this method is a little hard for first timers. I think the one you mention first about the pulling arm and putting the leg behind shoulder is the best method to start with since its a lot more simpler. this one might be more effective though
amazing video but i gots a question... at 1:53 you put your kneee on or above his shoulder... could you do that earlier to kinda get the idea of a left out of there while trying to get the hook above the elbow arm thing in?
(1) why do you push his anterior left shoulder down with your left hand, rather than pushing his face to his left ?
(2) is there anything you can do with your right foot (after you turn 90 degrees) (or your left hand) to prevent him from clasping his hands together to protect himself from the armbar ?
1. You push his shoulder down to maintain control and to keep him from raising up when you go for the arm bar. Holding his face is not as controlling as it may seem.
2. Not much you can do to prevent this if he's done even a little ground work. He's going to clasp them as soon as he feels you go for it.

Not really. Having the leg up reduces your base, and makes you more vulnerable to a sweep. I would say it is best to wait until the last second.

You've been taught well, very clean and well executed.
