Some of the unlicensed games are actually pretty good if not better than the originals I like to think. There's always something that suffers. The NES Sonic and Contra III are playable on mute...the music and sound are horrible.

So the boss had no AI? It just mindlessly throws the exact over and under "tiger" fire ball over and over again no matter of the player's positioning? What a load of crap! I am not sure how the other versions are for the end boss, but this was just bad. The SMS version was much better, actually closer to the arcade game play than even the Genesis, but the graphics were not as good and no "Rise from your grave." like the Genesis.

Maybe people miss this game because most roms sites display it's under the japanese name. You will never find "altered beast (J)" but under "juuouki (j)".

Asmik released several Sega games on the nes only for Japan. ;) Good luck finding a cart!

While getting to the boss in the NES version was much harder, there being 8 stages and obsolete controls and graphics, the actual final boss in the Genesis version was a pain in the ass to kill.

And who cares about the ending the Genesis had an intro, so you know after Canis makes out with Athena, you get her back to Zeus, I'm sure of course, after having hot sex, or a three way if you beat the game on 2 player mode.

WTF dude! I have at least 60,000 old-school games roms including 15,000 nes,snes roms..I got every version of Altered beast including several true arcade RIPS/DUMPS and the soundtacks. How could I have missed this? One of my favorites titles. Let me check my archives and I will re-post my findings. By the way I have rare 1986 Transformers NES ROM. It's extremely difficult .
