Well I think both movies had their good and bad points. But neither of them can possibly match the books they are just too epic. I dont even think its possible to make a movie that good.
David Lynch did better in the frickin 80's movie. In casting at the very least. His fremen looked like they lived in a desert. The worms were much better as well, this versions look like crap.
But Lynch hates his movie and he disowned it after it bombed at the box-office and with critics, he refuses to talk about it for it was a painful memory and he was a gun for hire as it was the worst film of his career. There is another Dune adaptation coming soon to theaters, what do you think of that?
@Johnlindsey289 Lynch bounces back and forth between love and hate for his Dune movie. And the director hating the movie doesn't mean much. Uwe Boll loves his movies and they suck. As for the Dune remake movie, well if they ever get it off the ground we'll see, but as they are now looking for a third director and have been denied a further extension if they don't start shooting by May they lose the rights to make it.
personally i don't like any movie version of dune. when i read the book a i created a mental image of the characters and when i saw how they looked in the movie i was horrified at how shitty they looked. i was like "wtf is this star wars?"
I've seen both this and David Lynch's one. I think Lynch's movie has a spirit, a core. This version looked to me kinda perfunctory... Sorry if i offend fans...
I guess you have never really read the book, but just only seen 84 move. Well, David Linch in that 1984 movie got it all wrong. I guess he also had never read the book. with Dune 2000 and Children of Dune it is different story. Both of these latest movies are more ore less correct. John Harrison did it all right. Only Uniforms couldbe more like in 84 movie.
actualy dude your totaly wrong he didn't get it all wrong infact he had frank herbert on set approoving everything they did ... there was only so much he could have done to do it more right ... but yea he got it down and if u say that the david lynch one got it wrong ur saying the author frank Herbert got it wrong
Ok - David Lynch & Frank Herbert in that old version got it wrong - why, because Star Wars and Matrix have almost the same amount of allusions to Dune (book). And, that movie do not mach with other Dune books. Planet and names are the same, but that Davis Linch's movie creates original plot in all other ways. (sometimes writer is ready for compromises to get movie done) In contrast this latest movie is Good.
Don't forget Avatar is the same thing as Dune when James Cameron wrote his script/treatment in 1993 and had the idea since 1985 as he stated he was influenced by John Carter of Mars, Dune by Frank Herbert, Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind (a.k.a. Warriors of the Wind), Broken Arrow (1950 James Stewart Western) and Issac Ashmiov's books. There are similarities to Dune in Avatar such as Na'Vi like Freman, Jake like Paul, Netyiri like Chani, white man being alien tribe member etc.
This version has terrible acting, poor costumes, and ridiculous fx. It has an early Star Trek mixed with Episodes I-III Star Wars. How sad it is that nothing can beat the '84 version to date.
agreed ... plus the other version they actualy had Frank Herbert on set approoving everything the only thing they had to compromise on was the ornothopters because they diudn't have the technology to make them flap
This story is hard to capture in movie, too much information and philosophy for movie. I don't think that Lynch succeeded, he just did best what he could. And I agree with:'' well, more closer to the book is only one plus of miniseries. All other is much more worse than in Lynch version.''
But what´s so difficult in buliding a model with moving wings? There are even model ornithopter´s to by (without connection with Dune), who can even fly.
Herbert was lying when he said he put on a happy face for approval on publicity when you can see the truth and suffering in his eyes, he died a year after Lynch's Dune was released in theaters probably to escape the horror. I mean his film was physically ugly and disgusting only to feed the need of a macabre, goofy and selfish director's perverted imagination and don't get me started on that retarded ending where it rained on Arakkis which meant the death of worms.
hey i know there was a tv show on dune but dont know if there realy was but gess this proves it and this song is sweet with the vid any way to get it for mp3??
It wasn't a TV show. It was a made for TV movie that was about six hours long and subsequently released to DVD. They also made a sequel that's just as excellent.
i readed somewhere that the 2000 miniseries sux ass.judging from these images,it's true.

At least Lynch's version had some memorable scenes such as:
"Father! ...father, the sleeper has awakened!"
...and the intro with Virginia Madsen that fades into the awesome prophecy theme. Classic. =)
