is currently under totalitarian rule? Have you ever been there? Or checked the personal liberties index?
noahbox 1 year ago
@noahbox, it's headed that way, you moron. Try keeping up with current events. And I'm not interested in having a discussion with some ignorant young man who just spouts talking points. You're not convincing anyone that you're intellectual.
ShaytanBozorg 1 year ago 2
@ShaytanBozorg I don't understand your comment.
It's about balance.
noahbox 1 year ago
@ShaytanBozorg In fact, denying the Holocaust is outlawed. You will end up in court and in jail if you do that in Europe. However, you can happily deny the holocaust on the Armenians, or the Soviet crimes. Nobody will do anything about that. It's the typical Euro-peon way of dealing with things. Hitler's "right" wing was evil, even though the guy was as far left as Lenin. But Lenin was good, Stalin was not so good, but not bad. Mao was great. Che was great. That's Europe today.
higuma75 1 year ago 2
@noahbox Sorry I didn't see your reply until just now .I think you are confusing two terms here. Saying that some public policies are "socialist" is not tantamount to saying that the political system under which the government implements such kind of public policy is "socialism." If you look at the financial markets in China now you can say that China is one of the most "capitalist" countries in the world, yet it is a million lightyears away to say that China has been converted to "capitalism."
hegel325 1 year ago
@noahbox with regard to those Nordic countries, Karl Marx sees socialism as an interim form standing in between capitalism and communism when the the country is not capable of making a direct jump because of the socio-ecnomic facts. The general idea of social welfare in a capitalist country that iswidely supported by the left may overlap with some basic principles of socialism, but they are not the same.
hegel325 1 year ago
@ChipChesterstone And I can't believe that so many Obama/Perriello supporters in cville actually think Socialism is COOL. This just scares me. You Americans don't realize how lucky you are to be born in this free country where you have the right to move, the right to speech, the right to vote and the right to your very own economic freedom (to a very large extent). You may think "oh wth do they have anything to do with socialism?" Well it'd be too late when you can actually figure it out.
hegel325 1 year ago 3
@ChipChesterstone
Your lumping together items which are not neccesarily socialist with one's which are to make a point, which is a fallacy. National healthcare through Medicare is definitely socialism, but a local public library supported solely through LOCAL funds is NOT socialist.
We know that many institutions are socialist in the US, that doesn't automatically make them okay.
joshdamons 1 year ago 2
@joshdamons If local schools or libraries are regulated, paid for, and distributed mostly through local government- that is socialism. It's just that it's on a small scale.
noahbox 1 year ago
@ChipChesterstone I'll give those up as long as the government stops forcing me to pay for it - LOL
