I would put in Tier 2 category Harry Gregson Williams and Danny Elfman too.

Giacchino is THE composer of the 21st century, first trained musically on videogames, and the epic scores and blockbusters of the past yet Giacchino still respects "the quiet moment" when it is appropriate and can deliver a blast of adrenaline as well.

As soon as James Horner, the composer of Avatar starts with original new written music, he'll surely win on oscar in the next years. The guy makes incredible music, but its all been done before in previous work of him. Giacchino brings everytime something amazing and completly new! Well deserved! The best composer of the moment i'd say!

What I love best about Michael Giacchino, isn't the sound of his music, or the emotions behind it. Its his adaptability. He is the only one that could do both the soundtrack for 'Up' as well as 'Mechwarrior' He's a true musical genius.
