  • One of my favourite movie moments ever

  • "at 9 years old i thought it was ok for my son to wet the bed" (disguises laugh as cough)

  • What if Iing Iing just wanted to buy shit?

  • 0:08 Seth Rogen in the background!

  • The teacher is visualising human emotion in one dimension (i.e. a line)

    D. Darko is visualizing human emotion in two dimensions (i.e. a field)

    D. Darko is more right, but there is a possibility of human emotion working on a 2.5 Dimension scale (i.e. New Super Mario Bros for the DS)

  • @BEASLAND000 Correction: D. Darko is *wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy* more right than the teacher

  • holy fuck 00:4 The dude grabbed that fat kid's ass.

  • AGREE. This sounds like the kind of thing I would do in that situation, except probably a bit less well-worded. Donnie Darko is the only film character I've ever been able to relate to.

  • This scene always bothered me. I love this movie but Donnie contradicts himself. From fear to love IS the spectrum of human emotion. .Ling-ling took the money because she was being greedy. Greed comes from the fact you feel you don't have enough. And That feeling comes from the fear of losing what you already have. But the teacher is still a bitch.

  • @monsterinyourpocket

Ling-Ling took the money because she couldn't learn to CHUT UP and go back to China.

  • Comment removed

  • @monsterinyourpocket That wasn't the point. He said he knew what to do, and yeah, he was wrong about the wallet thing, but everything isn't categorized into those 2 subjects

  • That depends if you want to apply a 2d moral system to emotion, which is a complex 3d explosion that I wouldn't say would be measured so simplistically.

  • @monsterinyourpocket good point! I loved this film too but its evident to anyone who can critically think, can see that this subplot to the film is poison. As characters created in the film that spread an understanding of fear and love are sickos. Giving justification to 'shoot the messenger' which in turn demonises the theories' credability due to character assassination and fictional corruption.

  • @monsterinyourpocket NO! This is about the fact you can not relate fear and love to morals. You may not feel fear of having nothing and still be greedy. Most rich people are BTW more greedy than poor people.

  • @monsterinyourpocket I've always been confused by "but keeps the money inside the wallet." Does that mean she kept the money inside the wallet when she returned it, or she kept the money from inside the wallet as in stole it? The "but" always made me think she stole it, but it was worded strangely. I'm probably just stupid :P And yes, after seeing this movie as an adult I feel like he didn't have a valid argument. Just a bratty teenager. Maybe that was the real gist of his character.

  • "Duh is a product of fear."

  • This is how I feel about the youtube like-dislike system..

  • the graph is supposed to be 3D.

  • fear is necessary. fear is a hell of motivator. Fear of being alone so we marry. fear of having no home no food so we get a job. fear of nothingness when we die so we worship a deity.

  • Although I quite liked this movie, I thought the dialogue was for the most part really badly written. Thumbs up if you disagree.

  • notice how she tried to SCARE him with getting a zero for the day..

  • I don't think you can classify what anyone else does as stemming from fear or love, however I do believe in the core concept that if you choose to live your life in love, positive results will follow. If you choose to live in your in fear, negative results will follow. If you wanna figure out if you live life in fear, what is your reaction when asked the hypothetical question "How would you feel if you were told the world was ending tomorrow?" If you embrace the concept, you are living in love

  • As fruity and ridiculous as this scene is, I agree. Fear and love, are the epitome of positive and negative.

  • @a4d2d0

that's the matter...it's not all neither positive nor negative

  • @FrenchKissPersia I still think it is.

  • Negative terms like fear, darkness, cold, etc. describe the absence of something that exists. Heat is energy, and it exists. Cold is simply the lack of heat. Darkness is the lack of light. Fear describes the absence of love. The only emotion we *ever* feel is love - just in different states of it.

Happiness, joy, peacefulness, affection = variations of love

Hate, anger, sadness, impatience, greed = variations of fear

There are shades of grey, yes. Not everything is pure black-and-white.

  • @FrozenAnarchy You sir have a kiddy porn dungeon

  • @mptothedc :O How did you know?

  • @FrozenAnarchy Frank.

  • @mptothedc Frank was my subject back in the day. : / Tell Frank hi and that I miss the vibrating Howitzer I used to insert in his vagina before I transsexualized the chap, aight? If he doesn't remember, call him 'Frannie', that tends to open up some memories. :D

  • my favorite part is right after this when the teacher said "He told me to forcibly insert the lifeline card up my anus!" hahaha best line ever

  • Sherida makes an X on fear category. Darko stands up to blackboard, X disapeadredded.

  • You cut out the best part!!

  • there are only two real emotions....all others are products of one or the other--thus--when we know this- we are able to have choice..thats also the bad news- cuz then we are now responsible for how we act and feel...there are no real victims

  • This is awesome. My most favorite part of the movie.

"If you dont coplete the assignment you get a zero for the day" *DEEP BREATH* and cut :)

  • The point of the exercise is to determine what emotion is causing the dilemma, because in your heart you can't feel fear or love simultaneously. The problem with the situation is that fear and love are both integral driving forces behind each decision. They are opposite, but they are crucial to each other. Without fear, we would not know love, and vice versa.

  • @4Tiny2 well if i were to take your theory and out it into religion, youre saying if theres a god, there has to be a devil? if there is a good there has to be a bad?

  • @MrKodokan I am a mortal man and my comprehension of the unknown is limited. The best I can do it is take what the men before me have learned and apply it to the world around me.

  • @4Tiny2 I beg to differ, I have felt fear and love simultaniously many times in my life, mostly through relationships. The character Donnie is right, you cannot just lump the whole spectrum of human emotions into two categories, it's an asinine concept.

  • @4Tiny2 Like rainzoro said, you're not listening to Darko. This is a one-dimensional video like the concept it espouses. See Wikipedia's "List of Emotions" - emotions can be opposites, but it's not as simplistic as the video states.

This video is typical self-help bull like we see peddled even today. Don't buy into concepts which even a smart but disturbed high-schooler could recognize as unrealistic.

  • @elronxenu Dude.. you had a good argument going until you dropped Wikipedia as a source haha...

  • @boardr8299 Why, you think Wikipedia just made up that list, and emotions really are a 1-dimensional spectrum going from Fear to Love just like Jim Cunningham's video shows?

I thought not. Wikipedia's not error-free, but it links to primary sources. And of course it's useful for a quick reference to the bleeding obvious.

  • @elronxenu Wikipedia leaves people as closed minded as Cunningham's video as it only explores the "official" accounts and does not allow for alternative views. I think Jim is missing the point with his video. It isn't that emotions stem from fear or love, but our actions are fear based or love based. I am not trying to create conflict here, just expressing my opinion. I appreciate your original comment because it allowed me to think differently, I was just offering constructive criticism :)

  • @boardr8299 No problemo.

  • This is amazing.

I've been thinking about fear and love lately. It really seems like love is the highest and fear the lowest vibration on Earth.

  • This is why I go to charter, not public schools, because if I went to public schools, I would be in the same situation as Donnie Darko. What's really funny is that I had a teacher at my school who is just like that, her name was Mrs. Malanga, we called her Mrs, Malagna; why? I don't know.

  • This is one of my favorite parts of this movie.

  • ling ling's fear is that she wont find any other money

  • She can Forcefully insert the Lifeline excercise into her anus.

  • I love this film and this scene, but I can't shake the feeling that hollywood is trying to ridicule Bill Hicks' Fear v. Love philosophy with the whole Patrick Swayze character (who turns out to be a paedophile?!). And judging by the comments on here people are lapping it up. Obviously there are other emotional states but fear and love are the two predominant ones. Fear is used by the system to control us, and only love can set us free, this has been and always will be true.

  • @toppermost1 Nice, that's so true.

  • @toppermost1 so ur point is love, fear are the two predominant emotions in life because they represent freedom and control. What are you going to say when Donnie Darko responds by saying life isn't all about freedom and control. All you did here is nothing but change the word love, fear into another word that represents your subjective definition, which we have no clue where and how you obtained from.

  • @toppermost1 so when Darko says there are other emotion states to consider, you're not listening. His basic argument is that you cannot COMPARE OR WEIGH each emotion's importance. Your definition may work for your little life, but assuming that it would apply to everyone else in the world would be the dumbest generalization of the year of 2010.

  • i love how donnie smiles at cherita.

  • this is maybe my favorite scene from the movie

  • Man, the actress who plays the teacher is a bitch in EVERYONE of the roles ive seen her in!

  • The correct opposite would be "Love" and "Indifference." Love is to care so much about someone that you would do anything for them. Indifference is to not care at all. Even hate shows that someone cares and can be more closely related to love.

  • Hate comes from fear

  • @TzimasJ

where does hate derive from? you hate someone truly because you are angry. you are angry because you are afraid. you are afraid that someone will take you out of your comfortable space, they'll put you in danger, they'll be better than you, or they'll overcome you.. "Fear leads to anger, anger leads to hate, hate leads to suffering."

  • RIP Swayzee

  • Maaaaaan, you didn't keep the punchline!

  • @AbsalomPitchingfork "He told me to Forcablely shove a book up my anus!!"

XD That is the second best line in the movie. The first? "YOUR SUCH A FUCK ASS" lol Dont you agree?

  • Yuck, I don't lust after my mother!

  • Hah. I never noticed that Seth Rogen is one of the class bullies. That's hott.

  • bill hicks ftw

  • sup with bill hicks

  • 2:12 - where's the x?

  • I'm a person of extremes, and see the world in black and white terms; in terms of religion, philosophy, etc. I've never bought the Fear V. Love argument. This movie puts it in the best and most simply way why I never did. LOVE this scene.

  • "I'll tell you what he said! He asked me to forcibly insert the lifeline exercise card into my anus!"

    (x Love this film (:

  • I urge everyone here to follow the path that is love!

  • Shut Up

  • well if you wanna simplify things to the extreme i think everything comes down to sex. fear is the instinct to survive, but the only reason we want to survive as long as possible is so that we have a better chance to reproduce. its just basic human instinct. there are loads of sub-brackets and variations of emotion, but in my opinion wen you get down to it everything eventually comes down to survival of the human race. its the same with all animals, just more simplified than in people.

  • That's stupid, how can you say that? You say things all come down to sex, and now you say it's for the survival of humans. Yes, fear is the instinct to survive or to get through, but not because we want to keep the human race alive. In some extreme situations, yes, but to the individual, we fear things because we either don't want to fail, get hurt, or lose anything.

  • If fear didn't serve the survival of humans, we wouldn't experience fear, see?

  • Not everyone is afraid of things, or dying. Infact, there are actually a LOT of apathetic people in the world that could care less about survival (or maybe even the existence of human kind). But like I said, fear is the instinct to survive, though it is different for the individual.

  • If a person is not afraid of dying, chances are that this individual will die sooner than his/her companions and possibly before he or she could reproduce.

It is only lately that some abnormal people can survive.

  • Butt grab by Jim at the beginning

  • Hahaha, I never noticed that.

  • God I hate self-righteious bastards who think they know everything about life just because they can parrot some trite-ass useless product of a cow's rectum.... grrr.

  • Comment removed

  • This ish meh favorite part.

    :3

    Donnie's a beasssst.

    <3

  • i love this film!!!

  • That was funny

  • did u notice after the girl places an x on the board and then when donnie darko stepd up afterwards the x is gone? lol sorry i just love noticing movie mistakes :)

  • "no duh is a product of fear"

lol..is a product of love. hehe

  • is WTF a product of fear or love?

  • fear

  • I really don't believe he is a rebellious teenager. He is only intelligent enough to discuss about the simple way Kitty want them to see life.

  • Exactly. He's simply smart enough to tell when they're telling them BS, and not just follow all their orders. This happens to be my favorite scenes in the movie just for the portrayal of that very reason.

  • well yeah in a way but he's rebellious because a third of the classes i take are bullshit and i'm intelliegent enough to know that but i'm not rebellious enough to stand up against the teachers. The main thing is he speaks his mind wether he's rebellious or not.

  • does anyone actually agree with mrs.farmer (is that her name?)

  • I wouldn't go so far as to say I'd agree with Mrs. Farmer however the topic of Fear and Love are valid concepts. While I love this movie, the typical Hollywood mindset tries to prove it's leftist intellectualism by creating straw-man opponents. If you want to get a good understanding of these concepts then I would suggest you read A Course in Miracles.

  • "A Course in Miracles (also referred to as ACIM or the Course) written by Dr. Helen Schucman and Dr. William Thetford that describes a new approach to spirituality based on Christian teachings. Schucman dictated the book based on an inner voice,[1][2][3][4] which she described as coming from a divine source, specifically Jesus Christ."

Of course fear and love are worthwhile concepts (and "valid," in a colloquial sense), but reducing life to two absolute extremes is antiquated and simplistic.

  • Obviously you are right. Which is my point, no one said fear and love are the only emotional levels a person can go through HOWEVER in this movie the simplify some of the concepts used in A Course of Miracles and then try to tackle them in light of their oversimplifications. It's a dirty tactic and used very often by so-called modern intellectuals.

  • How do you propose you discuss the topics of Spirituality within 2 hours and make it entertaining. In fact, make it so good that it is on most real movie buffs top ten favorites.

  • You don't get what the movie is saying. It doesn't matter which two emotions you take, you can't explain life with simply those two. You can paint a picture with only black and white, but that's not life-like, it's highly abstract and semi-non-representation.

The movie could have chosen truth and anger and you'd probably be saying the same thing, and so would I.

  • how can you discuss this when everyone here probably has completely different definitions of love?

  • I'm not afraid anymore!

  • One of the things I love most about "Donnie Darko" is its accurate portrayal of teenagers and high school life. There are a lot of rebellious teenagers who do stuff like this during class.

  • I don't think you understand the concept of rebellion. It's going against the majority, not necassarily being 'wrong', because the majority is not always right. Donnie was being rebellious for the right reasons. I doubt you'd find "a lot" of teenagers like him.

  • way to take things too seriously

  • just watching him tell of the teacher intelligently was great

  • omfg- this scene was like awesome. i totally agree wit donnie(jake gyllenhaal)

  • 0:04

    "butt grope"

Jim C. got the voice to make your booty go smack.

  • "I'll tell you what he said! He told me to forcibly insert the lifeline exercises into my anus!"

  • Best use of cutting away from a scene EVER.

  • I want nothing to do with your arguments..

I love this movie, it's a great scene.

  • Yikes. I'm pretty sure youtube commenting is used as a legitimate way to piss people off, more than for comments on the video.

  • SHUT UP Jennyrgar, stop trying to act clever, you dont know what your talking about. You're just trying to be controvercial.

  • this is you guys: Theres no God cuz he lets us suffer! All i have is my pills and alcohol! no one understands me! im gonna go cut myself to feel special! everything the tv says is true!

  • "im gunna go cut myself" i hope u feel better lol

  • fuck you jennyrgar!!!

you really think life is simple don't you?

    and btw god isn't real

  • fuck you jennyrgar!!!

you really think life is simple don't you?

    and btw god isn't real

  • what do you mean by 'you guys'?

clearly you think you're better then everyone, so piss of and stop posing lame comments trying to sound smart

    (and failing miserably btw)

  • and kiss my ass butt fucks. what do you believe is the answer to life youngin?

  • your responding like most people who are confusted with anger. go kill the witches! yes, i suggest you go and do some research. read some books at a place called the library. read the latest science. its very hard for the simple mind to understand that is why you guys are what? cashiers? sittin on computers all day?

  • Jennyrgar you are seriously a dumbass, fear and love arent the only significant emotions. Happiness? Hatred? Depression? Are you misses farmer? Do you really believe the shit spewing from your mouth? Wasting any more words on you would be a waste of my time.

  • chickifuckface, dont be so stupid. all im saying is that these emotions are caused by a fear of something when it comes down to it. take a look at what psychologists say. dont be simple.its not black and white. for example... depression is internalized anger, frustration is feeling sorrry for ones self. they can further be broken down to love an fear. stop acting like we are arguing chickflick like you have a brain or something

  • i agree.. i think anything that we put energy into is a product of fear. it is what makes us WORK. fear of failure creates success. love of success does not create success, because that is conditional love, which is fake love. these are just my thoughts; dispose of them at will. the only way to true unconditional love is apathy.

  • @Tidnull You think tesla or einstein had a big fear of failure? Umm no. They had a vision and they knew it was for the betterment of all mankind so they went for it.

Fear of failure is part of what controls you in this fucked up society though.

  • jennyrgar is an idiot. There is hate. There is guilt. There is much more.

  • then which one is it fear or love for donnie's card genius

  • actually things are that easy --all emotions spout from fear and love. its because you let yourselves get swallowed in emotions is anything hard at all. you make things complicated for yourself. ask the geniuses of time... common people dont get it. understand, you would love it. you will feel so silly when you finally do. as a matter a fact, im glad most people dont get it. its a secret that brings success. read the books of millionaires you'll see.

  • you claim to be smart but you think the answer to life is in selfhelp books. you've read a few books and are so small minded that you've spout whatever their message is, unable to think for yourself and lecturing us on our small ways.

hate doesn't come from fear. and even emotions like envy, pressure, they may have a connection to fear. sympathy and joy may have a connection to love. but over simplfying humanity is the trademark of madmen like mao and hitler.

  • woah, chill out jim.

  • It's the best movie ever!!! Especially the connection between that scene and when Donnie Darko finds J.Cunningham's wallet. Lots and lots of connections in there. Should watched again and again...!

  • this movie is so fucking good i love it love it love it

  • Haha that's one of my favorite scenes in the movie... well in a humorous sense lol. "No duh" is a product of boredom! I love the next scene too rofl... "I'll tell you what he said! He told me to forcibly insert the lifeline exorcise card into my anus!" I love that movie so much. Someone needs to post the scene where Gretchen dies and Frank gets shot... :O I gave it away!

  • I love that scene 2! Go Donnie! lol o btw, some ppl did put the ending scene on here. U just need to look harder! ^_^

  • Who else here has actually had to listen to "motovational speakers" before? Argh, they are full of sooooooooo much bullshit its not even funny.

  • lol, i like that bit. especially when Donnie's dad is walking out of the office and he cant keep himself from laughing his ass off. what a cool dad.

  • homg, and the next scene is awesome too!

Why doon't you shove this fuckin card up your ass?!?

  • fuck jim cunningham esq people. false prophets, wolves in sheeps clothing. Scary, i used to know a woman just as whorish and mislead as kitty farmer. bleh. Great scene though. "Things just arent that simple."

  • Amen to that. Things really arent that easy...

  • You cut it off too early.

  • hahaha, i love it.

  • i love this film!!!
