If it's purpose is to patrol oil wells etc, there is no practical reason for the robot to look identical to a real fish.

It could look like a submarine, or a torpedo if that is what functions best.

That's what I was about to say. They're so intent on making it look like a real fish, I was surprised when they said it was sponsored by an oil company, who simply want to use it to move from place to place and transmit data.

Maybe the engineers and scientists developing it have a different vision, maybe they're trying to kill two brids with one stone. If they perfect a way to make a lifelike robotic fish, maybe they could put it to some other uses than this.
