Due to the current US budget situation and short memory of the sacrifice of past wars, the planned new Ordnance Museum at Fort Lee, VA is a no go. Even the storage of these awesome tanks has been questioned by congressional committee. I hope the Danville Tank Museum gets this Elefant if congress orders the US Army to get riid of it and the other tanks..
@Finkie147 The JSU152 is a Tank Destroyer which is in the same category as the Ferdinand/Elefant, and it was never considered as a Main Battle Tank like the JS2.
@ThePanzerWarMachine In terms of using MBT is the same when used in the term of Workhorse, in which the Panzer IV as well as the Big German Cats were the Workhorses of the Panzer Forces, in other words, the tanks I just mentioned are also called Main Battle Tanks.
As for the SturmTiger, its primary role was more of a Close Support Infantry Tank for Close Quarter Combat in a city, than a tank that went up against other tanks in an open field like the Battle of Kursk.
This tank destroyer was essentially designed by Porsche, long before it became famous for other reasons. 7 decades later, they finally designed a successor to the Elefant: The Panamera.
@routermen i would go with the source that the germans had 780 k troops and 2500 tanks and soviets almost 2 million and close to 5000 tanks. thats wat number i have seen the most
Greeting to you sir i have photos of the 4 remaining ferdinands ( 3 ferdinands and 1 hull i was in kubinka i watched the russian and the russian hawe 1 elephant as spare parts the main gun emplacement is damaged and 1 of the tracks is missing
and than i watched with my parent 4-5 years ago the aberden elefant and my friend sended a photo from italy the have salvaged a elephant upper hull
@Davieeee87 False and incorrect information. 2 Ferdinant / Elaphant vehicles are still with us today.
This one, who was knocked out in Itally was one of only 40 Elephnats that survied the Battle of Kursk, and the other one was captured by Russian infantry during the Kursk Offemsive. These two vehicles are the only 2 remaining on Earth. None of the 2 are on Working Condition.
What a waste. Only 2 left in the world, so we'll just slap some paint on it and call it "restored"! (then film it for TV to make it look like we did something.)
What are you expecting them to do? As the vid says, there were no spare parts and it was missing a lot of original components. Restoring it to working condition is out of the question.
1:57 not true .... they should check it before misleading us ... jagdtiger , sturmtiger , ISU152 etc. such as shame that documentary film makers make such as mistakes
@ThePanzerWarMachine well ... if isu152 has cannon 152mm , jagdtiger 128mm and sturmtiger 380mm rocket launcher ...than 88mm doesn't look like one of the largest :-D
@ThePanzerWarMachine yes you're right , 88mm is best anti tank cannon ...i'm not comparing that.
anyway ...lately i'm finding so many other and worse mistakes in doc films,that i watch just pictures ....for correct infos ...books and military forums
@ThePanzerWarMachine it really depends on how you look at it. The 88mm gun on the Elephant was the PAK43 L/71 version, which had a very long barrel, combind with its loading mechanism it truly is one of the largest weapons to be fitted on a tank platform...
@Masterdustin101 Not all Jadtiger were issued with the 128 High velocity gun. Of the 85 Units build between June 1944 and april 1945, 81 were issued with the'' Panzerjäger Tiger mit 88mm Pak 43/3 (Sf) Sd.Kfz.185 '' main canon, and the last 4 were build with the '' 88 mm Lang 71 kanon og the King Tiger. ''
Lol, the description is wrong. Both the JagdTiger and Tiger 1b were larger then the Elephant

the elefant was based on the tiger p the porsche competing model for the tiger
and the jagttiger was way bigger and heavier than the elefant

The Heaviest Gun on a WW2 Tank was the Josef Stalin 2, which boasted a 122mm Main Gun.
EvilFingers 3 months ago
@EvilFingers Wrong! Soviet JSU152 = 152mm gun.

@EvilFingers
keep in mind that the term '' Main Battle tank'' was used until late in the Cold War.
And come to think of it, the largest caliber Gun put on a Tank like vehicle in German Use was the SturmTiger.

1:38 the first mistake. He refers to him as 'she'. Tanks are of male gender.
I would really love to make a pilgrimage to see him (The Elefant).

And the elefant wasn't the heaviest tracked vehicle developed by the germans. That would be the karl gerat's. They were 124 tonnes.

the elephant was a failure because it could not defend itself against infantry with at weapons and its side armor are vulnerable to antitank shells.
