  • Did they just not have a camera on the left side? I really wanted to see more of Brent. Especially when he was singing and soloing

  • this is awesome!

  • oh my god what are these beautiful sounds they produce!!!! fuckin majestical.

  • Since these shows they've all really stepped up their vocals. Especially Troy, Brann just needed more practice singing lead while playing, Brent's screams are savage, no longer sounds like a dying cat, he still can't sing that well though =/

  • i really like troy's vocals, and brann's too

  • they all look like pirates

  • their vocals are perfect for sludge metal, it makes it complete, they are a perfect band who works together to form godly songs

  • I like how Brent should be singing an octave lower than he does here. Lets all face the truth of it, people. The vocals in Mastodon live are absolutely atrocious. You think they don't know that? They just don't care. haha

  • @whoareyou134 Brents is. Sounds like... Something. Not like his studio stuff anyway haha. Troy does a pretty good job live.

  • Troy sings really well in this but he makes it look painful

  • Deftones used to be my favorite band, and now mastodon just took its place.

  • Troy's the one that is lacking the most in my opinion.

  • @TimeOutify Mastodon is only lacking in unoriginality, stupidity, and lameness.

  • @lifebayne Haha I heard that! But it doesn't stop Troy sounding a little bit flat... xD

  • Not everyone is Ronnie Dio. I love him but i like dissonance is voices. Shows.......emotion.......you can relate to it. The vocals match the songs. Which by the way, the guitar tones........heavy.

  • i been a fan of mastodon for a long time and this cd is by far the best....EVER...GODS KNEEL TO MASTODON..and i love how Bill i think is always just doing is his thing.....looking down

  • i been a fan of mastodon for a long time and this cd is by far the best....EVER...GODS KNEEL TO MASTODON..and i love how Bill i think is always just doing is his thing

  • I think now god listens to Slayer and Mastodon :D

  • I think now god listens to Salayer and Mastodon :D

  • This is definitely the best vocal performance from the bassist I've seen.

  • You guys should go to their website... Mastodonrocks The preview of the Live album from the Aragon Ballroom is on their and its how they usually sound live. I have seen them a couple times now in Chi town, including that particular time, and they have never sounded bad. I agree they are a little off on some of the videos on youtube, but watch the actual live ones from concerts. I dont even think there is an audience in this one, probably hard to get amped for cameras ....

  • man im sorry i love this song and all but holy fuck the bassist needs to not to try so hard when he sings. shit...

  • @xXyourmomsballsXx Im surprised you indentified Troy. I always feel like Brent (the one on the left) is just seconds away from exploding when he's singing. TBF though he's had god knows how many throat infections.

  • i think it's a great song. it's nice to that theres so many singers in one song.

  • 4 people are lost in oblivion

  • got a live eargasm!

  • Troy sounds a lot better in this than when they played this song on Letterman...

  • goddamn, I admired Brann Dailor before because of his fills and energy, but I can't believe he actually SINGS while playing something like that!! D: My jaw is still on the floor... amazing!! I actually really like Troy's singing too, especially considering the bass line he's playing at the same time! (in the prechorus)

Plus, his beard is epic \m/

  • drummer kicks fucking ass...the king!!!

  • bill is the shit.

  • everyone sounds good, but Troy sounds like he's strained and tense. I probably would be tense and strained too if I was playing live, but he needs to loosen up a little.

  • can someone tell me what exactly the star and crescent decal on brents guitar is? nowhere on the internet is it mentioned and i want one for my own guitar to pay homage to him.

  • 4 people are morons.

  • @baronestodon haha yea four pussys

  • @baronestodon agreed

  • Man, that bass sounds good.

  • gah. i love this band so much. they are so unique, in a beautiful way.

  • stupid camera man couldve focused a little more on brett during the solo...

  • they sound best doing the gravelly vocals of the leviathon era!

  • ha... I can actually hear the bass on this version! Nice

  • Definitely one of the best Prog Metal bands out there.

  • Falling from grace cause I've been away too long

Leaving you behind with my lonesome song..

    EPIC!!

  • me encanta

  • Gibson Les Paul silverburst, my wet dream of a guitar!

  • Wonderful! Now to just find this song in good quality live in front of an audience. Can't seem to find it!

  • MY favorite group to come out in a long time

    1. Tool

    2. Opeth

    3. Down

    4. Mastadon

5.................Kingdom of sorrow has a good album,

    6. RUSH.... for they are the oldest rockers who kick younger bands asses

,,,,,,,,they are on fire.........Machine Head is killler

    7. Artimus Pyledriver rocks .....if we hung out we woould get on!!!!!!!!

    WEEEEED and BBBBEEEEEERRS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @PaulP1972 so insane my fav modern bands are tool then mastodon then opeth

  • @PaulP1972 Try listening to meshuggah and tesseract

  • @primusfeces

Not that the comment was for me but thanks for Tesseract. Good stuff.

  • @PaulP1972 I see you love progressive =D

  • What are people complaining about the vocals on this doesn't sound bad at all, in matter of fact it sounds pretty good. You don't need to be spot on with a album for stuff to sound good. Thats not what music is about. They are unique and they do stuff their own way which is great. Love this band. Mastodon RULES !..!,

  • @jgurxp They have a real ethereal sound to them, especially the vocals, that, like a good narcotic, keeps me wanting more.

  • This venue seems to have really bad audio recording technology... looking at those Les Pauls and Marshalls... and then hearing this quality of sound... Going by their success staying in key this is a good performance but I bet most of the sound was lost to the shitty recording.

  • yeah dude, this is actually awesome on the vocals, i mean... sure they may not be like perfect... but props to them at least being on key, together, and unique. amazing musicians right there. who else sounds like mastodon? -noone. that's why i love these guys.

  • Still, it is puzzling how a band can have vocals so poorly performed live.

Please don't get me wrong, I really like their last album, really, but I've yet to find an "Oblivion" version here on youtube where the vocals are decent.

Their music is very intricate, specially some harmonies, and the vocal line should hold it together and make the underlying harmony meaningful but in these live performances the vocals are really distracting.

  • @diyagogo actually they sound pretty good here. Brann seems to have problems in some videos but he nails it here. Same with Brent and Troy.

  • These guys are bringing back REAL music.

  • @NightmarishDreams Real music hasn't gone anywhere. It just stopped being popular in the 90's

  • Check out 4:00 to 4:45 it's probably some of the best music ive heard in a long time. Mastodon should have everyone's respect.

  • SHIT stay in the solo!!!

  • being so different from all the other metal bands makes mastodon so fkn cool...there is a such a vibe coming off this band, its crazy, an ambience that is creepy and cool..definitely one of the best bands out right now

  • i saw these guys in pittsburgh back in april and then at rock on the range in columbus in may. both times they kicked so much ass it wasnt even funny.

  • the singing is off in this video, but if you have ever seen mastodon in a true live environment (club, festival, not a tv show) you know that there vocals are always spot on. they are the best heavy metal band in the world right now, even better than opeth i think.

  • I like how talented they are and I love the CD, but sadly it just doesn't go over good live being that it is so difficult to play and sing at the same time. I bet they will get better over time though and get it perfected over the numerous tours they go on.

  • 2:27 sounds like he saying LULZ then Lol xD

  • yup but there saying lost lol

  • crazy ass bass sound at about 4:03

  • the only thing that pissed me off about this video is that they had a close up on every one else but the guitar player during his solo...lets see him rip!

  • no other band sounds like mastodon, thats what makes them so badaass!

  • yeah the singing is far from perfect. altough the viking nails pretty well in this vid. the drummer sings very well, obviously he sounds agitated and because of that he doesn't hit some notes, but overall is pretty good. I challenge you: try to sing this while running! it's though

  • They sosososososooooooooooooooooooo BADLY need a singer.

  • @nishy100

Either that or just go back to there old stuff.

  • @nishy100 the entire band consists of singers

  • @ShadowCrowX

Yeah but they fail when they sing live because of that.

  • @nishy100 wrong!!!! they are not pro singers, but they sound unique!!!! and I think that makes them and awesome band!!

  • The transition between "Tell you I failed" and "Falling from grace" sucks a bit in live performances.

  • Their vocals are awesome live...trust me i saw em a few weeks back

  • this was an awesome album though a big change from there older stuff. Cant wait for there new album!

  • Brent sounds awesome here. Sometimes he can be bad.

  • Singing's hard work, but when your playing another instrument this fucking good, especially the drums, in a different timing to the rhythm of the song, sometimes, when you're performing, hell, being filmed, you're not always gonna be 100% sounding like the record. These guys have got it right, especially with this newest album, it rocks!

  • Great effort. It is so difficult to match a recorded as apposed to a live concert different frame of minds and pressure may have been a harder day for the individual I find live version very unique and I always prefer a live version to see the different range all things considered this is a great video.

  • Brents vocals are very good live, but troy can not reach the high pitched as on the recording.

  • the studio recording for brent's voice sounds so different.

    troy has such a kickass voice, my god . . . .!!!

  • i know, he sounds like an old lady

  • no it was november when they were co-heading with dethklok*****

  • the vocals were 100 times better when i saw them back in april of '09

  • they have exxcellent vocals. the drummer is amazing. everyone is.

  • I think the vocals are awesome. Sure they aren't professional singers but to me, they succeed to create a very special ambiance with their singing and it fit pretty well to the music.

  • Vocals in mastodon are like another instrument. You are correct in saying that music isn't just singing.

  • @Yo9Rock7Roll you said it right man

  • @Yo9Rock7Roll I agree. not great singers but still good singing

  • @Yo9Rock7Roll Im sorry but I dont agree. Sure the vocals sound awesome on the record, but here they are in pain, especially troy. Anyway, I know that everybody is not Dio ;)

  • @Yo9Rock7Roll Im sorry but I dont agree. Sure the vocals sound awesome on the record, but here they are in pain, especially Troy. Anyway, I know that everybody is not Dio ;)

  • @Yo9Rock7Roll I couldnt agree with you more, good sir. They rock, hands up. Deal with it peeps.

  • @Yo9Rock7Roll I agree dude, their singing matches the rhythms they play to. Even if their not great singers, its better to have singing that matches the key of the rhythm then to be off key and be called a "professional" singer

  • I find it pretty cool how pretty much all of the members contribute to the vocals. Amazing band, i'd love to see them live.

  • the cameraman fucked up. wanted to see close up of Hinds solo..

  • FOR REEEEEEEEEEEEEAL!!!!!!!!!!! i blew a gasket when I couldn't see it too!!!

  • man we just need bill to do some lead vocals now and we're all set

  • Precisely dude

  • Man, Troy looks like he's in pain in all of their performances, he really puts everything into those vocals.

  • i think they sound pretty damn good

  • the reason there voices in these are as some ov u say "less than perfect"is most likely cause they havnt had a warm up before they played, or just a small 1, kuz 2 hit those high notes, its really only easy/possible when youve warmed up ur vocals enuf.cant wait 2 c them at the BDO!

  • No, actually, in the vast vast majority of videos of them performing, I never find their vocals to be anything spectacular live. This is the best performance I think I have seen of this song though.

  • It's not about listening to opera or wanting "clean vocals" we like mastodon in the studio and we want to hear the same awesome stuff live, that's it

  • What the hell are you talking about?

  • Sorry there not Tori amos LOL Maybe go back to listening to britney or paris :D

  • fuck yeaa thtz true dude...haha

  • lol gud call 10 points

  • You're stupid... Mastodon is wonderful!!!

  • quiet crowd in this vid :P

  • troy needs to learn how to sing properly. it makes him sound like shit restraining his voice like that. and it sounds like hes singing holding his tongue back.

  • It is the song is to high for Troy.

  • I saw them recently at the HOB. The vocals were all tracked. They were perfect just like the cd. When they finished playing " Crack the Skye" and started playing all previous material, the whole sound changed and the vocals were, let's say, less than perfect . Regardless , i love this band and think they're producing music way more interesting than most.

  • no u

  • seriously who downed this comment? It's completely true, but they do have good instrumental abilities that I like.

  • brent and their drummer performed very well when I saw them last night, it wasn't like in this video.

  • maybe it's because it's the first time in many years that a band hasn't used autotune live...

  • i wish i could see them in Italy without metallica being headliner ...

  • mashing sound

but the vocals sound like they are singing through their asses...

  • yeah, but it's pretty hard to sing good and play an instrument at the same time, especially when they play the more complicated riffs.

  • Fucking love it!

  • Just got tickets to go see them and dethklok in houston 11/12, gonna be so bad ass

  • Dude I'm jealous.

  • I just saw them and dethklok in New York..... it was more than badass. They are also playing with high on fire and converge.... converge is pretty bad.

  • O my god I saw Dethklok and Mastodon in Columbus, and yes Converge was horrible

  • hey, how long did dethklok play for, cause i saw a setlist for an earlier concert, and it didnt look like they were playing very long

  • They definitely played for quite a while. I was there at Chicago, where you would think Mastodon would play longer, but i think they played exactly what their previous setlist (main and encore) was, and it did not detract from Dethklok's time on stage.

  • Agreed. Converge seemed to have a part in every song where the singer went "Ra, Ra.....RA!"

  • That was every part of every song, High on Fire wasn't bad though.

  • This song is wickedly haunting.

  • HOW THE FUCK CAN THE DRUMMER SING AND PLAY LIKE THAT!?

    awesome!

    lmao

  • he is the epitome of epic, thats how

  • Do you realize how hard it is to drum and sing at the same time? Props to Brann!

  • @iceheadstudios I agree! So hard play MASTODON's DRUM, MASTODON's BASS, MASTODON's GUITAR and sing the same time!!

  • @iceheadstudios no doubt dude. i agree

  • @iceheadstudios tell me about it

  • @iceheadstudios Playing drums and sing at the same time ain't so hard, I can do that... the tricky thing is to sing good while smashing those skins... And I'm talking from experience...

  • brent is the best guitarist ever...

  • Divinations totally kicks ass live during that performance...singing and musically, just like the album.

  • Fuck there is something really good about this band....

  • their vocals may not be the best but these guys can play fucking awesome their riffs are amazing

  • i cant wait to see them in october this is the shit

  • When are you seeing them? I'm going on Saturday.

  • oct 23rd itll be my first time seein em

  • just saw them last night, you will not be disappointed!

  • saw them yesterday? how many people were there?

  • yeah i saw em, they were amazing. i was at Roy Wilkins, which is a relly small venue, there were a few thousand there, it was packed nonetheless.

  • Awesome, I was there too. Such an insane show!

  • do you go see Mastodon?

its sould out? how many people will be there?

  • All the vocals from Crack The Skye just aren't meant to be sung live...

However, these guys play some great fucking music.

  • ATTA BOY BRANN.

  • Does Bill ever sing?

  • Birchmen.

  • Blood and Thunder, Birchmen, etc...

  • His vocals or his guitar? Cause honestly the vocals sound great...the guitar may be a little too loud for a few people, but I think it sounds great...

  • Saw them live in Greece Rockwave Festival along with Slipknot.Mastodon was the best live i've ever seen..

  • brann is a badass but they are all pretty good.

  • love the song... but didn't like the vocals in this live version.

  • This is the Letterman rehearsal, yeah? This is perfect. Fuckin perfect. I love Brent x 1000. Wot an awesome band!

  • this band is so sick. can't wait for their new album "Armaggedon" coming in september of 2010!

  • is that really true? you're not bullshittin'??where did you hear anything like that?

  • lol just kiddin but it does sound like a mastodon album name

  • pure fucking win

  • Brann has the best live vocals in this band haha. They're still all amazing.

  • too bad the Letterman Performance wasn't this good. these guys fucking rock.

  • Cant wait till october, i get to see them and dethklok live!

  • I'm really impressed with how articulate the drummer is and how wildly impressive he can make the drums fit into the theme of the album. Only other drummer I know of that makes me awe over how spectacular the drums are is Danny Carey. Crazy shit.

  • The drumming that Danny does on the song H always blew me away. someone pretty much summed it up by saying that Danny doesn't need arms he can drum with his mind. He's a machine. Gotta note that Chris Adler is also one of my favorites. Awesome leg work.

  • love this song

  • I bet you look like crap.
