If you want to become a designer you are going to need better tools. Trade your #2 pencil for some hb leads and mechanical pencils. Get a "neaded" eraser. You probably already have all that stuff. In college, you'll need everything under the sun just for the experience of using all the different mediums.
Actually the tools he's using are what professional designers use. A number 2 pencil for the sketch, (as long as its not mechanical) and prismacolour markers. Those really are the basics you need. The only thing I would suggest is to get Prismacolour White and Black pencils and a white gel pen for those hotspots.
