  • Stuart McRobert's books (Beyond Brawn and Insider's Tell-All Handbook) are famous for his ultra-strict emphasis on safety and correct form. Yet, I actually learned almost as much new information from Matt Wenning in a few minutes than I have done in a couple of years of weightlifting research, including McRobert's books. His tips on eye-level, centered knurling, upper-back lock, outer heel and knee push-out, spotting fails, proprioception (no mirrors!), accessory work - superb! Thank you, Matt!

  • fuck yes

  • I realise he's just coaching the man, but shouldnt he still be coaching him to the hip crease being below the knees?

  • you're gotta be kidding me. For the longest time I thought squat is an up n down exercise. Nooooo

  • man i would hate to be the guy they're correcting.

everyone around him is squatting 900+lbs and this guy is breaking form at 400...we were all there once though.

  • question: should the low back stay in the arched position throughout the entire exercise or does it straighten out at the top of the movement? i cant tell if his back is straightening out at the top cuz of his shirt.

  • @groovytunes420 It should not be straightend out.

  • This series should be shown as a mandatory feature of entering any gym.

  • No disrespect but I saw a lot of what he did before coaching as better form, especially the pelvic tilt, the neutral head and neck, and the flat back. Athletes shouldn't squat this way, this is for powerlifers. You can let your knees come forward and still keep weight in the heels and get great glute and hamstring activation. Torso and shin angles should be parallel throughout the movement.

  • @TheChase64 this video is how you squat heavy weights. with your knees coming forward you would have a weak spot in your quads because they arent as powerful as your glutes and hamstrings. i dont know what you mean at all by having your shins and torso parallel because that impossible to tell.

  • @TheChase64 Why would you want athletes to squat with bad form? This form is perfect for everyone from a beginner to the most experienced lifter. And knees coming forward indicates that your glutes and hamstrings have disengaged. Why would you want that on a squat?

  • Wenning leaves no stone unturned in this series. This is a must-see for anyone who squats regardless of your sport.

  • PLEASE do a Dead lift Series like this...

  • How do you take that weight on your traps without it hurting? I have to use a roll of plumbing foam with anything over 60 kilos!

  • @wungabunga work on ur traps, and dont use the foam. Eventually you wont even feel it.

  • @wungabunga doing shrugs and rows has helped me on that

  • These guys rule

  • Damn, these guys are MEN. No, pretty-boy, glossy-eyed, Abercrombie models in this gym. All of them have full lumberjack beards.

  • Err... and his wrists? He'll be suffering with 400lbs on 'em

  • It's....it's beautiful....

  • Fantastic video, I wish i found this sooner, basically everything I do wrong with my squat is corrected in these videos, thanks very much!

  • "You cannot fix weak spots on the squat...by squatting."

    Except that's wrong.

  • @ArentWeSpecial This guy's already squatting 400 before he even started. This isn't an issue of just needing to squat more to fix his recruitment pattern. He's addressing links in the chain that're significantly weaker that the rest. So no, you can't fix them just by squatting, they'll never be stressed enough to catch up and it'll just keep getting more imbalanced.

  • awsome

  • Huge help. I bet Wenning could squat a locomotive.

  • What the hell? Only halfway down? That messed up the whole video. Deep squats are better and safer

  • @Climhazz4rd it's a box squat. It is used to teach form safely.

  • @Climhazz4rd not true. you can't deep squat without rounding youre lower back thus keepin your knee out. if you can then your e not human

  • geez this guy is squatting 405 and they call him a "novice" and are ripping apart his form... makes me realize how far I have to go.

Also, I appreciate all the proper spotting and willingness to yell across the gym for more spotters

  • Who's shooting this, a midget?

  • bearmode neckbeards, bearmode neckbeards everywhere...

  • Great videos, I like his sandals!

  • You guys rock for taking your time to show this, thanks from Norway!

  • Technique goes better when he starts adding weight (not close to max of course)… sale thing happens to me, can't get a propoer parallel squat with empty bar.

    Good series, thanks for sharing!

  • @hillsidehibbee THIS PLEASE.

  • what a great teacher!! no wonder hes one of the best

  • Please post the rest, these videos are a huge help.

  • Good tips, thanks

  • OMG THANKS

  • Does this utilize the hip drive? I do not see the hip coming up first. Please correct me of I am wrong.

  • @mliu8n I could be wrong, but it's my understanding that you don't want your hips to go up, but forward. If you try to lift your hips without your shoulders, especially in a suit, your back gets all the load.

  • Some of the best squat videos I've ever seen.

  • Amazing. Can't wait for part 4

  • Amazing and super useful.

  • Nice video Matt. Thank you and keep them coming!!!!

  • Come oooon, part 4!!

  • Love the series. Wish I could setup a TV next to our squat rack here at my university and just run this on loop. Please keep it coming. Is there a deadlift instructional in the future?

  • Great series so far. Watching the So You Think You Can Bench series added 25 lbs to my max, just from tweaking my form. PLEASE do a So You Think You Can Deadlift series when the Squat series is complete. Keep up the great work!
