  • i sing better than david lee roth

  • Love to hear that early Eddie tone and the origins of his much loved style .........

  • This is one of my favorite songs of all-time from Rainbow with Ronnie James Dio on voclas but if I heard this version first I would not have liked it. Eddie is great on guitar but David Lee Roth live on this song is really bad and I like Dave too especially in his prime.

  • David Lee Joke

  • I think it's a cool Rainbow cover.

As for folks dogging DLR, his autobio, 'Crazy From the Heat' is a must-read. The guy's a fantastic entertainer, Dave TV was awesome. And let's face it, he's far better than, 'I only do ballads' cherub, Hagar.

If it weren't for Satriani completing Chickenfoot, their sound would be a combination of the always crummy Jimmy Buffett and 'burn in AM hell' Jackson Browne.. hahaha

It can be argued VH's, 'On Fire' and/or 'Atomic Punk' is heavy rock or metal..

  • Nice. Imagine this with a big Hammond in the background. I bet Eddie did.

  • Nice stuff Ed! Even Blackmore would agree!

  • fuck all of u dave haters

  • Dave just isn't the best singer... HOWEVER, he is one of the most engaging rock frontmen ever. The man puts on a show. Gotta love him. I'd rather watch Dave sing live than Madonna lip sync a Half Time show any day of the week!

  • david was david

  • Well, at least the guitar is amazing, the same can't be said for the vocals. The vocals sound like karaoke night. Without his athletics, DLR would be lucky to get a job as the door man at this bar....

  • Ronnie is wincing in his grave. I saw VanHalen live with Roth, with Sammy and Roth on his own. I'm telling you all....David Lee Roth CAN'T SING LIVE and he never could! I love VanHalen.......Roth just sucks!

  • @mr300deluxe It's a known fact that he can't sing, like the story of the Emporer's New Clothes; everyone gets it; like an unwritten joke that everyone is in on, except the guy himself, but it passes as singing anyway, yet in many ways he made the band famous.

  • they never sound like the band their covering they only sound like VAN HALEN

  • @kaan318 as a music fan, in my opinion: your horrible.

  • That was nice!

  • Hilarious that Roth comes in too early at the beginning. Cool track though.

  • when dio does this song the hair on the back of my neck stands up ,with these guys nothing.....bluck.

  • This is awesome Van Fuking Hallen Doing A Dio Raimbow Song!!! More power to Fucking Ronnie!!!!! Dio inspired millions even Lars from Metallica and so many more that dont realy go out and say it, even if there is many others that have made it public that Dio influence and inspired them! long live the king!

  • VH were not interested in or capable of being a cover band who were faithful to the original versions of the songs they covered. With Roth's limited vocal range & tendency to improvise the lyrics and Eddie's nitro-fueled guitar style, they played everything their own way and rarely came close to sounding like the original version of whatever song they were playing . The closest I've heard in that department is 'The Fool and Me' by Robin Trower, where Eddie nails Trower almost dead-on.

  • As a Dio fan, a Rainbow fan, a VH fan... I liked it. It's a board mix from 1976 - keep it in perspective.

  • As a DIO fan; my opinion: it's totally horrible..

  • @kaan318 Yeah, but considering they're 20 years old and at the beggining of their career, it's pretty good. 15 years go by and Eddie's officially a genius.

  • everyone slow their role!!..what you are hearing is halen clawing their way up...they busted their ass doing shitty covers like this for years...i mean you cant compare this to todays upstarts...today we have auto tune..over use of reverb..chorus..and so on...my girl friend says she hates music live..she likes studio version better..someone slap her!!

  • C'mon guys give 'em a break.

  • Ugh... just... no.

  • VEDERVÄRDIGT!!!

  • the worst crap i've ever heard - they wouldn't have got a weekend gig at my local bar - absolute garbage !!

  • @MrFunkyBone just shows how much you know about life and music then dude! They are young here! you where probably still strugelin' with fuckin' bra straps at this point in your life dude and these guys are kickin' fuckin' ass!!

  • OMG!! DAVE STFU!!!!!

  • エ!エディがリッチーを弾いている・・・・

    何か嬉しい!!

    SOLOは様式美もへったくれも無いけど、まさにエディ版のスタイル(^。^;

  • The drumming is more awful than vocals... not by much. horrid horrid cover.

  • Yikes. I didn't even think it was DLR singing it until about 1:15.

Left me saying, "Guys! What the hell were you thinking?" Truly awful!

  • Shite!

  • amazing,,,,,,, deadly guitar work, fuckin Eddie already had a grasp of the electric guitar ,,, wow

  • To put the time period into more perspective, In 1976 Hendrix was dead but Elvis was still alive, Ozzy was still with Black Sabbath, Johnnie Taylor's "Disco Lady" was the top single.

  • a recording straight of the soundboard, awesome!!! even without the gloss imagine how wicked this must have sounded in the tightly packed club this was recorded at!!!!

  • Eddie's solo on this track totally smokes Blackmore's orignial.

  • If Dio heard this he would roll over in his grave

  • Is your heading picture from the 1975-1976 era? Eddie looks like a 16 yr old. Sometimes it's hard to imagine that such a young person could change the musical world in such an incredible way. No matter what others have done since him, he's the predecessor. I'm glad he switched over to guitar, and I'm glad Alex switched over to drums. Amazing dedicated musicians.

  • THE Greatest Rock-n-Roll Band in history.

    ..not Rainbow, but Van Halen.

  • I bet they didn't actually play this song very often... Attitude is full 10

  • somehow i keep hearing "god of thunder" when i listen to this

  • Who the fuck played the drums here??????

  • Definitely no looping for Blackmore; part of his trademark sound was an old Aiwa reel-to-reel taperecorder which he used both for boost (it replaced his Hornby Skewes treble booster) and echo! Absolutely no loops or prior recorded takes, just echo. Look on the internet for the forum of John "Dawk" Stillwell, his guitar technician of that time.

  • back at seymour he is looping with a 8 track be cause i have a video of this going on and if you get the cd live of rainbow you can hear as richie is doing so because the leads are diff untill he loops,,i have had 3 lead guitar players watch this and we all came up with the same,,YES HE IS

  • @ThePearldemon post the footage ...but this debate is a very old one ...i stand by what i say - look into tape delay ...if you can play like blackmore {and i can play everthing he does } you have NO NEED to loop !

  • awesome club action before the big hair days! SoCal VH was rockin way ahead of the times even before their day!

  • it is hard to copy blackmore as he is looping the leads on this song on a 8track reel too reel,,a freind gave me a old video and you can see blackmore looping that is crazy for back in them days

  • @ThePearldemon No - he was not looping - it was a tape delay . Who told you such nonsense ?

  • they should put this on the new cd coming it would be..... ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh fckin awsome

  • And it probably sounded BETTER if you were there!!! This is HISTORY!! Anyone who knocks this is just an as**ole!

  • Yeah, you can tell they have talent and will eventually pull it together, AND, the guitar playing is excellent for young kids. But, they really did a bad job on this song. Well, Dave did anyway.

  • David Lee Roth is a good singer, but he butchered this song. I'm not putting Roth down...Just pointing out how awesome Dio was!

  • There is just something wrong about this guitar and frankenstrat. The frankenstrat is supposed to be the first hybrid guitar thats a strat body with a double coil. This guitar is in 1976 showing a strat with a humbucker. Is this photo before he built the famous red and white frankenstrat.

  • @jims3666 Eddie built his original black and white frankie in '74. He also had another strat, a '58 I think, that he had cut a humbucker into. He mentions it in several interviews and said that even after he had put the humbucker into the guitar that it still sounded weak, which might be why there aren't more pictures of him with it.

  • @TNMinuteMan Thanks for the information about the guitars.....jim

  • @jims3666 Im not sure but I think before eddie there was andy scott /sweet/ who put humbucker on strat.

  • Quite enjoyed that.

  • listening to this reminds me of god of thunder by kiss for some reason.

  • VERY INTERESTING PICTURE!!!! Eddie is playing a fender strat with a rosewood neck and a white humbucker. We believe the frankenstrat is the first with this modification but it has a maple fenderstyle neck with no name and a black humbucker. Is this the original before it was modified into frankenstrat or a different guitar?

  • @jims3666 no its i seperate guitar i think but eddie said he got the frankenstein body and neck from boogie bodies. and eddie had a gibson sticker on the headstock:)

  • Van Halen played a concert at our High School in 1976, and it was W - I - L - D ! ! !

Very raw, but also very energetic. There's a pic of the show in our '76 high school yearbook. Everyone who was there that afternoon still talks about it -- like I am right now! : D

  • If my calculations are correct, as of this recording, Eddie had been playing guitar for all of 3 years. :O

  • this is effin' Awesome! thanks so much!!!!!!!!!!!! I love any early VH! rippingly good!

  • I dig this. So garage band style.

  • LOL, I was 9 that year

    Timothy

    :o)

  • They were a Los Angeles Cover Band for a few years before they landed a contract.... those would have been fun gigs to go see (I was 12 when this recorded)

  • Look how young EVH looks

  • AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • filler

  • your no good was a great vh cover orinally by linda rhonstand

  • @smithdsmit "You're No Good" was originally recorded by Dee Dee Warwick in 1963, eleven years before Ronstadt did her own cover. The first popular version of the song was later in 1963 by Betty Everett.

  • Awesome find.

  • i love this band, but the song just isnt for them. i hate to play Simon but im not feeling it.

  • That's hilarious. It's horrible cover for anyone else, but Dave's got his own style. He can't even sing the melody correct, but who cares? Ed's solo is completely out of place in the song. It doesn't fit at all, it's just a wank fest. And again, it's them. They couldn't play covers well, they had too much of their own style. Which is ultimately a good thing.

  • @stratthead

    --

Dancing in the Streets, You Really got me are two covers they played well.

  • Hey man they were partyin when playin this, sounds okay.........but remember it's Van Halen not Rainbow..........Somebody get Me A Doctor.

  • Don't ever say he played like Hendrix? Ok - since I didn't, nor implied it.

Post-Hendrix, Pre-EVH. Get your head out of your ass.

  • @Ruefus jimi hendrix is great but eddie is the best and will always be the best

  • R.I.P. Ronnie James Dio

    whose favorite band was

    *******LED ZEPPELIN*******

  • @z1inspector

And Dio s favourite singer was Paul Mc Cartney .

  • Sweet rendition of this song. DLR nailed it! HAIL DIO!

  • @Adackione i hope ur kidding.......

  • at last

  • They sound exactly like they do on the demos they made a little while later. Even at this young age, Ed is holding his own easily on this Blackmore tune... only a shadow of the genius that was to come, though. Mike is rock solid as always. He can play anything with anyone and fit right in. It's hard to tell from the recording what Alex is doing at times, especially on the high hats, but he sounds great to me. DLR is a little off at times, but mostly good/great. VH rules my world.

  • christ, proof that van halen listened to blackmore.

  • Muttville all you do is sit here and bitch and complain on this video

if you don't like the cover then don't fucking come on the video

Van Halen was showing respect and paying tribute to Rainbow and Ronnie James Dio!

  • @OzzyVanHalen wrong again pimples, they are playing it because of Ritchie u young wanna b

  • i like it but DLR is just bad on this,Eddie sounds great for his age here love Deep Purple RIP DIO ,every one look what hard work can do for you if you keep with it they have come a long way baby

  • R.I.P. Dio

  • Amazing post!!! 5 stars!!! You're right - never seen this pic or heard this cut, and that's saying a lot! Ed's 21yrs old and already smoking every guitar player this planet has ever produced...

  • ouch....not.

  • DIO RIP

  • Lighten up people. Enjoy it for what it is ~ Van Halen the bar band.

  • I think it sounds good considering that it is recorded on tape and very old. Sorry digital recording wasn't popular yet! LOL

  • this is horrible.

  • Thank god Ed & Mike held down the fort. Al was 'still' playin guitar on the side at this point I'm guessin. & Dave, all I can say is once a hack always a hack! Love how he blew the intro.............what a clown wanna b

  • asistam !! muito legal ..

    /watch?v=fHBgt3cPiwk

    /watch?v=RUL9kuPbjYU

  • I dont think its that bad for a bar recording done in 1976! DLR has always sucked live anyways...

  • DLR is once again the weak link. What a worthless sack of shit.

The rest of it sounds pretty good.

  • The intention of paying a tribute to the great Ronnie Dio is quite respectful. However, Roth sounds terrible.

  • RESPECT!

  • Anyone paying attention? This is 1976. Two years BEFORE their first album debuted. Post-Hendrix, Pre-EVH era. The production on the recording doesn't exist. Virtually anyone would sound bad.

The band itself was only 4 years old, DLR only present for two years. Eddie was all of 21.

Slam 'em all you want after listening to 30+ years of EVH. As of this recording - they were still getting their shit together.

  • @Ruefus

    Exactly.

Live recording off the desk from a show hardly ever sounds good.

  • @Ruefus he never played like hendrix and dont ever say he did. he is trying to play like holdsworth and is sucking ass at it. and alex sucks at drums bad

  • @damphear2 eddie is doing fucking amazing what are you talking about and alex is a fucking monster on the drums also eddie has never sucked ass at playing guitar

  • @damphear2 fuck you bitch eddie is way fucking better than jimi hendrix i mean jimi is good but you cant even compare him to eddie he is the best and alex is a fucking monster on the drums he's up there with john bohnom from led zepplin and vinnie from pantera

  • @niclovesmusic your a fucking retard if you say that. alex is a fucking faggot on drums. zepplin is for faggots. and you bring up fagtera. only shows what you know about music. eddy cant even play any were near the speed and skill of holdsworth. let alone as clean.

  • @damphear2 fuck you bitch if you think this shit sucks then get the fuck off the video bitch cause van halen, led zepplin, and pantera are the best bands ever so shut the fuck up i bet your bitch ass likes faggot justin bieber

  • @niclovesmusic those bands suck ass and if you think there the best it only shows you know nothing about music let alone talent. please dont respond to this you dumb fuck

  • @damphear2 fuck you bitch if you think those bands suck it shows how much of a dumb fuck you are you little bitch so dont talk shit about music when you dont know shit about music you little faggot i bet your bitch ass likes that disney channel shit you faggot so you dont respond to this bitch

  • @niclovesmusic those bands are not music. there crap. lets seem hmm i have UK uploaded on my channel witch EVH went and saw live and pretty much is the reason why he plays like he does.

  • @Ruefus It's not any different than Elf doing a cover of War Pigs in '72. It's just another fabulous piece of metal history.

  • @Ruefus is it weird that i like the raw unedited sound?? haha :P

  • @Ruefus Very true!! Who here can say that THEY went from playing for less than 100 people to playing for over 1000s?

  • Alex sounds kind of green on this one

  • DLR Blows.

  • fucking terrible

  • Come on people -- Van Halen were an INCREDIBLE band, but this cover is TERRIBLE.

  • Awesome! Thanks so much for uploading this track, VH, flippin' edgy~love it! R.I.P RJD

  • Great Cover from one of the greatest rock band. RIP Ronnie, you'll be so missed by everyone but no one will forget such a great voice. Sad days for music...

  • That solo was really good. If you listen at 2:19 you can hear where Mr. Randy Rhoads probably got his idea for his little one handed eruption rip off that he did during his solo spots. Randy was great though. It's hard to believe that Dio is dead. I was shocked when I heard. My lame hard rock/metal station didn't even pay tribute to the man. I was expecting a full day of Dio songs. But, I didn't even get one.

  • @zackvanhalen i would 'probably' guess not fan boy.

  • @muttville1 Shut the fuck up. Oh that's right I'm such a fanboy. Of Randy or Eddie? Because if you weren't such a stupid judgemental dick, you'd know I pretty much like them both equally. There have been many VH videos online where I criticize Eddie's playing when it deserves it. Fan boys don't do that.

  • @zackvanhalen your name, your uploaded videos, & your 'attempt' at Ed's style of playing = fanboy! Sorry.........just calling it like it is son.

  • @muttville1 You obviously don't know what a fanboy is. A fanboy is someone who is obsessed with a group or person and will defend them no matter what. To the fanboy, the band can do no wrong. I am a big fan of VH. That much is true. But I am NOT a fanboy. As for my attempt of Ed's style the clips of me playing are mostly from like 3 years ago. The ones that are from last year have EVH licks but there are WAY more of my own licks in them. Believe me, I have my own songs and style outside of Ed.

  • @zackvanhalen whatever you say zach'vanhalen', fanboy extraordinaire!!

  • @muttville1 Ok, now you're just acting childish...like a "boy" boy.

  • Its Nice To Hear Van Halen paying tribute to the Metal Legend Ronnie James Dio

R.I.P Ronnie James Dio You Will Be Missed

    Great Cover By Van Halen!

  • @OzzyVanHalen It's amazing to think that Dio was a relatively new singer back then!

  • @OzzyVanHalen 1st off Noob this was a song they did because of Richie, 2nd besides Ed & Mike this cover is awful! Try & erase that big talkin pimple face!!
