I love Bon Iver because he not only challenges himself as a writer but he challenges us as listeners. You can take this song and sort of make it your own, which i love. its like the song holds so many stories. Bon Iver will always be a legend to me.
The lyrics fleetingly refer to my home town, Eau Claire, Wi. The old house at 3rd and Lake really did burn down, and the sound of low flying winter geese is eerily replicated by the horn section. Beautiful, haunting tune.
@purplefacedmonkey1 it's the time transpired since the Ice Age and it refers to the birth and development of civilization. You can look it up on Google.
@purplefacedmonkey1 apparently its the name given to the past several thousand years of life on earth, so its like, all recorded history and everything. I think thats what the song's about, like those moments when you realise your just a tiny part of something massive, and 'not magnificent'.
I have never understood going out of your way to criticize other peoples music... you don't like it... we do.... so go listen to what you like.

Beautiful live version. There are strains of Mark Hollis (Talk Talk) in this version. Subtle, intricate, acoustic, sensitive.
