5160 is good stuff but a pita to forge. 1084 is nicer. I like making my pattern-welded stuff out of 1084 and L6. OTOH, if you do your heat-treat right with 5160, you can make a sword that's damn near unbreakable.
if you a rich and fortunate enough to own a backyard, have all of those tools including the gas pipe then this process is easy. if you are stuck in an apartment without all that what are you supposed to do?
@epicfantasy Epic, how long does it usually take to heat it to correct temperature. I'm a teenaged aspiring blacksmith, and any advice would be GREATLY appreciated. Where would I get my metal? What can I substitute for an anvil? Where would my coals be? A pit? Would a high grade grill work? Thanks!
@xbeast133 ten to 20 minutes. Depends on the fire and the metal/thickness. Amazon has the metal, links on my website too. A piece of railroad track works as an anvil. you need a setup with an airblower into it. pit, grill, doesnt matter as long as it has the air blower setup.
@epicfantasy disregard somehow my response to another video ended up here i had watched one where a guy was using sheet metal and just forge welded it all together didnt fold or draw out and cut it to shape
aww look how it glows red it`s so cute xD Im gona kiss it.... Hey, just wondering how Do i actually locate Iron ore in the ground and how do i tell what kind of metal it is.. please im so curious to know.
@gustaverds dunno, that is probably quite an interesting a fun project though. wouldn't that be cool to mine and refine the ore first, then make a sword?
@gustaverds Iron ore is usually black, generally I don't know where to find it even though I think you can scrape the ground and get it or use gold panning which would take a lot of time when you can buy steel for dirt cheap basically anywhere. 2 cents a pound is what it trades for. You would then either have to make a molded sword which are never very good from a clay mould, or make ingots which are squares. then you would heat and hammer the squares into thinner metal for forgn
Hey man, I was looking up the whole things, and noticed you didn't really say much about the anvil, so I've looked some up and saw that the sizes really go around, 60kg, 25kg, etc... Which kind of anvil is more apropriate for this? The biggest the better? Thx...
@epicfantasy Ho, there... What about those blacksmiths that heat metal to the point it becomes molten metal and then spill it into a sword mold, so that the sword becomes that exact shape? Can you tell me what are those molds made of? And is that a common method? Sorry if the question seems silly xD
@halfassedfart So you're saying that NO SWORD has ever been made by smelting? Because that was my question, about the smelting and the molds... Where did you evenr ead the word "cast"? =P
@CountyRedNeck lol, no. It isnt much of a forge but it works well. The tube is just for the airflow and I use real lump hardwood charcoal. Hardwood lump coal works well . Not as good as real coal but still good. I have a vid here somewhere that shows theforge and how it is built, how it works.
@epicfantasy My brother makes knives and nails, and he has some expensive things he says I need if I want to make ANY of this. Is that true? Can I simply create a stainless steel sqaure that is thick, or do I have to get an anvil? Either way, my budget is 200-400$ every 2 weeks, so I can not afford a 500$ anvil. Help?
@GrapeFlavor12 You can improvise a whole lot of stuff when it comes to blacksmithing. Scrap metal, make a little forge. You can do this within budget to get yourself started. As you get better, learn more you will want better stuff. don't let anybody discourage you.
why do stock removal? they don't have a SOUL like forged blades do. Yes, I have forged a few swords, even pattern welded ones (with and without power tools).
thanks for making a tutorial about this. the only other one on youtube is for a wooden sword !

halfassedfart 2 months ago
@HanSollo cast is the word for molded metal and steel is hard to cast because of its hight melting point and cast is brittle and heavy

MR0KITTY 6 months ago
@MR0KITTY Company called Starrett, Available on amazon. just search for 01 steel. You can also go to junkyards. Get some leaf springs from cars. Works really well.
epicfantasy 6 months ago
@epicfantasy Leaf springs can be a pain for sword making though. They usually tend to be thicker than necessary and are harder to work with. 0-1 tool steel is one of the better steels for starting sword making. It has good edge retention, and heat treating is quite easy and forgiving. Sharpening it is a bit of a pain because it is a harder steel, so if you're using a grinding wheel it will chew through your stones.
It's a good choice for a strong sword that you won't have to sharpen often.
