If anything, their laughter was reflexive, because he actually primed them for the joke, prior to delivering it. Unsurprisingly, they laughed hysterically. I'd also argue that an "owwwww" reaction (though not always vocal) is just as involuntary as laughter -- which, many times, is contrived.

Besides, a lot of these references take a few seconds to internalize because your brain has to slow down and paint the pictures. Lastly, some of these reactions to the lines are "oh wow" & sheer marvel at the realization of the profound nature of the lyrics instead of screaming and yelling in excitement.
