I wish my degus were that social...they only run up to me when I shake their bag for food. They're such fatties, they clean out their giant bowl of food every day and I have to fill it back up again x.x
Hi I adopted three boy degus about two weeks ago, i think they're about 6 months old, but they dont afraid me when they r in their cage and they'll run to me when i near by, but not after they comes out of the cage, when i open the door they just try to run out and they wont let me touch them like how u touch ur degu in the video they ll just keep run around the room and i will have to catch them.... is it normal? need more time to tame them or???? cuz i really want to let them like ur degu= (
I think that is a sort of instinct that degus have. I think their mums do that to stop them making noise when they are a baby. Now if someone could only do that to a human...

@XxBeatlesforeverxX I am the owner of two degu's. No they will not bite you pretty much ever. Unless you like beat them or something but who would? They can be tame; as long as you play with them a lot. And yes they do love to be handled. They get extremely depressed and might die if you don't. Over all; degu's are super loving and caring animals which make great pets. Make sure you don't keep them alone though!
@Fumaaz yh dey r I got 2 and we r currently training them to walk on a harness (known by our neighbour as ' freaking out da german shepard across da road) and we just schrach dem when they do it well
wow this is great, i had gerbils and they didn't feel very comfortable being touched and held in hands .. but these guys seem to love getting touched and they seem to be VERY social with humans .. I also saw a video with some guy teaching his degus .. They are pretty intelligent :))
Hahaha! Your so lucky you can get your degu to stay still. My baby degu, Poe, is only three months old, when ever we open her cage door she goes running out supper fast and will let you touch her for two seconds before she's off to explore something. XD
My degus used to do the exact same thing. Very affectionate little rodents. When I'd get up in the morning, he would squeak til I'd go and play with him. He would also sit on my shoulder and watch tv with me. I would also give him to my dog when I'd go to bed, and they'd play all night and he would sleep in my dogs fur. I have a border collie and he's super smart. They got along really well. My dog was devastated when my degus died. It was his partner in crime. I recommend a degus to anyone.
hey im thinking about getting 2 degus just a few things i want to ask : i like music so would i have to have it quiet ? and also what size cage would i need for 2 young degus ( my parents are going to build a large wooden cage with a glass front in )
@wtfuhit99 a degu cage should have the dimensions of at least : 100 (L) x 50 (W) x 100 (H). You can have a slightly smaller base if you add to the height, but it's not reccomended you keep more than 2-3 degus in a cage with less than that floor space - in other words, adding more height won't compensate. There's a degu calculator online (try searching degu calculator with a search engine) where you can enter the dimensions of your cage and it will tell you how many adults can live in it.
My baby Degu is acting so strange, first he eats the sand instead of having a bath in it plus he sleeps most of the day and bites the bars of his cage at night. What can i do to make him stop biting the wire? please help
Hey there.. nah, that's pretty normal for a degu. I wouldn't worry. Degus are very active creatures - they do eat sand much like birds .. you can't really stop them from biting the wire - it's a natural instinct. Ours does that sometimes - not as much as before, but we "pshhht" at her when she does so perhaps she's learned that sound isn't nice so stop biting the bars.. ??? I have no idea, but she's stopped.
the reason why they bite the wire is because they have to grind their teeth. If they dont do this their teeth grow to long and it makes it difficult for them to eat properly. Similarly with the sand. You need to put some tree bark in the cage to give them something to chew on.
@n1les Dunno if this is still of any use to you, but could your degu be bored? Constant bar gnawing can be a sign of boredom in many animals. Check he's got plenty of space in his cage and buy him some interesting new toys to play with and rearrange them in new ways to keep them fun.
You can also let him run around in a safe escape-proof room, such as a bathroom, during the day to encourage him to be more active then rather than at night. Sit and play with him to improve your bond as well.
@n1les@NewTeach@n1les Try taking the wheel out of the cage and only putting it in for an hour in the morning. Degus often become nocturnal with unlimited access to a wheel or if daytime temperatures rise above 24c.
Have both/all your Degus become Nocturnal or just one of them.
@n1les They nibble the bars to gnaw their teeth down like rabbits. Their teeth never stop growing, so they wear them down to stop them from filling their mouth.
@n1les my degus only bite the cage if they are seriously bored and lack stimulation... remember they are naturally burrowing creatures who like to explore in the day - an empty cage depresses them... if you fill the cage with tunnels (to simulate a burrow), a large wheel, plenty of levels/toys then the cage-biting stops and they are much happier
thats so weird my degu was the best...he always ran up to the cage door to get rubbed, even if it was just through the bars beore i left. i guess mine was nice? and i used to put him on my shoulder and he'd chill under my ear in like the little crook there...huh...
Cute!! Mine does that to when you scratch him under his belly :D But not like this one. Mine cant stand when you touch the top of his head and runs away.
How on Earth did you get him to keep so still? My sister has two Degu's and they're a pair of absolute nutters, the moment the cage door is open they both jump out! Such a hand full!
Best thing to do, is to never grab them while they're in their cage or they'll be frightened of your hand. Whenever I want mine to come out, I just open the door and curiosity usually gets the better of them! They've learnt if they wanna come out, they have to sit in my hand :) Give it a go.
It's a matter of what your degu associates with you and your hand. It seems like you're nervous with them since they nibble tentatively rather than bite like they're in danger. Do you handle them much? It just sounds like they treat you like they treat someone they just met (2 degus in a pet store just reacted the same way to me). If you're patient with them, calm and slow, they'll learn you're never a threat. Then when they're really comfortable with you, things like this are easy.
yea...try to talk to them often, theyll start whistling for attention when they dont recieve it...anyways degu is such a nice and fun creature...much more powerd up than a hamster
that Degu is bending over backwards for you to scratch it. i had a hampster but my friends Degu is amazing. i hear some bite? i find that nonsense because every time i go to see him and his Degu, it never thinks of biting. had Tsnumai every bit you?
cute my sister is thinking about getting 3 of them when her 2 rats die after my fish die im getting a liizard and after that a frod or turtle or a degu most likely a degu
wenn ich solche käfige sehe könnt ich echt kotzen -.- es ist einfach nur bescheuert wie manche leute einfach die degus halten -.- nen käfig mit plastikunterschale ist nix für die ;)
well i had a degu before and i kept him alone and he did the same cute thing, but then i had 2 female degu and they didnt even like to touch them and now i hade 2 male and they dont do this cute thing either at least they like a little cuddle :) in my opinion only lonely degus do this..maybe just experience:) but anyway cute video:)
Just got back from the state of Nevada and checked out a petstore that sold many exotic animals (that are not sold or legal to keep as a pet in my state).Saw many of these Degus for just twenty bucks.Great deal for an animal that's originaly from South America.
Hey, I'm like getting one tomorrow & I have an old guinea pig hutch would that do, like it's big & wide/long not that high though. What do you think? It's made of wood.
wat is a degu? im getting a chinchilla tomorrow! they look KINDA similar except the chins have more softer and more fur and they have a shorter and fater tail and there bigger then degus to..but im still not sure wat a degu is.
That's the primary difference between a degu and a rodent, right there. Degus are highly social, bond with people and crave physical contact and other forms of affection.
can you please tell me how you managed to tame your degu so well I've got one to the point where she doesn't mind to be stroked as long as she's occupied with food!! but none of my four seem to enjoy being handled or touched.
Hi, there are lots of ways to tame degus (always better done if they are young) but one that I find very helpful is just let them run around a room with a closed door and play with them! (Make sure all of your wires and things that you would prefer left unchewed are up off of the ground) You can also offer them treats when they crawl on your hands (like peanuts ONCE IN AWHILE, or sweet potatoe as often as they want).
But all it comes down to is the amount of time you are willing to spend with them and the energy you have when interacting with them. Hope that helps!
What a cutie!!! I love my degus too, they're not quite that friendly yet though. How hard was it to train him? My degus mostly let me pet them when they're sleeping. They're just so adorable!
They are very funny little pets, a friend of mine recently got one, and its really fun just to watch them run around. Nice to a see a small animal with a personality, i pet my friends cat like that all the time, and whenever you stop, its the same look on their face "Why did you stop?". Funny little creatures they are.
Calling all degu experts, I need a little medical advice, can you watch my video Prozac Isn't Feeling Too Well? If you know what's up with him, please, I'm begging you, message me! He has me worried.
Hey, I don't want to sound rude or anything, but please tell me that your ultra-cute degu has a friend(s). I know Scritches seems happy, but all Degus should live gregariously (in groups) or they could get depressed and die.
i a=have a whale just like urs :)

It's made of wood.
abcjbc 2 years ago
I'm sorry, but i think that isn't good enough, degus need a high cage, so they could run around and climb.

wat is a degu? im getting a chinchilla tomorrow! they look KINDA similar except the chins have more softer and more fur and they have a shorter and fater tail and there bigger then degus to..but im still not sure wat a degu is.
santababie69 2 years ago
They are a rodent, closely related to chinchillas. But as you noticed, smaller and not quite as fluffy.

something is wron here u keep them seperate? thats a bad idea they have to keep them with mate
matstripe18 2 years ago
Probably this video was recorded while they weren't adjusted to eachother.
It's also possible that they're of the opposite sex, which would be bad.
alkafrazin 2 years ago
That's the primary difference between a degu and a rodent, right there. Degus are highly social, bond with people and crave physical contact and other forms of affection.

hes cute he likesa be petted like my kitty kitty hehehe

yeah.. my degus also don't like to be handled. I think it is because this one lives alone... i have 3 girls in one cage..

My degus don't like me to handle them :( what can i do to get them to let me stroke them
dave486 2 years ago
Its very easy to tame one but when you've got 2 in the same cage they usually look after each other and groom themselves.

GabbyGasoline 2 years ago
can you please tell me how you managed to tame your degu so well I've got one to the point where she doesn't mind to be stroked as long as she's occupied with food!! but none of my four seem to enjoy being handled or touched.
swisstony123 3 years ago
Hi, there are lots of ways to tame degus (always better done if they are young) but one that I find very helpful is just let them run around a room with a closed door and play with them! (Make sure all of your wires and things that you would prefer left unchewed are up off of the ground) You can also offer them treats when they crawl on your hands (like peanuts ONCE IN AWHILE, or sweet potatoe as often as they want).
cantfindthespacebar 2 years ago
But all it comes down to is the amount of time you are willing to spend with them and the energy you have when interacting with them. Hope that helps!
cantfindthespacebar 2 years ago
always let the degu come to you. Never try and corner them to pick them up. Just be patient.
smeemummy 2 years ago
i like your degus
verycooljake 3 years ago
I can only handle my Degu's for a few seconds when i take them in and out of their balls. They're too jumpy! How did you get your Degu to be so tame?
Lancat89 3 years ago
What a cutie!!! I love my degus too, they're not quite that friendly yet though. How hard was it to train him? My degus mostly let me pet them when they're sleeping. They're just so adorable!
walnuttx 3 years ago
